I disagree, I think he's an annoying old git who uses crap PCs to 'DJ'.

Bloody radio jocks, all the same. Go away.

 eh!? I've hardly been on here for weeks so gawd knows how I've managed to upset you

Besides, in a job like ours where we're continually having to deal with the public, being thick skinned is surely an important requisite to survive?... and the run-in can't have been that bad, cos I can't even remember it

Oh well, that's one more mystery solved. My guess was that Heros laptop had ascended to those Pearly (Bill) Gates, and he was off-line.

But, with a vast forum membership the size of ours, theres bound to be the occassional bout of "I don't agree with what he/she said", moe so than if we were only a 500 member forum for example.

Thankfully, the bigger the forum, the more "other" people you've got left to talk to, even if one comment from one person does niggle you one week.

Point in case, I'd never agree that a laptop is a professional class tool, BUT I'd definitely agree that, at the moment, a laptop is a tool still used by some professional DJs. I know that Hero and my viewpoints differ on that, but, its one viewpoint, on one subject - theres plenty of other hings to talk abut here, everyday.

Forums: They're a bit like lifes experiences, only... more condensed together.

Interesting point.

My son was at an allnighter recently at a London club, the music was mostly electro.

I asked him if the DJs used mostly vinyl or CD.

He said they all used laptops!.

djS (plurral = more than one) that's easy enough then, each DJ plays his/her set for 2 hours, then hands over, unplugs laptop and exits stage left - plus the night club was probably air-conditioned. Not like the usual Sharon & Rich get hitched at Olds Green war memorial sweatbox for 4 hours of background music and 4 hours of dancing.

Gary, many DJs like using a laptop with a software solution, have had zero issues with their set ups no matter what the temperature in the venue and are not interested in buying your new Denon unit.

Get over it! :moon:

Gary,

I have used a laptop since I started as a mobile DJ last year which included one nine hour gig, although I have only done about 18 gigs in total I have never had a problem with the laptops. I take two, one purely as a backup and I have never even taken it out of it's bag at a gig. The main laptop is regularly on for 8-10 hours at a time whilst I am at my day job as I use it for background music, and when it is quiet I am then able to catagorise my song library, listen to tracks I do not know, make up playlists based on genre for future convienience oor sort out tracks for my next gig.

The only software on each laptop is Windows XP media edition, Sam DJ and Freestyler DMX.

I run the DMX through Freestylers sound to light directly from the Laptops soundcard whilst running Sam and have never had a problem with either.

I am seriously considering buying a Denon DN-D4500 as an upgrade to my Citronics CT-1X cd players as I could then take a few MP3 CDs as a further backup, but the laptops would still be my main choice for use.

Eddie

I'm happy to acknowledge that some laptop users are fine with their set-ups.

I also speak to and read of many Windows-using DJs who, unfirtunately do not fair so well. Often temperature is a cause, but not the only cause.

Even part of the PCDJ website website offers this interesting, and seemingly true-to-life testimonial:

"A laptop will eventually fail at your venues due to poor cooling and poor sound etc. Remember a laptop is a multi purpose computer designed for an office or home environment."

I tend to disagree. A PC is a multi purpose computer designed for an office or home environment. A laptop is more robust, designed to be taken out on the road and survive bangs and bumps whilst in transit. Some laptops are used by field engineers in conditions a lot worse than you find at the average disco and survive. Like any tool though, you have to look after it correctly to get the best out of it.

A laptop will eventually fail at a gig................ sorry what utter garbage !!!http://planetsmilies.net/angry-smiley-8020.gif I could quite easily say your cd player XYZ will eventually fail and sooner or later I'd be proved right, could take 2 years, 20 years or 200 years but I'd be right, it would go down one night - that is such a sad unsusstainable statement it's just laughable.

My laptop is on the go 5 - 8 hours a day and I use it to gig at least twice a week, so far so good, it's been in a pub with no ventilation and temps up in the 100s, seriously HOT and still did the biz.

Do you remember the days when cd players first came on the scene? Oh my God they'll never replace good old vinyl, it really jacks me off when people don't embrace technology. By the way I'm 56 and started dj'ing in 1969, did vinly loved it and moved on, did the cd players loved it and moved on...........

You stick with whatever but I guarantee one thing if you are still in business in 30 years time as I have been, you won't be using cd's! http://planetsmilies.net/angry-smiley-248.gif

cor. Glad it wasnt my quote. and, considering that "PCDJ" is all about selling software for DJ'ing, its surprising that they mention that statement on their site.

Any sort of equipment can fail, sure. But...if somethings designed for a specific purpose, rather than "happens to be able to" then its a step in the right direction. Evolution even.

As to ye olde "What medium?" questions and discussions. again, it doesnt matter how DJs store and carry their music - (Ok, the PPL might say differently...but thats another story). There are definate benefits to DJing from a hard drive - and now there are more options for how to run that hard drive successfully for what we want.
