Paul Smith 0
Want to know what Cheesy Phil can do better than Irene Cara? - You'd better read on then ...... 1. What is your DJU Forum Alias? Cheesy Phil 2. What is your Real Name, Age, Location & Marital Status? Phil Langston' married, 7 kids, 7 grandchildren, 2 pending 45 years old 3. What is the Name of your Disco? Anthems Disco 4. How long have you been a DJ? On and off 25 years or so 5. What inspired you to become a DJ? I longed to have people throwing themselves at my feet to the sound of throbbing music..........and I can't sing, BUT playing the rowboat song has nearly the same effect. 6. Are you a Full/Part Time DJ? If part time what else do you do? Plumber by day, dancer by night...bit like Irene Kara from Flashdance, (except I'm possibly a better welder) 7. What is your favourite type of function now? (eg: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc) Anything where I can set up my stall and see people enjoy themselves, I love playing and mixing the latest club sounds but I also love the old classics as well 8. What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience? Huge gap between worst and most embarrassing. I've done loads of bad stuff but nothing embarrasses me,.... I've always done what's felt right on the night. 9. If you could go back to the beginning of your DJ career is there anything that you'd do differently? (eg: The gear that you bought, the way you promoted/advertised yourself) I think I would have bought speaker stands, lighting stands and deck stands before charging my first customer £159 for his wedding. 10. What do you feel you offer the public that convinces them to book you rather than "the next guy/girl"? Jeez, sense of humour, good music, exceptionally cheesy dancing. I just love what I do and I never miss an opportunity to show it! 11. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn't? and why? Never, ....no regrets, buy it use it bin it, but don't look back in anger I heard you say.................................. 12. What's your next DJ purchase likely to be? Bigger van so I can start looking at getting more gear 13. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be? A complete folding package that weighed less than 25 kilos and projected light and sound at 1500 watts apiece. 14. What was the worst equipment failure suffered during a gig? Me at 5 o clock in the morning freestyling on the mike to seven married women at a Naval senior rates Summer ball. Guilty of using language unbecoming of a professional dj, they acting in a manner unfit etc. etc. and being banned thereafter. 15. What do you think is the best thing about DJing? The buzz from the crowd, the feeling that everyone is having a great time....and it's all your fault 16. What do you think is the worst thing about DJing? Bunny boilers !!!!!!!! you've been there guys 17. What would make you stop DJing (if anything)? Nuclear Warfare 18. How do you think DJing will change, in the next 5 years? Rigs will become more compact, women will complain about the size of equipment 19. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig? Should have played more Hed Kandi 20. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ? Never play too loudly 21. And worst advice you were ever given? Never play too loudly 22. How do you keep up to date with music? (eg Promo monthly CDs, Downloads, Purchase from retailer) All the above and scanning national and local radio 23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill the dance floor for you! Billy Ocean-Red light spells danger, Eric Prydz-Call on me, Phyllis Nelson- Move Closer for the last lager waltz. 24. One piece of advice you'd give to someone just starting out. Just be yourself, go with your instincts, Know music, Love people! 25. What medium format do you mainly use eg vinyl, CD, hard-drive? Mainly cd but slowly breaking into the hard drive medium via Mixmeister 26. Have you embraced/adapted any ideas that you've read about on DJU - if so what? Still only been here a couple of weeks but you never stop learning in this game and this appears to be the source of all knowledge 27. What is your best gig ever and your worst? Had one night when even the cheese failed...no-one danced all night. The guy that hired us said it was one of the best disco's he'd seen. Had so many good ones, all memorable for diffrerent reasons (mostly unprintable in open forum) 28. Apart from 'Word of Mouth' what is your main (most successful) form of advertising your disco? That's it really 29. Are you a member of a DJ Association / Union? No 30. How many gigs do you do a year, how many would you like to do? 30 or so. 31. What is your average charge for a booking? Anywhere from 100 - 250 32. How many tracks do you have in your music collection? 5-6000 33. Have you ever had someone try to claim off you? (eg: Public Liability Insurance or other such legal action) Heaven forbid 34. What is your favourite music genre? Trance, but all genres do it for me
