Is it me?

During the last week or so, I have listened to about half a dozen local radio shows. I have found the presenters to be so similar that without the station ID jingles being different I would have thought I was still on the first one.

All the DJs sound as though they have been turned into some sort of faceless clone, they all inflect phrases and words the same and generally have no distinguishing features!

The stations all seem to play the same songs and this even includes any odd oldies they randomly seem to chuck on. It was pure pants. I will not be tuning in again for a long time.

Ken Bruce on good old Radio 2 followed by Jeremy Vine & Steve Wright was a real breath of fresh air.

Your views folks??

Local radio stations are fast becoming faceless corporations that are just doing it for the money.

Bland presenters, and advert after advert blight the airwaves.

I totally agree Radio 2 is far far superior in both its content and standard of presenter, but has it got any competition really?

Radio 1? Not likely.

BBC local radio? ZZzzzzz..... ZZZZZzzzzzzzzz.........

Internet radio is its only challenger.

I miss the days of Dave Lee Travis personally.

Local radio used to be a good alternative to national stations.

My local radio station has an advert/jingle machine that stutters and plays the same ad back to back and skips tracks. So you get mixed ads (it can be quite funny). Ok things do go wrong but this has been going on for months.

In my 1 hr journey to my gig on Saturday, I heard Automatic monster twice. Then on the way home at midnight they played an almost identical playlist.

I play more cd's than ever before now when travelling.

the problem with local radio is they are nearly all owned by one of the main groups..gcap, real, utv, emap, tlrc and research shows people want to listen to there favourite songs. as a person on average only listens for 20 minutes at a time thats why songs get repeated so often.

as a presenter on local radio i totally agree with whats been said previously, there are too many ads(not mr harris there is only 1) cos they make the money, presenters are told to keep links short to get back to the music quickly, so the personality and entertainment is eroded.

dont get me started. lol

Three letters....

GWR

Most 'local' radio stations are run on a network basis, 'local' during the day, ie. Andy Harris on Devon Local Radio's breakfast show, through to 1900hrs, then it sounds local but is networked, Graham Torrington, who we can all listen to in the evenings is based 'Up North', s few idents in the show appear to make it local but it is all the same across the network.

Aimed at 18- 35 year old housewives I'm afraid.

Even Steve Wright is sounding tired, and all his 'Factoids' etc are pre recorded.

.....but what do I know ?

local radio is too repetative, think r2 is far better during the day but evenings is :poo: .

but if you think local radio is bad during the day you want to do a nightshift with it on.i think they only have about 20 songs at night :hide:

As stated, the '20 minute listen' is why so many tracks are repeated...lack of variety.

Local radio is crap.

But remember, adverts ARE needed to make money, otherwise these stations would not happen.

There is too much audience research these days...for God sake, play something different! This is why all songs on contempoary radio are the same...the are based on popularity and people 'like them'.

No variety and for once it would be nice to hear something different.

This does however, rather contradict this post here made by me a little while ago, where most people seem to enjoy radio!

Just realised my first post on that topic makes no sense!

Is it bad that I am only 20 and listen to Radio 2 over Radio 1 and the local rubbish? lol

Probably not.

Mind you, I'm thinking about getting a DAB radio for the van so I can listen to BBC 6 Music

I love Radio 4 for some of their news and entertainment programmes, and Radio 1's specialist shows like Tong, Zane Lowe, Rob Da Bank, Gilles Peterson, Anni Mac, Annie Nightingale, Fabio & Grooverider etc, etc... are absolutely excellent. Radio 1's daytime output is however dire, as is most local radio stations I have come across. The BBC local stations are OK for news and travel, but their presenters who do talk shows are so bloody opinionated, it gets my goat!

However, last week, I shared a car ride with RobbieD who spends part of his life in the big smoke, and he opened my ears to something - the pirate stations! The quality of delivery was comical on some, but the music and the technical mixing skills of the 'presenters' was a pleasure to listen to.

Virgin are terrible for that, once something is on their playlist, you seem to get it hourly.

They have a thing in the mid morning show called I haven't heard it for ages, where you request a song that you haven't heard in ages & you win a DAB radio if it's played. One guy requested something & as it started I thought "You didn't listen to the bloody breakfast show then, did you!"

There is one spot in Birmingham where this happens over bother Radio 1 and Radio 2 frequencies, it is highly annoying.

And as mentioned above somewhere Radio 1 specialist shows are fantastic agreed!

When a radio dj get's it wrong - it's a fluff, but if a mobile and club dj get it wrong - is it all Jimmy Saville?

Does this mean when a pirate dj gets it all wrong - it's all gone pieces of eight?!

Sounds a bit Pete Tong to me
