Landrover Freelander

Recommended Posts

Never ever ever buy a freelander pre 2003 because yon might get one like mine that just disintegrated. You would not believe a) the repairs i have had done in the last year b) the amount of money i lost on it. :damn:

Like all makes and models of cars, there are little quirks and probs to deal with.

I too own a Reanult Scenic and have had a fair share of minor and annoying probs but 'touch wood', not as bad as what I've read with other owners and their expensive probs.

That said, I have an outstanding problem that is very expensive to deal with that is on hold.

The car that gave me the least problems was actually an M reg Ford Escort Diesel but it lacked oomph and of course room for the disco gear. About the best feedback I've heard on the later ford models was that the Galaxy wasn't too bad. Owned a Mondeo which was very comfortable, not bad on fuel but again, no room. The Mondeo Estates look allright but I never ventured.

Previously, owned a Renault Espace that was fantastic for transporting the gear, loads of room, not bad on fuel... but engine wise it was a disaster and it died!

Years ago, the old Vauxhall Astra Estate was a great little work-horse. Literally ran that into the ground....a Nissan Estate I owned in the late 80's kept on going and going but the bodywork fell apart.

Most probs and nightmares I've experienced with motors were Vans.

Same goes for me.....but then I wouldn't have ANYTHING based on British motor engineering....apart (perhaps) from Caterham or TVR

Vauxhall? Rover?....burn your money, it's easier

Best car I ever had was a Rover 827 SLI, economical, comfortable and took of like a rocket when needed. people who critisize British enginering are simply showing their ignorance because Britian has produced some of the best engineers the world have ever seen. People like Brunel, Telford, Frank Whittle, Barnes Wallis, George Stephenson, Rolls and Royce to name but a few. its the failure of the politians to capitalise and support the success of British engineering, which has led to the demise of the industry

Virtually starved and out of ammunition 2 Para finally surrenderd at Arhnem.

German engineering isn't all its cracked up to be either. I've spent far more on a German Engineered car in the past 12 months, than I ever did in total during 4 years of ownership of a British Built Vauxhall. I've also just found that this particular model, and year has two very well known documented faults, namely Turbo (£2500+), and the Engine Manifold breaking and falling into the engine resulting in total engine failure, something to look forward too.

In twelve months i've spent £600 on a Catalytic Convertor, £500 on Brakes, £180 on rear springs and £150 on a new MAF sensor. I've also just fitted a new intercooler costing £110, which okay, was due to rock damage as a direct result of the state of Croatia's minor roads rather than poor engineering, but it was twice the price of the same part for another similar car.

Like any other cars, and wherever its built, its a 50/50 chance whether you buy a peach or a lemon, and all cars have their problems. In the UK, a 3rd party warranty bought online, is also a good idea when buying a 2nd hand car / van privately, for a £285 outlay I had £700 worth of the above repairs done for only a £25 excess.

My first van cost £500 from an Auction and was 8 years old, and in the next three years it was ultra reliable and cost little to maintain. In the years that followed I paid more than ten times that for a car with 27k miles and the mechanic was in it more than me!.

If you want true reliability, buy a Honda!.

You are about right there, I have had 2 toyotas from new to 160K miles, no problems at all, and my Mrs had a Rav4 for about 80K miles, 1 problem fixed under extended warranty  :nbow:

I think that land rovers are pap my friend works in the sales room for them and say how often they come back in with one problem or another.

Some cars that i have had are great but others not laguna was a good car but the two that i had the gear box went. Brought a Saxo and the engine bolt snapped so the engine fell down. erm o c2 the engine management went stange and the car nearly cooked its self. Garage described it as "a very ill car".

I have found that the old ford escort that i had was about the cheapest but then again the parts where that cheap so not sure that it was better only cheaper. At the end of the day i have seen a landrover pull a truck out of a ditch my little LDV van struggles pulling itself :dan+ju:

Skodas are supposed to be good now!! not in my experience, had 2 of them and they were both lemons, had to threaten the dealer to take em back!!

You'll never belive what i drive now, a 2006 vauxhall corsa, which, so far, has given me no problems. With the assistance of a roof rack, i can even get all my kit, including my trussing in it and on it at the same time!! (sits a bit low though lol)

We got a brand new Kia Sedona in 2002. It was my first ever brand new car. Up until five or six weeks ago I would have recommended this vehicle to anyone requiring a people carrier - seven seats, large enough boot to hold two large dogs, never let us down, built like a tank with a brilliant engine. With a full service history and only 50k miles on the clock I was driving on the M3 when it started to 'judder'.

Long story short, imagine my surprise when I was told it would cost £4k to fix!

On the up side, both the Green Flag and RAC mechanics who worked on it, roadside, said that they had never worked on a Sedona before. I enquired which car gave them the most trouble...I was very surprised to hear which manufacturer it was. Have a guess and then scroll down to see...

had a vauxhall corsa for 3 years until last monday... little cracker!! only just got rid because of the boot space so my new investment is a ford focus estate much, much bigger and it has a lot more power so when your fully loaded it don't need sliproad like a runway to get it up to 70!!... hopefully the focus will be a good car! its on a T plate at one hundred & twelve thousand!! a lot of miles i know, but for £1,000 bargin! its the gear model aswell they wanted £1,500 but because it needs the cambelt & a service got it for a grand!! happy chap!
