Ultra Violet Lights....older Djs.

Recommended Posts

Just reminiscing to myself as I was driving along the other day.Is my memory playing a trick on me or inthe seventies didnt any self-respecting DJ unit or venue have the dancers bathed in Ultra Violet light.....U know the type that makes your shirt and teeth look brill.

Did they just go out of fashion or did some Government ban them cos they were so good.Anybody still use them??Know where I can get some units??Play a lot of Retro Stuff and think it would put the icing on the cake.Don't say it would look dated....Thats what I want!!

I did have some but discovered through a bit of market research (asking people what they thought of the lights) that women hate them. They find them humiliating and degrading. Consequently I stopped using them.

Not so strangely, men like them.

Still got some in me garage, One old set of tubes and other is a pair of cannons from ebay,

Used to use them at certain parties, Used to make me smile seeing everyones "markings" If ya no what i mean.

never had any complaints with using them,

Infact on a serious note, Most clubs/pubs in leicester and nottingham have them in use not only in the bars but also the toilets, Imagine what white substance glows up!

Just search ebay for UV cannon the 400w units are very good and will fill any room. The make wedding table setups look very nice.

Yep they are still used.

Don't use the 400W UV cannon - I had a lamp explode showering the dancefloor with glass last year.

I had a 250w ELC lamp blow with such force last week, that it smashed the lense of the effect it was in. Should I recomend that everyone doesn't use any effects that use these?

I use a pair of 4' tubes, but I think there is a benefit in turning them off occasionally.

For kids' and teenagers' parties, leave I them on all the time, but for an older age group maybe just put them on for half hour periods later on in the evening, particularly if there's a busy dancefloor.

Be careful in these days of political correctness because someone might question your motives for using UV lights where children are present.

I see your point entirely, but I would explain to the complainant in no uncertain terms that "I run a disco, for goodness' sake!!".

I will resist any attempts by anyone to apply that degree of ridiculous political incorrectness on me - that would be pushing the PC point well past the bounds of what can be considered reasonable.

I have never in... (does quick count on appendages) 27 years of this lark had any complaints or insinuations about the unsuitability of UV lighting by anyone.

Out of interest, have any of you lot?

They often do this so that druggies can't find their viens. You will find them in alot of public toilets and i think most train station loos are now using them.

Out of all the clubs i frequent, not one of them doesn't use UV light. I think that it can help to create a nice atmosphere. It's also handy in clubs for adding a bit of light where you need it, without flooding boring white light everywhere!

Steve, there is a difference between a lamp inside an effect going pop and one of these uv cannons - the lamp on the uv cannon is exposed to the world, not behind a lens. Also, I believe there was a cheap batch of 400W uv lamps that are known to go bang. I have not heard of an ELC doing the same unless the lamp had been contaminated by greasy fingerprints...

Tell people what you want, I just thought you may want to make an informed decision on the 400W UV cannons.

It smashed through the lens & showered me with glass & no it hadn't been touched by fingers, greasy or otherwise. It just seems like a bit of scaremongering over a dodgy lamp. Light bulbs blow every day, some just go pop & some with a ****ing great bang that showers anyone unfortunate enough to be in the firing line with glass.

Strip UVs cover a much wider area than cannons anyway.

Danger....Danger PC alert.

Now that we know of the risk of bulbs exploding we should now all do a risk assessment of the likely hood of injury to ourselves or others.

Over the top or just being prudent?

Never had any complaints...in fact I always put the UV on, even in small venues where I don't use a lot of lights, the UV is indispensable.

Got me worried about these bulbs blowing up though...never happened to me (touch wood). Whats the theory behind them blowing up???

Agreed. The same way I use them (if I'm bothered to set them up)
