Dj's United

Knockout ! - It's Another Djs United Competition

Recommended Posts

This question will finish in 12 hours... and the next question will start after that.

Last call for this question...

Correct answers received from most, but not all of those still in the quiz.

The POST ON/OFF switch is found on all 4 of Denons current DJ mixers; The DN-X500, DN-X900, DN-X1500 and DN-X1500S.

The Post On/Off switch, when ON allows the microphone signals (from both mics) to pass to all Outputs - eg: Master Out XLR Balanced sockets, Master Out Phono/RCA/Unbalanced, Record Out, Booth Out, Zone Out, Digital Out (where applicable) etc... With the Post Switch switched OFF - the mic signals are only routed through the main outputs.

This feature can be useful if you've got multiple speakers and amps (or powered speakers) in different rooms, or the venues gardens etc as well as the Main Dance Floor area. After all, at a Wedding for example - you may want a mic announcement such as "The photographer would like all members of the Brides family for the next photograph, which is by the fountain..."etc to go out to ALL areas that you have speakers set up, but announcements such as "Grace" or the speeches, to be heard in the main room.

Those DJU members who got this right, abd go on to the next question (which will be announced later) are:

Buskersball

DJ Marky Mark

Jimbo 57

Kenny Wisdom

Mattaious

Revelation Roadshow

Tonsk

...and here's the next Question, it's open to:

Buskersball

DJ Marky Mark

Jimbo 57

Kenny Wisdom

Mattaious

Revelation Roadshow

Tonsk

Ejecting a CD whilst it's playing can be pretty embarrassing...the song that everyone was dancing to stops, the silence that follows is replaced a fraction of a second later by cat-calls from the ex-dancing audience - the CD loads back into the CD-deck and cues back up...taking a mere 40 years (or so it feels...) bathed in the glow coming off of your cheeks... the song restarts from the very beginning, playing to about half the number of party-goers than before.

To combat this, all Denon CD-decks (and later, a few other makes) have an Anti-Eject System, whereby you can only eject the compact disc when it isnt actually playing.

However, it can be just as embarrassing to accidently change the track selection whilst a track is playing - eg: You're playing Track 4 from the CD, and you accidently nudge the Track selection controls and Track 5 starts playing instead.

Question:

What is the name of the feature on Denon CD-Decks (such as the DN-S1000, DN-S3500 etc) which prevents accidental track changes whilst the CD is playing?

As always - Answers by PM please.

Ok, the week has passed, the 7 DJU members who have made it this far into the competition have all submitted their answers...

The question was:

What is the name of the feature on Denon CD-Decks (such as the DN-S1000, DN-S3500 etc) which prevents accidental track changes whilst the CD is playing?

The answer was Play Lock....(and I was accepting "Single Play Lock" Too)

So, Yes, while many DJ CD-Decks will indeed stop you from accidently ejecting a CD that is currently playing - Denon CD-Decks will also prevent you from accidently changing tracks, when a track is playing. (You need to intentionally press CUE (stop) first of all. The feature can be switched on and off by the DJ, so that if you've got some clever mixing trick up your sleeve which REQUIRES you to switch tracks very quickly, then the option's there.

Now then...The great BPM show is almost upon us... (that might have even have been a hint...but not because of the name...)

This weeks question is open to the remaining contestants:

Buskersball

DJ Marky Mark

Jimbo 57

Kenny Wisdom

Mattaious

Revelation Roadshow

Tonsk

And the question is...in two parts.

In DJ/Musician equipment terminology, what does MIDI stand for, and name three Denon DJ products which support MIDI.

Bear in mind that this question (luckily enough, or was it planned...?) doesnt close until several days after the BPM show...where Denon will have several new pieces of equipment...and other surprises... :ads:

...and then there were five...

Question 6 has now closed: We asked:

In DJ/Musician equipment terminology, what does MIDI stand for, and name three Denon DJ products which support MIDI.

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface.

Three devices in the Denon DJ range which now support MIDI are:

The DN-HC4500 - A dual CD-like controller ideal for connecting to laptops and PCs running most leading DJ software, for true DJ-like hands-on control - rather than double-clicking.

The DN-HD2500 - Yes, the best just got better - The latest free firmware upgrade which users can perform on the unit using simply a USB lead, or a Pendrive, now gives users all the 2500's familiar controls for use on most of the leading laptop and PC DJ software - the best of both worlds?

The DN-HS5500 - as seen at the BPM show in its prototype form - The DN-S5500 is a single tabletop unit combining some of the features found on the DN-S3500 single tabletop CD-deck, with some of the features found on the DN-HD2500 professional media controller.

So, congratulations to:

Buskersball

DJ Marky Mark

Kenny Wisdom

Mattaious

and...Tonsk

Who all named the 3 units, and got the MIDI acronym correct.

The next question will appear later on today.

The next question will appear later on today.

Sorry for the delay. I' still defrosting from The BPM Show.

Here's the next question:

The DN-D6000 is a rack mountable dual cd-deck, brimming with useful DJ features. The DN-D6000 is quite close to being 2 x DN-S1000 single tabletop cd-decks bolted together, but each side of the DN-D6000 offers an additional audio feature (per deck), not found on the DN-S1000.

Answers by PM to me please.

Also note, that as we are now in the final 5 contestants left in the competition, any member submitting an incorrect answer will be elidgable for a runners-up consellation prize.

Good Luck !!!

Phew! well, we've had correct answers from all five remaining contestants.

