Selling A Record Collection

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of selling my record collection which consists of thousands of vinyl including some rare stuff, covering a huge amount of music genres (not gonna be selling the CDs though).

Can anyone give pointers on good places to sell this.

The majority is probably soul/funk/rare-groove from the 70's & 80's-maybe 10,000 or so albums, 12"s & 7"'s.

Plus a few thousand reggae albums, 12s & 7s including ska, studio 1, lovers rock, dancehall etc.

and at least 5,000 general pop including motown, rock n roll, 60's, rock, punk, new wave, 2-tone, 70's, 80's, easy listening, 90's etc plus some world music.

Not sure of the actual amount of pieces of vinyl, although would be easy to find out as virtually all of them are catalogued using CATraxx.

The collection also includes every Streetsounds release including most of the electro albums. The Streetsounds box sets-Philadelphia Story & Dance Decade.

Includes almost every release on DMC between 84 & 92 and many on Mastermix.

Very unlikely I'm gonna find one buyer for all of it so will likely split into many small lots, interested in idea's on where would be the best places to sell it?

Interesting point this. If you have stuff duplicated on CD does it really matter?

I was once very attached to my vinyl but I sold a lot of Motown, Soul and Blues 45s, some fetching £hundreds each and it didn't hurt a bit!

Record Collector magazine is quite good for this, as is the Rare Record Price Guide they publish.

I've sold rare vinyl on Ebay at good prices, some of which surprised me.

Would you consider selling to a specialist dealer?

Bri', for years i always said (even up until 2 days ago!) that i would NEVER sell my vinyl, then earlier i actually gave it some thought... when was the last time i actually played ANY of my vinyl? bleedin years ago, all the stuff i couldn't buy on cd I've transferred to CD; so there doesn't seem any point in keeping it, all it's doing is taking up huge amounts of space, plus I'll be moving soon and it'd mean having to pay a monthly fee to put them all in storage (because there wouldn't be enough room in the new place). this seems ridiculous for something I NEVER use?!

Nope, it's ALL going. The dosh will come in handy anyway

That's exactly why I got rid of my stuff in the first place, maybe you're right, as you've transferred all of it onto mp3. Maybe I should buy your collection!

That reminds me; there is also loads of house; especially early house and chicago house.

I don't think I would ever sell my vinyl, but I guess you must have thought long and hard about it.

But I would be interested in seeing a list Tony, if it's something you can easily run off. However nowadays I would only buy anything that's not available on CD (and that I don't have already) and generally only 12" singles. But knowing you, I'm sure that's quite a lot of your stuff.

I'm sure you will consider the bit rate that its ripped at. I would keep anything ripped at less than 320Kbs so that you can re-ripp it one day. (Only day I will have all my vinyl collection ripped to wav/flac, but it will take me years, and I may never complete it - I've been ripping my CD's for around a year and still haven't got half way.)

I couldn`t sell mine. One iof my mate bought an old American juke box, so I gave him all my records. I told him to tip the ones he didn`t use.

The only thing I miss abouth them is Boris the spider and his family that built their home on my cases in the shed.

ive been thinking about the same thing for years but just cant bring myself round to doing it.

the streetsounds and electro albums are worth quite a bit tony.

tony prince rang me over 15 years ago when i was trying to sell some of the dmc albums and cassettes. i think a member abroad was desperate to get hold of them as dmc had no more copies available. the offer was very good but he wanted certain ones that i would never sell ie. james brown megamix and a few by dakeyne and les adams.

good luck mate.

just think of all the grub you could buy tongue out icon

Ebay them!

You'll be surprised at what you get for them, I have a guy in Germany who's always contacting me asking when my next load of Reggae is going up if you want to make contact.

Tony as many have said try Ebay, also Record Collector have set sale ads in the back of the mag, which might be useful to you as well.

There are a few specialist dealers in London, Record and Tape Exchange is probably the most well known in Notting Hill Gate, I always pop in there anytime i'm in London, they have a Soul/Dance shop now too, which might be the place to offload some of your stuff.

Someone mentioned Beanos in Croydon, they would probably give you a better price?

The early Lovers Rock stuff(esp on British labels) is very rare nowadays, esp the ones on small labels like Hawkeye etc, it might be worth putting together a list and placing an ad in RC.

I know Daddy Kool in London used to buy stuff, don't know if they still do....

Same goes for the Studio 1 stuff, esp the 60's/70's things...some of that stuff is worth a mint nowadays..

Same goes for the early house stuff, in fact RC ran a feature about that stuff a couple of years ago, some of which is worth a small fortune!

Same goes for the British Jazz Funk stuff, and the Streetsounds LPs have been unavailable for many years..(very much collectors items!)

Funny enough I have been thinking of doing the same and transfering it all to CD, it's amazing what over 30 years of music spacewise takes up...Although like many, there are lots of memories attached to the vinyl:)

I would however be interested in seeing a list too, as there are things probably I would be interested in too!

In case anyone is interested in any of the vinyl I have for sale you can view a list of them here:

http://www.winyard.com/records.htm

About 250 were sold a few days ago which was mainly reggae and a few soul.

Just realised that not all the vinyl is on this list. For example it only mentions a few of the DMC stuff, but there is actually virtually every release on DMC between 85 and 92.

Thanks for the link most of the stuff on the list I have too!

Nice to the see the original version of Simply Red's-Money is too tight to mention on the list, that must be kinda rare in that version!

You also mention the Beatles-Please Please Me LP(is that the original 1963 release or a reissue..as it affects it's price on the open market!) the orig 1963 version with a certain label and sleeve is worth a small fortune:)

It would certainly suit a Funk/Soul/Dance DJ who is maybe starting in the business and looking for back catalogue stuff..

However maybe you should price the list too, as that will get more people interested:)
