The next candidate for interview is DJKray

How long have you been DJ'ing?

I helped my uncles out a few time about 12 years ago but did my first solo gig just under 8 years ago! At a snooker hall.

What inspired you to become a DJ?

Well my uncles both dj'ed and ive always loved music, i did a lot of acting at school so as i liked to entertain people.

What type of "Do" was your first gig?

My first solo gig was a 18th bithday for my freinds girlfriend.

How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shilings and pence to decimal when its your go..)

40 pounds

What equipment did you have to begin with?

A all in 1 twin record deck, 2 really basic speakers, which i got free from the portsmouth guidhall where i used to work as a stage tech, a geto blaster for its cd player pluged in through the line in, a 4 bulb traffic light and a 2 shoe box full of cds. thinking about it how did i ever get 40 quid for it was really good

Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

while djing in the carwash in magaluf i got very very drunk and started dancing with the professional dancers on the stage.

What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, funeral wake..

my fav mobile function is prob 21st but i really prefer club work nowadays i get more chance to play music that i personally prefer.

Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms)

Just really being able to use the mic well, when i first started i could really only say hello and time at the bar!

What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"?

I don't like to think of myself as better but if pushed i think its my range of music that im good at playing i.e rock n roll right up the the latest hip hop and dance genre's and everything in between (the only music im not to good with is rock and indi) and to be able to mix them well when required or use the mic to entertain.

Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadnt? and why?

My final scratch and laptop which im now going to sell.

Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be?

Prob a denon 1500 mixer oh and some new lights which i will be speaking to chris about very soon.

If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

Most i what i want has been metiond before i.e small self setting up eqipment plus i would also like everysong ever released stored on a hard drive which could then be loaded into you cd players or record decks with a really quick search system thus killing off those idiots who sit there all night thinking of really rare songs that they know you wont have, just so they can say what sory of dj are you.

What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing.

Having a crowd clap you at the end of a night or having the bride and groom say that you have made there wedding.

What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing.

Pleople speaking to you like you are a idiot (but im sure this happens in a lot of jobs)

What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything).

going deaf or people getting ruder to me.

How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

I think djing will mainlly change via the media we use i.e vinyl jocks switching to cds and mobile dj's turning to harddisk based systems.

Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

Nobody likes this music while i had a capacity club full of 2000 people all packed onto the dance floor all dancing this happened on monday just gone.

Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Always play to the crowd not yourself.

And worst advice you were ever given

The opposite of the above.

Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!!

Billie jean - Michael jackson

I want you back - Jackson 5

Stuck in the middle with you - stealers wheel

Age

27

Location

Portsmouth

Martial status

Single/ with long term girlfriend

Education level

5 GCSE's 2 A levels ive just started uni now aswell (and i still can't spell so come on chris and add a spell check to the site please)

Mode of transportation

Vauxhall astra

What equipment do you currently use?

2x pioneer 500s 1 denon dns-5000 pioneer djm500 2x peavy hisis 2s speakers with a peavy amp. lights - id rather not say

What was your reason for becoming a DJ?

It just happened i did a few partys for friends and kept getting asked to do another i never ever said i want to start djing and before i knew it i was working regular and investing in equipment.

Approximately how many gigs have you done to date

Prob around the 2000 mark but i did work 7 nights a week while in spain.

Again im sorry about my poor spelling im not as stupid as my spelling suggests.

I've been trying to for some time now, but it really is hard work since I have to pull the forum apart to do it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif .

I've always been good at pulling stuff apart - it's just the putting back together again that lets me down - like when I was 9, and tried to autopsy the Hamster - that Quincy bloke on the Tele had a lot to answer for! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif

The trick Chris, is to wait until the Hampster has kicked the bucket before attempting to autospy the poor little furball. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sterb188.gif

A good interview there DJ_Kray... you mention "mic skills" just weeks after winning the radio mic. Do you think the Radio Mic will change your gigs/performance in any way?

It seems a shame that you would consider giving up DJ'ing if people became rude towards you, but I know that some punters, do let their alcohol tell them to be rude to any figure of authority in a club; The DJ, the bar staff, in fact anyone other than the bouncers, for some reason. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/box.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sterb188.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fish.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/box.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/box.gif

Oh, and it looks like we're both waiting for the same "next purchase" to come out.

Hi

good interview.

I love these interviews, gives you the feeling that you got something in common with everyone.

Incidentally, The footie ground for Portsmouth is Franton Park, which when spelled backwards is krap not arf http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Can't really say that these days though.

The radio mic will give me more fredom to move around i already use 1 at the club i dj at.

I nearlly quit a few months ago after i had done a few gigs in a row and the people were so rude to me so i was going to quit mobiling and just do clubs where you can get the bouncers to get rid of said idiots but then i djed a couple of really good weddings where the b&g said i had made there day and it reminded me what i can get from dj'ing.

Yes paula i could do with a dictionary http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif

Every Xmas & Birthday I would get presents with the strict instruction not to take them apart but a few hours later I'd be under the kitchen table 'Just to see how they worked'. I always got found out because I could never get them re-assembled properly. Eventually the family bought me something I could dismantle to my hearts content - Lego http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif
