Apologies if this has been covered before....but

I am getting graphics put on my new van tomorrow, I had home made signs on my old one for 2 years and it generated at least 10 bookings that I know about so this time i have splashed out to get a pro job done by a nationwide proffessional company.

Anyone else have their van / car with their disco name on it ......if so what about a piccy ?? I will post mine when done ( if I like the finished article )

The other reason for posting this is whilst in my front garden on friday another disco drove past with the name Disco's revenge plastered over the side of the vehicle.....nothing odd about that........... until I looked more closely at the vehicle....... It was a hearse with blacked out windows...... how cool is that :bouncy:

Anyone on here own the hearse and discos revenge ??

No I have never advertised that my vehicle is full of kit... I think most people in this day and age want to see your work before making a booking anyway...

On the Hearse front yes very cool but not sure you would want it at a wedding lol

The only time the vehicle is full of kit is when I am in it. I obviously wouldn't leave it lying around full with the advert on the van to potential thieves

When I was getting quotes for insurance they did ask if the vehicle had signwriting on. The premium did not change when I asked if it was different without, the only difference being the signwriting is covered as well if it gets damaged ........wasnt expecting that answer...and I expected the premium to be higher.

Also when I asked the insurance company.. a higher percentage of vans that are broken into have no signwriting on ( not sure that means anything tho' )

reminds me of a very sad moment about a gig i done.. a wedding which was one of the best nights work i have done fantastic night floor was rammed all night... finished and got loads of hugs of the father in law and a 20 pound tip i refused but the guy was extremly insistent so i reluctently accepted as i didnt want to offend then after i packed away the groom calapsed and died of a heart attack on his wedding night so so sad and made front page news in the local paper.... sorry if i put a downer on the topic.

any way back on topic i dont advertise on transport and personally for me wont as for the potential of chancers breaking in whilst i,am working regardles of gear present in the van as chancers wont know if there is etc

still learning, still experiencing, still dj,ing

And you also increase the risk of the local P:cense:d up, disgruntled, 'Why can't I MC?' letting your tyres down on his way home, whilst you are inside packing up

Not for me, although I used to use magnetic signs. Personally think it's a big " Come and have a look inside just in case..." advert to potential thieves.

The plus points are that it's a big advert, but I doubt any "quality" venues will book on the strength of that alone.

It may work for you, remember that once sign written, the vans re-sale value will be less.

Wouldnt do it personally, However i may consider the magnectic type which kngy mentioned.

where did you get those from ?

Had some of those done, at the time for the car as the trailer itself was wooden...got them from a local graphics outlet - about A3 size, 2 for £30 (literally just writing on a background tho, no pictures.)

Open up the good ol' yellow pages and look under graphis or signwriters, you'll find hundereds!

I have magnetic strips on mine... www.make-a-sign.co.uk

I have them on the van when I'm driving around in the week (the van is empty) and then on the evening when I am going to the venue, they come off.

I haven't had them on long but I have had a few calls where people have seen me out and about.

Sad ! sounds like you guys all live in the ghetto ! I dont even have to lock the house at night let alone worry about people nicking my gear because a dj name is on the side.

I will try anything,once!

true as where i,am based can be seen as quite colourful in some eyes! although if i was to do so i wud go with the magnetic way you lot have mentioned where it can come off and on like kingy said your van re-sale value wont be affected plus you wont have to pay for the sign to be re written on a new van, sounds good

I wouldn't.

The rason being it draws 2 types of attention. Good and bad.

The reason being is that is likely to be full of expensive kit, so whether you park outside a village hall or your own driveway, people will know the type of stuff kept in their, and you are increasing the chances of a break-in. I wouldn't feel safe leaving it. I thief wouldn't know whether the vehicle is full of empty would they? Is their any insurances issues having your name on it? I would check.

I know some people who do advertise their disco on the van, and they say it brings in extra work. It's one of those preference things again.

I used to, but not for the last 5 years or so.

Reason ?

I do a lot of freelance work too, for another side of a business, and wouldn't get at much if I had an ad on the side of the van.

Thieves know what (maybe) is inside

The functions I do, I do not want you advertising on my van as it looks tacky IMO.

Which company would I advertise.

If people want a DJ then they will book a DJ. If they want me, they will find me.

.....but what do I know ?

having your name on the van etc is a good way of advertisement but for me i look at it this way (sorry does sound pesimistic) it gets broken in to but yeah luckely i off loaded the van yesterday so no gear nicked or a was working so yeah the gear was with me in use nothing gone..............................

dam it got to pay for new locks as someone has gone at them with a screwdriver or worse??

I'm in the advert for theives camp too.

I had to leave my van quite a distance from a city centre venue last night, which meant i wasn't able to check up on it.

It was a console and lights only job, so of course my full PA and loads more lights, trussing etc. were left in the van.

It felt risky enough with nothing written on the side, let alone letting people know that there's valuable stuff inside!

Another problem, is if you do agency work, or work under other DJs names then obviously you can't be showing your own advertising.

I work with quite a few local DJs in exchanging work, so again.. its not an option for me.

I would also worry about the fact that if you advertise that you are DJ people who live near might work out that you are out and because of the work that you do you are unlikely to be back in before 11. Where as they would not know what you do and you might come back at any point

The only reason I've ever considered sign writing is to indicate to the client who you are.

Take the average village hall event. Client is setting up the tables and maybe sorting out the buffet, and a van/box trailer pulls up outside. If it has your company logo on it, you've been identified; Otherwise they may guess it's you, but not be sure.

From a business point of view, this offers no return whatsoever, which is why I don't do it.

Advertising?

Maybe for some, but I can't see it helping me much.

a good advert for business? really?. when was the last time you jotted down the details of the side of a van at traffic lights or on the road, how many of you actually carry a pen and paper for that very purpose?. i'm getting old and in 23 years of driving i am proud to say that i have never used the side of a van to procure a service!. Signwriting is good for only 3 things. Advertising your name to the oiks who'll part you from your gear faster than the government parts you with cash, reducing the value of your vehicle when it comes to part exchanging it and spoiling surprise birthdays when the person turns up on the car park and sees knobby's disco painted in huge fluorescent letters on the transit parked right near the firedoor. Most insurance companies will also load your premium with the higher risk factor too, thats why they ask the question on the online quote forms.
