Weddings at 'lowest ever' level

Fewer couples are choosing to tie the knot. The number of adults choosing to marry is at its lowest level since records began, according to new figures.

Some 244,710 people wed in 2005 - the lowest number since 1896 - and, as the number of unmarried adults rose, it was the lowest marriage rate since 1862.

The Office for National Statistics said the rates in England and Wales were 24.2 per 1,000 unmarried men over 16 and 21.6 per 1,000 unmarried women.

One factor is thought to be a new law to discourage so-called sham marriages.

The figures also showed the continuing trend for couples to marry when they are older. In the 10 years since 1995, the average age to marry has increased to 36 for men, and 33 for women.

Across the UK, weddings were down 10% in 2005 compared with the previous year.

Marriages fell in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for the first time in three years.

We have more people waiting longer and living together for longer before they marry

Relate

A Church of England spokesman said: "The figures are worrying, as the Church teaches that marriage is the best option for couples to grow together in mutual support.

"We would like to see fuller figures on marriage that explain the recent fall, after two years of increase, and that take account of the growing appeal of getting married abroad."

The relationship support agency Relate said the statistics might show the state of marriage, but not that of committed couples.

A spokesman said: "We have more people waiting longer and living together for longer before they marry.

"That's because they want to be sure that they want the same things and that the marriage will be stable and healthy."

OK, so that's 244,710 people that got married - that's about a quarter of a million. But...half of them married the other half, so thats 122,355 weddings per annum in the UK (that year anyhow).

Divide that by our 4000 members, and phew... only 30 weddings for each of us.

Indeed, some wedding specialist DJs may already have arranged alternative incomes....

Gary you didn't take into account those couples who choose not to have a disco.

Here's the voting from NI:

  • 2002 - 7599 marriages
  • 2003 - 7757 marriages
  • 2004 - 8328 marriages
  • 2005 - 8140 marriages

2006 figures are not yet available. The jump in 2004 was partly due to a relaxation in the rules which allowed people from outside the area to marry here.

I do approx 1% of these smile icon

I tell everyone that i meet that getting married is the best thing that you can do. ( for some reason i get asked out more now that i am married)

I think that sells it to those that think it will stop them getting more fun (tongue in cheek)

Two points I would make in relation to the survey:

The marriage figures relate only to marriages taking place in the constituent countries of the United Kingdom. They take no account of marriages of UK residents taking place abroad.

I believe there has been a significant increase in the number of couples choosing to marry abroad due to the cost of marrying here, most of these will return to the UK and still have a "reception" with a disco.

Secondly, after studying the figures and small print on the Office of National Statistics website I can only conclude that the above marriage figures does not include Civil Partnerships.

There has been a considerable growth in these "unions" over 2006 and I believe that this trend will continue in 2007/8.

There is certainly no doom and gloom from where this Wedding professional is standing.

Sorry to be sceptical, tell that to the husbands that end up loosing everthing they ever worked for in the divorce courts!!

Thats why nobody is getting married, too much to lose!!

The law is firmly on the womens side in nearly every case, sobeit coz of the kids most of the time, But still the man will lose the lot, his home, his wife, his self respect, his dog, and then pay a load of maintainence...... making him live in a "bed sit land" until the kids come of age!

I was lucky because my wife left me with the kids, but some people i know are at rock bottom because of marriages that didnt work out.

But dont worry lads, the good news is....you get to see a great view off blackpool tower when yout holding your "fathers rights banner" up........yeah, got to go to court to see ya own kids sometimes!!

sceptical iknow, but very true!!

besides there are no tax incentives to it now. i think the generation below us are more interested in getting a career than getting married and have replaced the ball and chain with a Mercedes

All well and good if people will pay higher prices - but the majority won't. :(
