The golf club that I work for here in Portugal has just built a new clubhouse with resaurant/bar/shop and locker room as well as a new swimming pool and fitness centre in a separate building.

They have just installed a massive sound system which covers both buildings(I think the company that installed it do all Witherspoon outlets in England)

Anyway the bossman has asked me to install all the music which is a bit of a challenge in itself and I have also got to do a lot of playlists too.

Can any of you see any pitfalls that I should be aware of.

We havent even spoke about payment.Any advice would be helpful

install all the music ??

where are you getting the music from ?

do they have the licence from the local version of the PRS ?

dont just fill the comupter up with downloads... if they get inspected the boss will just balme you...

Yep, Marko Van Baston has just hit all the nails on the head. Be very careful and check out the Portugese laws.

If we look at another venue out where you are based, who also have DJs, how do they work?

Do they use their own equipment or is the system used owned by the venue? Is the music theirs or purchased by the venue?

Say the equipment is owned by the venue but the music (majority of) was supplied by the DJ.

What would happen if the DJ moved on? Does he or she take the music with them or to the point, delete the music transfered to the owners equipment?

Perhaps I should make things a little clearer.

Its got nothing to do with djing. They want a bucket load of music on their system in one form or another.Initially they will have a database of say 3/4000 tracks to pick from and they want a number of playlists done so that they mix and match them and pipe them thro their system to all parts of the building.

Its the same as any other large complex with piped music.

The only difference is that they want me to supply them with the music from my collection rather than purchase it from a recognised supplier.By the way does anybody have a link to any of these suppliers.

The fact that they want to use my music is why I also asked you guys what your idea of payment should be.

Supply - you are selling your music, right? smile icon

You might want to base your fees on the sort of prices that second hand shops retail at in the UK, for example, £2 - £4 per album, £0.50p - £1.00 per CD single.

Best have a look at some sites like Amazon and compare prices.

if you sell them your collection then what will you use to DJ with....

no you cant sell it to them and keep your CDs...

if they want music on there system they should buy it like the rest of us have too... your putting your self out of work by helping them replace the DJ with a computer full of your music ...

you need to help them sorce original music and make sure they have the local licences for public performance of this music or walk away and stay out of it...

For about £50 per month a computer can be purchased that has a few thousand tracks on it and will mix and play tracks. All the tracks will have the correct license and PRS and all that stuff.

Most clubs and pubs have these systems.

Rolec is probably the most famous system.

I do have a contact for a new system if you are interested at around £30.

If you are offering your venue a copy of your CD's then you are acting as a CD pirate and effectively committing a crime!

To make matter worst you have advertised what you are doing on this forum.....

IMHO --- stop and get them to buy a proper system

Lets put it another way.

I shall be keeping all my music.

They want me to put alot of my albums and singles onto their system.

The stuff that I would probably use for any main disco work that I might do probably wont be on the system.

I thought I might charge them for my time and effort rather than for each track.

I would assume that they will have a licence as they already have live music. With this new clubhouse they are going to start dinner dances

Music collection agencies across europe are 'effecting' pan-wide law.

Tip: If you are unsure on the law and where you stand, speak to the professionals and seek professional advice.

The install company ( if they do the installs for weatherspoons) will be well aware of the systems available to play music.

Your employers is using you to get cheap illegal music.

It could be seen that if you sell him your tracks ( as copies) that he has the right to use them and that you don't have the right to use your CD's!

Right,next installment.

They have the relevant licence.

At the moment I have to all intents and purposes finished djing for a living.I still buy tracks and keep up to date as much as I can because when I come back to England I expect to begin djing for Modern Jive again.

There appears to be no dj work where I am dispite my efforts to get some.I have had 3 jobs in 12 months.Meanwhile my collection is just taking up space and is not getting used.If I put some of that collection onto a system that will use it as background music I dont see a problem.Or am I being terribly niave.

I dont think that I can really be bothered with the attitude of they are getting something for nothing,at my age it doesnt strike me as being an issue worth worrying about.

Its my music and if I want to give it to whoever surely thats my business. If when the time comes for me to come home I take it all off their system,is that not legal.

In any case if they wanted to be really clever all they need to do is back up the database on to a hard drive and I wouldnt be any the wiser.

Sorry if I am repeating myself guys but as I see it its still my music,I am in control of it(putting it on the system, making playlists and choosing playlists)and its certainly not doing me out of any work.

I have just had a thought. As I will be familiar with the computer system I could become a computer dj if they have a need for a function. No more carrying heavy gear up and down stairs.

are you being thick on purpose.....????

Whoe there sunshine,If you cant be pleasant dont bother.

There are lots of things that go on in this business that I dont necessarily agree with but cant be a###ed with.

I happen to know a few members of Dj forums that say they dont download illegally but thats just because they dont want hassle from people like you.You know as well as I do that where there is an opportunity to get something for nothing the majority of people will take that opportunity.

If they want to take the risk thats their choice. As far as I am concerned its none of my business.

No I dont know the ins and outs of this particular problem because I chose to bury my head in the sand about the problem and on the face of it it seems quiet unfair. In the meantime I will read up on it and make a decision.

I still find it hard to comprehend that I cant do what I want, with what is as far as I know, legally mine.

I have been a member of this forum for quite a long time and quite frankly I am cheesed off with all this holier than thou attitude. Its a fact of life,it doesnt matter whether you are a big business making millions or a hard up dj trying to make ends meet,if you can cut corners you will.

get over it mate your being an ass...

with what is as far as I know, legally mine

the only thing thats legaly yours is a licence to listen to the music...

you dont have a licence to copy the music...

a lot of people here are working hard to make the business a fair legal and level playing feild for all DJs..

if you come along and undermine all the hard work with some rubish about you not seeing how your hurting anyone by stealing some music then there is no hope for the DJ business...

next time your on here going on about how some kid is doing your gigs now cos he undercut your price dont come crying to us about it...

You know as well as I do that where there is an opportunity to get something for nothing the majority of people will take that opportunity

you must be talking about your self now...

I am cheesed off with all this holier than thou attitude

your on a forum which can be seen by members of the public... next time you decide to brake the speed limmit dont forget to video it and post the evidence on youtube so the police can send you a ticket...

At the end of the day, life is a learning curve and if mistakes have to be made to get where one is, continue and make the mistakes. In the end, there is only one truth that matters - to ones self!

Of course, when one asks for advice, listen to those that pass it on, having made mistakes themselves for sure... Nobody is perfect, true, but the forum is here to share and exchange good, sound advice when asked, not how to flout or get around issues that may, for example, fall under law. Professionalism and most certainly courtesy doesn't end at the keyboard.

The forum will not become an arena for flamin - that's against the rules members signed up to.
