otronics 0
This could just be me but is a 'DJ perception' issue. If I go to an event, I 'expect' the DJ to have a van to carry gear. If they do not, I do not get such a high impression, or at least not when I think about the issue anyway. A car/people mover is not as good as a van...........however if you have a reliable vehicle who cares? Its the DJ that counts and experience etc Maybe its just that guests will have cars...the DJ should be one up. I use a people mover but am the DJ and I think that is fine. What do you think? Maybe I have a weird gene somewhere comprising of this strange but not really big issue! This could be my weirdest post yet. Most people seem to assume that you have a van. When I was loading up at the end of the event last week one of the venue staff asked where I had parked the van. I said the car was parked outside and she couldn't believe that I got everything in a car. Its only a little Peugeot 106sw (estate) and to a certain extent it dictates what gear I buy as it has to fit in.

jamminroadshow 0
I think a van does make the right impression. If you turn up in a small car people might think that you are a bit of a cowboy a bit like the guy that comes to fix you sky turns up in a old sierra. One thing i will say though is that you sell yourself so if you are good then the car does not matter by the end of the night but does not give a great first impression

Dream Catchers 0
When I first started out (late 70's) I didn't drive and used to get mates to give me lifts, anything from a car to an escort van, somehow managed to get my kit into it. The kit then was 2 2x12H speakers, a deck that was 4 1/2 long, 3 2x2 screens, 2 5' FAL light boxes, 2 3' FAL light boxes, 3 600 7" record cases, 4 50 12" record cases, amp, light unit and loads of leads. On some gigs I took my video projector and screen but they were always taken in a van due to the size (they were monsters then LOL). I honestley don't know how I used to do it. I now have a Renault Trafic SWB and it is loaded to the hilt  Jim

aaadisco 0
I use a Suzuki Carry van, it's only a 1.3L but has loads of room as the engine is under the seats so most of the van is space. Also faily cheap to run and insure. When I started, I thought about getting a trailer but I thought that a van would appear more professional. Secret Disco 0
I use an Isuzu Trooper ,but have a 4 wheel "Loadlugger" trailer with sliding back door and metal ramp as most of my stuff is on wheels. This of course dosent help if your gig is 3 floors up.
NRG Roadshow 0
I cant see its really a problem what you use as long as it gets you their when you need to be their, and you can fit all your gear in it. Most of the time you park at the rear of the venue so not many people see your wheels anyway. Im currently using a car and large size box trailer, does the job fine but maybe does look a bit pikeyish turning up towing a trailer. Am looking at going down the people carrier route as I think I can slim down the ammount of gear I carry and get it into something like a ford Galaxy with the rear seats out. Otronics - What People Carrier do you use, Im just looking at various options at the minute but I like the Ford Galaxy to be honest, I do like the Vauxall Zafera too, but not sure its big enough to get all my kit in. Norfolk DJ 0
Zafira is ok for a small/medium rig. No good for a large show. If you go for a Zafira don't buy a 1.6 as it's underpowered with a full load.

You've got it - I use the Ford Galaxy. It must have been updated since as we have a model from around 2001/2002. Excellent vehicle and ideal for disco work as you can totally remove all 5 of the back seats thus generating lots of space for gear. You can also just fold them up (ie/ fold the backs down) if you don't need as much space. Engine not too noisey either although I like engines to make noise! Norfolk DJ 0
Another cheap option is the Kia Sedona. Loads of space, low prices, good reliability. Sliding rear door, makes it handy in car parks or getting awkward items out of the back.
4zzz 0
Have a company drive car from real job. Which is great but I dont drive the same car every day which can be hard sometimes. We have a fleet of five Saab 93 of which one is a combi wagon which I try to grab most Fri nights. Can just about get everything into it. The sedan is a tighter squeeze with seats down. Still running costs are the best around.

Hmmm.....yea I have seen those, well from the outside anyway, very similar looking to the Chrysler Voyager but much cheaper I should imagine, Im no brand whore but would be pretty wary about buying anything with a KIA badge, arent they made by 12 year old kids in Korea? Otronics - So the Ford Galaxy is your disco wheels, I reckon one would suit my needs just about spot on, I wouldnt be looking at anything much newer than yours, they still get good money second hand. Their is a local garage which has a 2001 2.3 Petrol Galaxy for £6500, but then it has only done 58,000 with FSH, so is probably a good buy, other than I wanted a diesel as I reckon a 2.3 might be a bit thirsty. What engine size/type do you have, and other than it not making enough noise for your liking, how do you find it on the fuel drinking calculations? But in all honesty I still prefer the Grand Voyager to any other people carrier, they really are the dogs wotsits of all people waggons.... Has anyone on here ever owned one? The big thing puting me off buying one is I have a feeling that you would be talking telephone numbers in costs for a major repair if anything serious ever went wrong. And even silly prices for little things....... Edited September 9, 2007 by Norfolk DJ

Yes, they are made in Korea, but are so like the voyager is because both are actually made by General Motors. Most people don't realise the engine is a Mercedes type 3 Euro.. If you want a recommendation for 5 years running they were the best selling MPV in the UK. But try to get a second-hand one other than from a dealership where it was part-exed for a newer one. Almost impossible. A friend bought a Voyager a couple of weeks before I bought my Sedona (2.9) and tried mine on a test drive. He said he wished he hadn't spent the extra money. I have driven both and highly rate the Kia Sedona. Kia are a decent make now and make some good cars. Great value and loads of space, just buy the diesel version. Drove the grand voyager in the US a couple of years ago and not no more than 20 mpg. Safety kit was sparse as well.
NRG Roadshow 0
Well thats given me some food for thought.... Might take a look at a Sedona then, thats if I can find one.......are they not rarer than something that you wouldn't see coming out of a rocking horse very often? I think the 2.9 would be a little out of pricerange regarding the fuel consumption but I reckon they gotta be worth a look. I have only ever seen one from the outside, so it might be time I delved a little deeper and had a look inside. EDIT - Just been looking on Ebay, Didnt realise it was a 2.9 Diesel, I thought you was talking about a 2.9 Petrol.....in which case the 2.9 Diesel might be a little more affordable........Any ideas on fuel Consumption anyone? robbiedj 0
I get 26-29 mpg on a run. Obviously less if you are in rush hour jams, though. Another point, the towing rate is 2 ton, so heavy loads are no problem. You want me to play what? NRG Roadshow 0
Your talking about the Sedona I presume Robbie? 26-29 on a run!!! I rest my case, I would say thats thirsty, as round town your probably looking at getting about 20mpg.......oh dear thats bad. I aint fussed about the towing aspect, as the whole point of me getting one of these beasts is so that I can get rid of my trailer and not have to tow at all.
