Well it was a strange gig tonight. First pub gig I've done for ages but it was for the daughter of the one of the owners of the pub. Very strange set up. We were in a bit of the restaurant where they had cleared the tables and was squashed into a little alcove at the side. This is a pretty poor photo from my mobile:

Person in the picture is my nephew.

The buffet and tables were set out in a conservatory across the back and outside there was a beer a garden.

Guess where most of the guests were! In the beer garden. Played to an empty floor for most of the night. To get people to come in, they moved the cake into the restaurant area and got everyone in for the cutting of the cake. A handful stayed afterward to dance for the last hour.

My efforts were not in vain as I got complimented on the music but they preferred to sit outside in the fresh air (and no doubt have a smoke).

Reason for last minute booking (yesterday) was that the lady who does the quizzes at the pub said she would do the music. They suddenly found out she had gone on holiday and wouldn't be there.

My gig last night was about 40 miles away in deepest Cornwall.

When first approached I did not fancy the gig so I quoted what for me was an outrageous amount expecting a polite refusal, I was horrified when they accepted.

I had already visited the venue prior to the gig to ensure I knew what was what, where I was to set up, when I could have access, power supplies and if I could use the hazer as the B&G had specifically requested I use my lasers. I was told I was to be in the attached Marquee, access from 5.30 and smoke/haze would be okay in there, the band? would be setting up at one end of the main room. Turns out that I was only required from 7.30pm to 10pm with the buffet at 08.45pm

Now reality sets in!

Arrive at 5.35, took all the gear into the marquee, start setting up, at about 6pm venue manager (nice chap) turns up (I am halfway set up by now) "Um, we have a problem", "what's that then says's I", he replied "the band have just turned up, there is not enough room for them to set up in the main building and they say there are not enough plug sockets, can you move so they can go in here", well I was a little disappointed as I thought I would be able to make a swift exit once the band started as there was a rear exit from the marquee avoiding the guests. So I stripped down far enough to move the kit safely and set up again in the main room.

Started playing background music from just after 7pm, the B&G had supplied a list of about 100 songs, so took all the music for the evening from this, although from the first dance (9.25) they wanted specific songs with some Dance/Trance music (hence the lasers).

1st dance: Let's Stay Together

2nd dance: Sex Machine

I Don't Feel Like dancing

Rock DJ

Paris to Berlin

As The Rush Comes

Tomorrow never Comes

Dark Side Of Moon

Rhythm Is A Dancer

After The Meteor (last track) finished at 10.02pm

From about 8pm the dance floor was very busy all night, used one Bose L1 with an A1 and 4 B1s (plenty of bass), the manager agreed that i could use the hazer and the lasers were amazing (better than I expected) only used them for the last six tracks of the night. gave out over a 100 glow stick bracelets (good job I only paid 4p each for them).

Bride and Groom were gushing with compliments, brides father talked the hotel into offering me some work (got to check some dates now) had loads of compliments from the guests and was back home just after midnight. Just wish they were all this easy.

Two weddings for me this weekend.

Friday night at Post Office social Club in Reading, absolute disaster.

Arrived to find a dozen people sat there drinking (they had been there all afternoon drinking) and about 20 young kids running riot around the hall. I set up and started the disco but the kids continued to run around the whole evening (even during the first dance). The numbers increased to about 50 during the evening in a hall that holds 200. I could not get the party going despite playing all there requests and trying every sort of music I could think of. I find that adults just do not want to dance when lots of kids are running around in fear of bumping into one of them. I don't do kids parties as I just don't enjoy them and to be honest the couple would have been better off with some form of childrens entertainer than a DJ.

Saturday night was at The Forbury Hotel in Reading and was a completely different ball game. The evening started badly by the main group being behind with food and speeches by about an hour and then when I did start the Brides grandmother was taken ill and I had to stop while paramedics attended and took her away (I hope she is okay). People seemed a bit stunned for the next 30 minutes but after that the dancefloor filled and it turned into a blinder of a night. I know the group well from previous weddings and functions I have done for them and it really is a pleasure to do discos for such nice people. It was a pity to have to finish.

Highlight of the night was a packed (75+), bouncing dancefloor singing I Predict a riot at the top of there voices as if there lives depended on it.

Well, friday was good. I was doing a new venue in town and played a whole mixed bag of requests including Indie, Dance and Retro with some RnB in there too. Great turnout, good atmosphere too. All in all a good night.

Saturday, well I was running around like a headless chicken all day and feel knackered today. I set up my a wedding I was doing which was a real pain in the you know what. The grooms band were playing a set of rock covers and we had arranged that they were going to set up in front of me. When I got to the venue at 2pm as agreed, their gear was taking up the whole stage. The couple were getting married at 3pm and then coming straight to the venue so i got a but stressed. Nothing too bad though and a quick call to the groom sorted it. He came down with the rest of the band and they moved their stuff forward a bit so I could get round them.

Set up as quick as I could in the cramped space. Just finished setting up when I had a call from someone who had been let down by a DJ and asked if I could provide someone. Made a call and got someone but they were doing their day job until 5pm so I had to get home, get another rig and go and set up for them. I also had to tell the venue that I would have to come back today to get the stuff. Everything went well as far as I know. Then I just had enough time for a shower before loaded the van again with some decks and speakers for a hire at my local pub and then off to the wedding. Things running late so I got to see the band do their thing and they were stunning. I then played a mix of Rock, Indie, 60s and Irish stuff (they had loads of Irish relatives there). My mate was also providing the mobile bar and it was a good one so I got a healthy 10% fee from that.

A few drunken idiots during the night. Someone (for the second week actually) asking if he could sing over my microphone. When I said no he called me all kinds of stuff. The reason I said no was because I let someone do it a while back and they swung it around and slammed it to the floor and I didn't have a back up at the time so I was pretty stuffed afterwards. I said back then that i wouldn't let anyone do it again. He was a stroppy little bloke so I just laughed at him and watched him fall on his backside on the dancefloor when he couldn't take the pace anymore. He left about an hour before the end.

Overall a good weekend. Totally knackered now and need a visit to the pub later I think for sunday lunch and a few pints.

Tested out my lasers and a couple of new lights last night (purchased with my winnings from last week) and added them to a couple of my dynamo scanners. They looked great and well worth the money.

Cheers

Gary
