Would You Leave Your Equipment Overnight?

Recommended Posts

Right here's the situation, I am doing a disco for an insurance institution next Friday, they want me to set up around 6 for speech's / raffle ect. usually this wouldnt be a problem but Im working about 70 mile away in the daytime and wouldnt get there and set up in time. Im thinking of asking the hotel the function is in if it would be ok to set my equipment up on the thursday night and leave it there so I can go straight from work on Friday.

What would you do? Has anyone been in this situation before?

if have you worked the hotel before and know the equipment would be safe and out of the way then it wouldnt a problem,we leave ours during the xmas period when we do a fri/sat right after each other, when i take a booking i look at where i am during the day to make sure i can get to where i got to be before taking it(but sometimes things change),if in your situation i would ask a friend to take it and start setting up for me if possible .not sure your pli would cover if anything happens and your not there.

No, I would not leave my stuff there overnight unless the client offered insurance cover. Which I doubt they will.

Work round it if you want the gig!!

I had an occasion where I had a gig on a Friday and Saturday at the same venue. Would have been great to leave the gear overnight - but the bar manager of the prison club concerned advised against it as she said the club got used during the day and she couldn't guarantee that it would be safe. When I checked with my insurance company they said it wouldn't be covered unless it was in locked room.

:(

So,now, I never leave any of my gear.

They don't call me Krazy for nothing! Krazy by name - Krazy by nature !!!

Could you leave the gear there but in a cupboard some where locked up and do the set up when you arrive?

I have done this before as i dont like leaving my gear set up as its asking for someone to play around with it

Yes I would, and often do leave kit in places for days on end

Downside is odd bits may go missing, worst thing I have 'lost' is a laptop computer.

.....but what do I know ?

I would ask for something in writing off the venue that if something happens they will let you claim off them or the room has to be locked, & you keep the key if possible

I've been in similar positions before and have left my gear (set up) overnight but I have always made sure that I didn't leave my music.

You can replace the equipment but not always your sounds!

I've often left my gear in my local village hall overnight, and on occasions elsewhere, but I always remove all the wiring, and take that and my music home. Any flight-cased bits of gear are cased up and locked where possible.

Just think, if anything did happen - you would be in safe hands!

I hate leaving my equipment just for a few minutes let alone a whole night so would not leave it.

You rekon? I think they would try everything to get out of a claim!

Whether I leave kit on site, depends entirely on the site. I have done so in the past, and have also chosen not to as well.

I actualy prefer leaving my gear over night ! If i am doing a mobile gig then i will set up the day before but take my flight case with mixer etc home with me.But leaving large speakers etc ..... not a prob for me.

Mind you there is less crime in Norway !

I will try anything,once!

I've left gear overnight many times, and only ever had something nicked once, way back in the early 80's someone nicked my cart machine, no use to them as it was proper carts not 8 track !

I've never had a problem in the last 10 years or so in West Wales, but then again I always take CD's, computer, mic's, and any small easy liftable stuff with me.

I've moved to Norway now though (gear coming over soon) and as Chris said there's much less crime over here, I haven't even seen a cop car on the motorway to Oslo in months !!

Regularly leave my kit in venues overnight because i've had a few drinks. Ironically the only bit of kit ever gone missing was a few grands worth of graphic equaliser which was ready to be loaded out to the van. Someone walked up and simply picked it up while our backs were turned.

My speakers aren't on my insurance as if someone wants over a tonne of boxes in a hurry then they deserve it for the planning thats gone into it (and i'm sure i'd catch them if they were on foot....). Stuff in cases with conveniently placed handles is the biggest risk. a flightcase says 'Ooh, look at me, I'm in a tough shiny case, so i must be expensive'

Even more ironic, someone walked into our hallway in the middle of the night a few weeks back (late drinking, forgot to lock) and took off with 6 years of CD's (mostly CDR backups fortunately) which were ready to go in the van the next day for a big gig in London. Fortunately my mixers and and CDJ's weren't there also as they normally are...

  • 1 year later...

set up all your big gear and table but dont leave anything small n nickable.

another pointer...dont set your speakers on stands as if they fall on a cleaner doin a pole dance larkin about u will be liable for claim against you a(and v slippy stands tongue out icon )

any mixers that have covers leave on to avoid pll playing around.

Yes and yes

So everyone who does Xmas bookings every night in December takes their kit down every single night ?

I often have to do it for the same reason.

.....but what do I know ?

Yep - I've had to, at the request of the venue, although they did let me leave an ultimax stand set up once (with nothing else mind!).
