After a great night, we are frequently encouraged to play another song. Just as a matter of interest, without looking for a right or wrong answer -what do people do about these people?

Depends whether or not I've overrun by a few minutes already.

 

If not, then I will, but choosing that last track can be a problem as it has to be done in seconds, unless you've anticipated it and got one lined up just in case, which is what I'll usually do.

Depends how much you want to annoy and allienate the staff at the venue. Over-running to satisfy a few one off guests is all very well but if it means that the venue won't recommend you because of it then you will lose out.

 

I use the ploy of a false ending at 5 minutes before, then play them their one more, also arranging for the lights to come up at 1 minute to time so that the message goes out - it's over.

I've got away with that a few times - although never, I don't think, with American Pie.

 

I tend to use a couple of tactics to avoid playing "just one more".

 

A) The false finish - Aim to get your last (ha ha ha) record to finish about 4 minutes BEFORE you are supposed to finish eg: 12:56..."Goodnight, safe journey home etc,etc,etc,etc,etc".... in response to the calls of "Just one more" - allow them to "persuade" you into it...and hit PLAY on that track that (lo and behold) you just happened to have cued up ready on another deck - the track that they takes you up to 12:59:59.... Job done...after all they won didn't they (?)....yeah, they "forced" you to play "just one more".

 

B) (as mentioned above) Blame the management - point out how the management/venue will loose their music license if amplified non-religious music is played after HH:mm... and that you wouldnt get paid for the entire night etc,etc...

 

C) The Vote: Cue up all the good "Ending tracks" that people have asked you for - (yes, even the tracks that they didnt request until 15 minutes before the end anyway). Tell them at 12:55 that they're down to the very very very last record of the night - but that its up to THEM to choose from the following 6 or 7 track names, what that last record will be. Read em out the choices and count the hands/measure the yells... play that track that got the best reaction - they go away happy, and the people who actually wanted one of the other choices realise that they were outvoted fair and square.

Simple ....If the requester will not accept accept a no from you send them to ask the Manager/Owner of the establishment if it's ok.

 

Its just not so simple to get them to agree to that... :fear:

 

Use the multiple choice bit myself. It works very well.. Honours even and every one wins :mikee:

I normally always play one more providing I've not overrun too much.

Normally the songs are already cued up after 'New York, New York'.

Turn the disco lights off, room lights on, and hit play.

 

'I know a bear that you all know - Yogi, Yogi....'

or

'Oh darlin' I'm so horny I could die....'

I woud say it depends on where i am. I always say get the manager here to say yes and i will play it. They normally do not come back

One quick proviso on that one...(which I'm sure Jimbo knows, but hasnt mentioned yet)....Tell them that IF the management agrees to one more tune, that the manager MUST come to you and tell you him/herself to your face.

 

This avoids the antagonistic "just one more mate" person from nipping out of your view for 30 seconds (to the tune of - "he'll be gone a while, why not put a record on while we're waiting") then coming back, having spoken to no-one (or getting told "NO!"), and saying to you "Oh yes, the manager says "YES play one more").

 

Be warned though, once, when I was in a venue that I didn't know the venue staff, the requestor went away and came back with suited and posh looking "manager" who came up to me and said "yeah, one more"... but it WASNT the manager...it was requestors brother or some such imposter...

I always check with the bar staff/ manager 30 minutes before the end if I have to finish on the dot because their views can change in an instance.

For example, sometimes you are told at the start of the evening that you will finish at a certain time but when that time comes, the bar is busy and everyone is having a good time, so the manager tells you to carry on.

I will play a couple of songs more but if they want more music, they have to arrange a new "stop time" and fee.

I tend to go for the last song voting optiion, and if overrunning slightly, always check with the management.

 

Gary right about people asking the manager, don't trust anybody unless the manager speakes to you!

I always over-run by at least 2 or 3 minutes, then I am afraid it's a polite and courteous but firm "No".

 

After that, it becomes increasingly less polite and increasing less courteous.

 

I had one bloke at a wedding a few years back who was so insistant, he was still arguing for one more song as I carried out my last piece of equipment!

I am quite suprised how many people lie, no wonder the mobile djs reputation is a bit shady !

The first thing I try to do is head the situation off before it happens, by making announcements half an hour before the end, that "we're into the last half hour now", then a "these are the last few tracks", then "this is the last track".

 

I then make sure that I cue up another track, just in case I get a request for "one more" (so if I need it, I don't need to search around for another track). Usually I'm working with a promoter, so they take the hassle off me from the venue. I'll look for a nod from the promoter for whether I can play one more track and then go with it or not, depending on that.

 

If it's a new venue to me, I'll also check with the promoter at the start of the event how sharp the venue is on finishing. Does 2am mean 2am or 2.15 or 1.45? Then I can plan how I'm going to finish accordingly.

 

Sometimes I can push it with the venue. When I'm DJing at a weekend event at a holiday camp, for example, and I'm doing the last slot of the night, the promoters might want me to go on until 5.30, but the venue might push for a finish at 5. In that case, I'll just keep going until the staff come over and tell me that this has to be the last track. And even then, if there's a fair size crowd left, they will start shouting for one more, the guy will radio someone (or maybe pretend to radio someone) and then let me put on one more. I've finished a night in this way many times, so it's almost like they expect things to happen this way.

I do try that - "while you're fixing X, can you just take a quick look at Y" or "can you just give me some extra dips with that" or whatever.

I always slow it down, leaving time for a couple of lively ones......

By this time they are all knackered. and want to sit down...they think I have played a few extra as New Yourk New York was the expected finish and every one goes home happy....

Personally speaking, I always try to finish dead on time. If however, the usual "One More" chants come out my way then I explain that, that's all folks. If I feel really evil I will put on something at low volume that they can't dance too (usually the theme from 'Steptoe and Son' hahaha). If the manager agrees and tells me so, then I will of course play one more for them. If they don't agree and I am still getting hassle then I will blame the venue or management (but I will tell the management afterwards that I did it to cover myself and they are always thankful) OR...and this is a good one....I say that my Public Liability Insurance only covers me for the duration of the evening as stated on the booking form so if I am covered from 8pm - Midnight then that's fine but if it goes past midnight then I am not covered.

 

Yes, stretching the truth slightly but it works.
