External Soundcard...why?

Recommended Posts

Why do people recommend an external soundcard for pc dj'ing?

The internal pci card transfers 1056 megs per second whereas the usb devices that I have looked at seem to run at 12 megs per second. Have I been looking at the wrong things? I plan to use a dedicated pc for my disco, with an MP3 player as back-up. I'm not sure why external soundcards are prefered, so I must be missing something. Please 'enlighten me'!

Thanx

I used one for two reasons.

1) - the soundcard in my laptop sounded rubbish when put through a PA

2) - the soundcard I bought (Creative Soundblaster something or other) has outputs for front and rear speakers, so I have been able to configure OTSDJ to recognise this and send the ON AIR signal to the front speaker output, and the CUE output to the rear speaker output. By connecting these to two seperate channels on the mixer, I can preview the next song I am going to play. Which is nice...

Apart from the poor sound issue that my external s-card solves, it also offers me a mic connection and the flexibility to plug a 'pub house system' in and control it. I only pc dj and this s-card is first rate .......... http://www.absolutemusic.co.uk/shop/view_p...=410&page=1

Some laptops and pc's sound cards pick up the HD and power supply noise, it's not really a quality issue.

Ner ner ner ner... ner ner, ner can't touch this.

My biggest influence was Vera Lynn and I enjoy winding down with my cat - tabetha whilst listening to bing crosby playing on the gramophone.

I use an external soundcard on my laptop and to be honest i don't notice a lot of difference in sound quality compared to the onboard one - they both sound okay. The only advantage seems to be that it reduces some of the work the laptop has to do and I can run two programs at the same time where before, it used to cause a momentary stutter if I opened a second program while music was playing.

In answer to the question.

If using a desktop pc for dj-ing and you are prepared to spend the money on a good quality internal soundcard, then it would be no different to buying an external soundcard.

If using a laptop for dj-ing an internal soundcard would, most likely, not be adequate quality. Therefore, an external soundcard would be a much better option.

Thanks All

I will have a look around at prices. I'm planning to build a small-form pc for my disco and will consider both options. Maybe the external card would be better, in the event of the pc crashing, I would use the laptop as back-up, and then the external card would come into it's own.

Thanks again
