If you're looking at a good reliable supplier, then I can't speak highly enough of these people http://www.absolutemusic.co.uk/shop/brands...p;search=MACKIE I know Big Ben has used them also but he'd have to make his own comments on how good or bad they are. For me though, they can't be beaten. Hope this helps.

Hi, I've got Carlsbro gamma 15/400 active speakers so am in the market for a whole new system either speakers and amp or another set of active ones. another problem is I only have a ford mondeo so space is limited, there was a singer on last night with a carlsbro slammer set which was two satalite speakers and a powered sub that also powers the speakers, i like the idea of the way that was set up but I wouldnt touch Carlsbro gear again. if anyone knows of anything similar to these then I'd be willing to look at them.

As far as the problems with my speakers go, Ive had them into 2 shops and they couldnt find anything wrong with them, the second shop said they re soldered all the bits on the amps boards and this sorted them for a short while but once again its started up. Hard to explain what happens but basically they start to distort even at low levels and then just cut out completly, this only happens on one side I've tried a different mixer and bought new speaker cables and it still happened so I know its none of them.

Another quick one....

This may sound stupid but aren's the srm450's only 12"? are they really big enough to use as a full range speaker? I would get a sub to go with them in time but at the minute i wasnt expecting to have to fork out in new speakers so cant really afford them

Ok...here we go.... a unbiased rating on the mackie SRM 450's and Mackie 1501 subs

I use 2 mackie 450's and 2 mackie subs

The sound in my opinion is probably one of the best you will hear from an active set up.

Their a very good sounding powerful speaker system, with a wide dispertion horn. They can be a little "toppy" and harsh at times...depending on your venue area and materials.

For example, they need a cut in top and middle (EQ) if used in a concrete floor or wide hard walls sort of area. They were initially desined for vocalists....with an "american" sound.....

However a good sound can be achieved with a little EQ.

In a wooden floor soft furnished room, they need very little EQ.

Even though a good sounding speaker in its own right, they improve immensly when used with the 1501 sub. or 2 x 1501 subs.

The sub's crossover is perfectly matched with the 450, thus giving a very good sound with lots of extra bass.

One sub will do for most typical venues 150/200 people average sized room, not massive.

coupled with 2 subs...... will achieve 1900 watts RMS of powerful bassy music thats brill sounding and hard to beat in the active market imo.

overheating problems as widely publised seem to have been sorted. I've had my mackies over a year now, and never ever overheated.

one of the well known set up faults, is having the speakers backed right up to a wall....therefore not allowing the heatsink to breath on the rear. I always back mine off a few inces for an air flow

Also never use them past the 12'oclock gain position on the rear settings.

you wont go far wrong with a mackie set up, it gives you lots of choices....just 2 450's.....with one sub....with 2 subs....bla bla

I have never needed anything else at my gigs, and I do a large venue that can hold 350 people full

So thats my opinion on the mackies

I have heard better systems, dont get me wrong, but like anything else....you have to fork out thousandssssss of pounds for a very top quality set up.......mackies are so reliable, I wouldnt hesitate to buy second hand off ebay.

If they sound good and look good, their working fine and worth the money.

The subs are heavey, can be lifted by one person, but not for long!!

Passive subs are not as heavey. Infact just the amp section on the back of the subs weighs a lot when taken out.....

The amplifier section can be removed very easily for maintainence or repair if needed.

hope that helps in ya choice??

I'm in love with martin audio now, but still love the mackies haha

Thank you for the very details reply it was very helpful, the worry I've got is I dont think I've got the space for a sub so would the 450's on their own give off enough bass for say 100-150 people?

spent all of today looking around on tinternet and still not got a clue what I'm gonna do so all your help is highly appreciated.

HK Audio Soundhouse, HK Audio Lucas etc., DAP Audio Soundmate ( inspired by HK ), Prolight have just brought out a similar system, LEM, Peavey etc. all have similar packages.

There really are lots to choose from.

DAP Audio Soundmate ( inspired by HK

These were my first speakers

bought them from a shop that was really banging them out cheap..........so i thought!!!

turned out later that i got ripped off.........anyway they were really good to be honest, but lacked the bass and "rocking sound" that we sometimes need!

changed them for the mackies

In answer to your question about 100/150 people

yes just the two 450's would do, but you will be driving them quite hard with 150 people depending on the type of event

If you want them to "rock" you really do need a sub i think for 150 people or medium venue

The sub does take alot of the low freq work away from the 450's, therefore giving you a whole lot more power and clarity

The DAP Audio Soundmate 1 is a copy of ( I believe) the HK Audio Lucas 600 and consists of a 300 watt powered bass bin unit which also houses a 2 x 150 watt mid/top amp, plus 2 satellite speakers. Whilst it may be a bit harsh at the top end, it shouldn't lack bass.

at the end of the day its only a 300 watt bass bin coupled with 2 8inch tops..... hence why it was lacking bass and power in a medium venue, just not powerful enough. yes they were a copy of the hk , but nowhere near as good quality as hk tbh

cheap drivers i believe

going to get told off here but maybe you should consider some Bose L1's small to fit in your car.. sound good with 4 x B1's and dead easy to lug about all by your self...

yes i know its a lot of money but they are well worth it... and whats more when you give up and sell them you will get most of your money back

Right what does everyone think of the adlib aa151's with a 1000 watt amp (probably sound lab) untill i can get a bit more cash for a c-mark or better? the lot for £1180.

I know thats quite a lot more than I was lookin at spendin on the makies but i'd be more confident with a 15" driver opposed to a 12".

Been dealing with Ultimate sound in Liverpool and highly reccomend them to anyone, they have been really helpful even though I wont be buying the actual speakers from them if I go ahead with the adlibs.

Have a chat with Clive from http://www.entertainment-house.com/ he won't sell you short. He has twice talked me out of spending money when I didn't need to, even though he lost the business because of it.

Tell him your needs and your budget and ask him what he recommends. You don't need to go with his advice, but it is probably worth a phone call.

I'm sure you're right there. The HK units use B&C components. Slight difference.

managed to finish work a bit early yesterday so went to have a listen to a few, looked at the new wharfdales, jbl eons, a new set from mcgreggor (two subs and two satalites) they were really small and tidy lookin and sounded quite good but i just couldnt get over the fear of them being so small. was really pushed towards the adlibs the clarity from them was amazing but so was the price and weight, I dont wanna feel like I've wasted my money after a couple of months and everyone I speak to who has had adlibs cant say a bad thing about them. If anyones interested they can be seen at www.adlibaudio.co.uk its the aa151's. Let me know your honest oppinions.

Agreed....Clive is one seriously helpful and knowledgable guy....being a DJ himself, he probably tests all/any variations in set up himself!

It helps that he's a genuine kind of bloke....shop's in a nice area as well

(Clive...where's my gift voucher....) tongue out icon
