Just looking for second opinions before I order a new driver.

My JBL powered sub starts pharting before I can get any decent oomph out of it. It's OK at low volume.

I can't think of anything other than the driver that could cause this, but just thought I'd ask my good friends at DJU for their opinions before I order a new driver.

this was the problem mine had.

The active sub has shaken itself to pieces creating dry joints etc. Very exspensive service it is back and running sweet.

Every time it tried to boom, it broke its contacts...... nice.

it must be happening a lot lately, the pharting that is.

bluejools started this thread HERE about the same thing.

im running a JBL Active Sub just like you High Fidelity and was just wondering what volume setting you have yours set on. i have mine set at 2-3 and any more mine starts pharting. with a volume control on JBLs that go up to 10 have you any idea what setting it should be able to take.

cheers

I would have expected with a 0db input, you should be able to wind the volume control on the sub up to almost max.

Or am I just expecting too much from manufacturers that they would make the internal amp match the speaker with a 0db input.

Just been having an idle chat with my local DJ supplier, who does repairs as well.

He's had it once where the smoothing capacitors on the PSU were on their way out, causing AC to end up on the DC rail when a heavy current was in demand.

Sounds logical to me as an ex TV engineer where AC getting on to the DC rail would cause a ripple on the picture.

Am going to test in the next week by lashing the speaker up to a seperate amp.

If it still pharts it's the driver.

If it doesn't, it's the PSU.

So don't go ordering a new driver just yet Jim, I'll let you know the results when I've tested.

Before we started importing system we had some JBL 4722 (I think that was the model) and one driver Pharted.

Cheapest solution was to buy a recone kit from link

I have no experience of reconing and my tech people thought it was great fun watching me do the recone.

However it worked very well and saved loads of money.

Have a look..

Most likely to be the driver although before buying a new one i would just check that all the fittings are sealing correctly. I had a similar farting problem once and it was air escaping around the speakon socket which had come loose!

Hopefully it may be something cheaper than the driver! (unless i'm too late in which case i hope it was the driver after all!)

  • 2 months later...

Well finally managed to get round to looking at the sub at the weekend.

I hadn't actually listened to it up close at the time, just took my lads word for it that it was pharting.

Well it wasn't.

What it was actually doing was rattling. OK at low volume, but as I wound it up this indistinct rattle appeared.

Put it on an armchair to stop the ornaments falling of the picture rail and wound it up to trace the rattle. Gripping the cabinet anywhere seemed to reduce it, so got the old screwdriver out to check the cabinet screws.

They all took at least one turn on the screw and about 3 or 4 were completely loose.

99.9% certain that it's ok now, but won't be sure till I get it in the venue on Friday night. Problem was that everything else in the room was rattling by the time I got to the point where it was hurting my ears :scared: and my son wasn't too happy that his CD collection in his bedroom upstairs had fell off the shelf. :aa

Oh yes - the neighbours were out.
