Having a headache I think!

I agreed to help out a band at a wedding next Saturday. Mainly because they have no lighting so I agreed to provide lights and will muck in with the DJing with another DJ.

First headache - got a call yesterday to ask if I knew of a singer as the one that was due to sing couldn't make it (the band are instrumental and use singers from other bands). Four days before the event, not a lot of chance.

Second headache - the saxophonist is on holiday and gets back Friday but they can't contact him and are not sure if he can make it.

Third headache - the band finish at 11.30 and said they are going to pack up and go home. The wedding finishes at 1pm but the B&G have asked if I can leave my lights there as they want to go on until 3pm using an Ipod through the sound system which the band have agreed to leave there. They said they would pack up the lights for me and deliver them to my home "later". A kind gesture but I don't think I like the idea of my lights being left in charge with and packed away by someone I don't know. Have agreed an extra fee for me to stay until 3pm but not happy at the thought of not getting home until 5pm by the time I have packed away and traveled home.

Strangely the wedding is a very posh affair with a large marquee in the grounds of a very large family house (one with a north and south wing). I hate letting people down but am on the verge of saying I can't make it as it all seems a bit of a disaster. On the other hand, events that you dread can turn out a lot better than expected.

My 'weekend' is half done:

Tues - Wedding for 200. Bar staff sold 5 alcoholic drinks all night & no they didn't bring their own - all Christians and floor was packed from start to finish smile icon

Thurs - Toastmaster & Disco in same venue only this time for about 70 so it looked a little empty. Different music too but a good night.

Fri - Ceremony & Disco so early start

Sat - Disco + Karaoke on Woodyo's territory :aa

I'm not DJ'ing yet, but I thought I'd add my bit anyway!

I went to my god-sons wedding reception take 2. He got married up in Dundee last weekend, and this weekend his parents put on 'a bit of a do' for him and his new wife, down here.

I won't name the disco, but he had a CD set-up, pair of well-worn Peavey's on stands and a few lights, and he charged £100. His disco name also mentioned that he does karaoke. The rig looked like it has been in use for many years, and to be fair, I don't think anyone was complaining about the service that he provided.

All I know is this: I intend to be aiming a bit higher, and charging for it! Each to their own, as they say.

My god-sons mum did tell me that she left it a bit late when booking a disco, and he was the only one she could get. Funny how the guy for £100 was available, but the ones charging £200 were already booked.

Maybe that backs up something I said on another thread.

Did my next to last mobile gig, a wedding for upmarket punters. Tried something new by buying a couple of packets of chocolates in wrappers(like quality street) and handed out one to each guest a long with small strips of paper. Asked guests to write something pleasant to the bride and groom on the strips of paper, eat the chocolate and wrap the strip of paper in the chocolate wrapper.Collected them all in and presented them to the bride with instructions not to open them until her 1st wedding anniversary. Worked a treat ! Music wise it was a lot of 60 plus who wanted rock n roll 50s style and a lot of mid 20s who wanted dance \trance. Stopped the music after a half an hour and explained the situation to everyone present and said that i would play 15 minute sets of each kind of music requested. They thought it was a good idea and the night went well. Norwegian prices i know but i took 650 quid (50 added on to cover chocolates) and got a 50 quid tip. Gear used was 2 lem speakers,2 pioneer djcd100s, pioneer mixer and 2 virtual flame lights thats it. Set up in 15 minutes , packed away and gone 20 minutes after finishing. So now its time for a holiday and its back to blighty on tuesday ! See you sw boys on the 25th. !

I will try anything,once!

Have a good holiday Chris.

My dreaded gig last night is now done and was interesting. The band were good but didn't really play dancey music. Felt sorry for them in a way because the guests ignored them and they were a bit deflated. Bit like a DJ who has a bad gig and can't get anyone to dance. The floored filled in between sets for the disco which didn't make them feel any better. When they finished at 11.30, I played a few tracks then was told to put the Ipod on.

How incredibly frustrating it was! Had a constant stream of requests but was told not to touch the ipod until it was finished. I had a look and there were 71 tracks on it. Parents of the bride were not happy because they wanted some "older" music to get the older people up but I said sorry, Ipod playing, been told I'm not allowed to touch it.

I did give in to pressure a couple of times and paused the Ipod and slipped in a couple of popular requests. First time I got caught and the Ipod owner steamed over and asked what I was doing. Said I had lots of requests for the track (which happened to be Atomic by Blondie?) and she went away. Next couple of times I got away with it.

I really think Ipods are an awful idea. It was full of one persons favourite tracks, there were gaps between the tracks and a real mix of Genre/tempo. About half the guests left once the Ipod was put on but I don't know if they were leaving at that time anyway. The lack of quality of music from the Ipod compared to the decks/laptop was also noticeable.

One of the main reasons for me being there was to do the lighting which went very well and was told by a few people including the brides dad that the lights looked good. I don't have top class lights and was a bit worried if they would be good enough but on the night they were fine.

There was a large mirror ball with three pin spots pointing at it but the beam from the pinspots hardly reached the mirror ball. I pointed two Soundlab Venus lights at the ceiling to give a constant slow rotating white light effect. Pointed a Falcon at the mirror ball so that when the light pinched. it sent a shower of reflected light on the dance floor which looked pretty good. At the dance floor, I pointed two Datamoons and a Soundlab Vasto (the Vasto is there just to balance the weight on the T-bar). The bit in between the floor and ceiling I filled with two Scanners.

I had my own decks and mixer with me but the PA wasn't mine and didn't sound too bad. The speakers were Carlsbro Delta 15" powered by a Phonic amp. Only 400w per channel I believe but plenty loud enough.

Finished at around 2pm at the request of the brides mum and it was getting on for around 2.45pm by the time I packed my stuff away. On the way out, I picked up two Damsels in distress from the wedding who couldn't get a taxi back to their B&B about 5 miles away. As it was on my way home, I gave them a lift and got home at about 4am this morning just as daylight was breaking.

Did my Christening gig today.

I was booked from 1.30pm - 3.30pm, basically there to entertain 50 kids with party dances and games etc. Set- up in a marquee.

Ended up with 6 kids in the marquee!! The rest of them were outside.

I just couldn't compete with a bouncy castle

But, the parents were happy, the kids we did entertain were very happy.
