Do You Factor In A Margin For Hagglers, Etc...?

If we knock 10% off will the I.R and PLI providers, equipment suppliers etc etc, list goes on!, knock 10% off??? NO CHANCE!

 

This said i used to have 2 rates, business and mates.

Now i stick to the first one unless the mate is female and looking for a 'friend' to DJ at her 21st!

Sometimes in the pursuit of perfection one can get blinded by size.

 

If you believe you can acheive.

I don't factor anything in for haggling as I consider my prices to be fair in the first place. I do not offer discounts for prime nights (ie Friday & Saturday) but am "flexible" for remaining nights.

 

I support a couple of charitable causes and offer them a discount but never work for nothing, anyone can do that.

Recently got asked to do a birthday party in Paisley Town Hall

Igave a price of £120 for a 7.30pm start and midnight finish.

The next time that I met the person she said that the times

had changed to 7.30 pm start and 2 am finish and could I

do this for £ 110. When I stated that my new price would be

at least £ 170. She said that she had got someone else at

£110 for the new hours but she would still prefer me at £11o

I politely declined her offer. Anyway 2 days later a phone call

offering me £ 120. I said sorry but I had another booking

which was an untruth... I don't want to haggle with customers

when I give my price people say fine that is reasonable.

Idon't haggle when I buy equipment for my disco.

I just accept that is the going rate.

Sometimes i'll get asked to provide sound or lighting for an event and money will be mentioned as being tight right up front.

 

In those situations i'll ask them what their budget is and prepare a FULL quote around the price they mention. Normally we then go through and add on bits that'll make the most difference for least extra outlay.

I've had to significantly lower my fee to get a regular weekly gig which is very local to me.. It's down to the fact that it's so convenient for me but i'm waiting until we have a couple of packed nights in a row until i try to increase my fee. The place is struggling a bit at the mo. Time of year not helping!

 

As we've only been doing Disco's/karaokes for 4 months now, we do a regular gig for a client where the fee is nothing like what we would charge elsewhere. The Landlord is a friend and we see the gig mainly as an opportunity to get other business. Its something I've thought long and hard over though, we use the same equipment as we would for a gig that pays £160, but we are only getting £90, though this is for 2 & 1/2 hrs playing time.

 

I think if one is in our position (just starting out) and we have ambitions and are very impatient, we need to accept the drop in price a little to balance out the affect it could have on getting us other business. This seems to be working because we have been getting lots of feed back from potential new customers and we seem to be developing something of a fan club who turn up to every event we stage.

Obviously we won't be able to sustain this price forvever, but at the moment its a means to an end.

 

Anyone else starting out? What do you do with regards to getting bookings?

I give a discount for a pub near me because they give me loads of work. But had a call recently asking if i would do a disco for a birthday in a different venue, so i quoted for this and the client said the last you did a party for me 3 months previous you only charged xxx amount, so when i told her that was at a discount price for that pub she tried to book the pub but could not get it.

 

She did pay what i quoted in the end.
