I first promised my wife I would retire then DJing when I was thirty (1997) then new years eve 1999, then when I am 40 (very very soon), maybe 45.

Anyway, either way, maybe rather than playing my last gig at 45 or 50 and fixing a final date , I might instead one night during a gig think; I've had enough of this now, this is it.

Anyone else thought about how they will end it?

I made the decision to finish in the uk, but then obviously moving to greece to pursue and annoy everyone out there instead.

I friend of mine hwo DJ's is still going strong at the ripe old age of 72!

Still lifts all his kit about and has a really good following.

Think ill finish when when im 50

(well thats the plan anyway)

I think the problem is that Djing is like good bottle of red wine, it improves with age.

I also know some 'old timers' who are in their 60's and are decent DJ's although they struggle to keep up to date!

I know a DJ who is 66, and he is very popular.

As for me retiring, who knows? I'd rather quit my day job and then DJ full time if I could.

I'm 45 going on 15........so ive no plans to finish.

Probably when i dont get the butterflies and nerves just before a gig, then i'll think about it.

I still really enjoy it and keep well up to date with all my funky house, charts, new music etc.

One guy i know in Greenock, says he'll die behind the decks, sometimes i do that every weekend

Arf Arf !!!!!!!

When I stop enjoying it, when I become rich enough, when I can't move the kit by myself any more, whichever comes first.

Actually the rich enough option would only be semi-retirement, I'd still want to do selective gigs & carry on running the company.

I've retired twice in the past for various reasons, but am currently quite enjoying it all once more, probably unlike my audiences!

I don't have any plans of when I'll finish;

If for some reason I can't get the gear about, or I suffer ill health, I will be forced to stop.

Please tell me why I should ever even think of retiring in this industry?

Cos you got £50 million in bank?

I think there is no limit...especially as more and more 'old' people are having 60ths, 70ths, 80ths etc.

There may come a time when you are too young to come into the business, as people who in 10 years time will be celebrating, say, 18ths no longer want a mobile, but use ipods (or whatever the new technology will be then)....and the 'old' people won't want a young dj!

It seems to me at least that music most popular for mobile functions (eg weddings/ anniversaries) is rooted between 1959 and 1999 (with exceptions of course)...and as people who grew up with that music 'age', then their choice of dj will lean towards the more 'mature' dj.

If you get what I mean

You should start thinking about it when you are unable to renew, are no longer fresh and have passed your sell by date. Not being a grumpy old man just a fact., there are far too mant djs who should have stopped years ago. I am sure brian that you however have some years left in you yet !

Oh I do hope so. smile icon

Good point, though, about DJs of my age and older having grown up with the music most often played.

Yep, I`ll agree with that one. There are also to many DJ`s that shouldn`t have started never mind stopped years ago.

i think it's up to each individual DJ wether he feels he can no longer carry gear, keep up with the music. or get the buzz anymore.

Tong,Cox,Jules etc aren't exactly spring chickens but seem to still make a living as well respected DJ's

Theirs an old fella in Scotland who's 66 and still going strong as well as the 50+ brigade about my area who can still keep up with us young things lol.

Personally my hearing in one ear is my only disadvantage , but i'm sure its all downhill from here on in.

Again i feel it's up to each individual to make the decision rather than the financial gain and tarnishing the trade with "by their sell by date" DJ's