Buskersball

DJ Marky Mark

Kenny Wisdom

Mattaious

and...Tonsk

The DN-D6000 dual cd-deck is effectively 2 x DN-S1000 single cd-decks, but...with the DN-D6000 has a 15 second sampler on each deck - handy for christmas jingles as well as for music mixing purposes.

So...for our 5 remaining contestants, here's the next question:

Most of the products in the current Denon DJ range of professional DJ products have user-upgradable firmware. This means that new features and improvements to existing functions can be downloaded into the unit by yo, th owner/DJ, making your unit just as up-to-date as the same model purchased new from your local DJ shop at any given time.

The upgrade process takes just a couple of minutes and requires no tools or soldering or opening up the unit to swap computer chips over - its simply a case of loading a file into the Denon unit, via a CD, or vua USB socket.

Q) But...what was the first piece of Denon DJ equipment, available in the UK to offer user-upgradable firmware?

Answers by Private message to me, by Wed 28th Nov please.

Good Luck !

Time for another question ?

Indeed it is...

In the last question, it was asked:

"What was the first piece of Denon DJ equipment, available in the UK to offer user-upgradable firmware?"

Well, we had a couple of different answers from the members still in the knockout game...

Buskersball said that he thought it was the Denon DN-D9000 Dual CD-deck

DJ Marky Mark said that he thought it was the DN-D4000

Kenny Wisdom said that he thought it was the Denon DN-D9000 Dual CD-deck

Mattaious said that he thought it was the Denon DN-D9000 Dual CD-deck

and...Tonsk said that he thought it was the Denon DN-D9000 Dual CD-deck

Anyone see a pattern forming here?

The first piece of Denon DJ equipment, available in the UK to offer user-upgradable firmware - was the DN-D9000 dual CD-deck.

Farewell to Marky Mark in this quiz - he becomes our first runner up to get a consolation prize.

And...onto the next question...for which answers must be in by Tuesday evening of next week.

Here's the next question: -

You're looking at the display of a Denon DJ item. On the display, it says - "HL BOOST" - what is the purpose of this function AND name two Denon DJ products which could display this.

And then there were three....

The latest knockout quiz question asked:

"You're looking at the display of a Denon DJ item. On the display, it says - "HL BOOST" - what is the purpose of this function AND name two Denon DJ products which could display this?"

Well, HL Boost stands for High&Low Boost and is one of several settings on the Denon DN-X1500 and DN-X1500S (Silver) mixers. These mixers allow the DJ to adjust equaliser-like settings exclusively for their headphone/cueing out - so...if you like to hear more bass in your ears than your audience, or you love crispy high frequencies in your ears, but not on your dancefloor - the headphone equaliser options on the Denon DN-X1500 and 1500s mixers may be of interest.

Correct answers to this question were received from:

Buskersball, Kenny Wisdom, and Mattaious - who go through to the next round - and the question below.

Denon CD-decks often feature illuminated keys and even illuminated control surfaces on at least one future model. Such features obviously aid the DJ in the low light environments which we tend to frequent.

Which Denon DJ product earned the pre-release nick-name of "The Eclipse" due to a certain feature of its DJ friendly control illumination?

Answers by PM only please - by Wednesday of next week. (Oh, and no sneaky asking Denon Technical Support in the UK or US this time please - I've told both departments all the quiz questions....)

  • 2 weeks later...

Ah yes...another update.

The Question asked was:

Denon CD-decks often feature illuminated keys and even illuminated control surfaces on at least one future model. Such features obviously aid the DJ in the low light environments which we tend to frequent.

Which Denon DJ product earned the pre-release nick-name of "The Eclipse" due to a certain feature of its DJ friendly control illumination?

Answer: The Denon DN-D9000 dual CD-deck (due to the blue illumination behind the control platters).

The members who answered fully and correctly to the previous weeks question were: Buskersball, Kenny Wisdom, and Mattaious. Only 3 members still in the running.

I can confirm that 2 of the 3 remaining entrants did NOT get the answer correct.

...and the 3rd one didn't either.

So...No one got the last question right.

Time for a tie-breaker, and it's got a numeric answer...so...the person who guesses nearest to the correct answer wins.

Here's the question, PM answers by Sunday December 23rd...midnight.

Q:) I've been on a particular diet since June 2007, up until the first week of November 2007. In pounds (lbs) how much weight did I lose during that time?

  • 2 weeks later...

Is it spring yet? Hibernation over, and time for the results...can I have a drum roll please? followed by a Ham & Cheese Roll, and a Quick Roll with the Bar maid etc,etc....

I'll need the addresses of both Maticious and Buskersball, for their runners up prizes - and also the address of Kenny Wisdom, the lucky winner of DJs United Knockout Competition and the Denon DN-HP1000 headphones.

Kenny Wisdom guessed closest to the tie-breaker question, which asked for the closest guess of amount of weight that I lost between June and November 2007. I lost a much-overdue 125lb (9 Stone all-but-a-pound) during that time, and back on the same diet to get rid of another 2 stone, around the end of January (once all the yummy stuff is out of the house).

Congratulations to Kenny, and thanks to all who participated. I'm planning on running another knockout style competiton, and other competitions too, here on DJs United very soon.

All prizes will be sent out by post in the next 2 weeks.

Dear Gary,

I'm dead chuffed! Brilliant news for me, thanks!

I'd just like to say, apart from being the lucky winner, what a great competition it has been in terms of introducing me to the range of Denon DJ equipment available. I, like many others, must have poured over just about every manual available for each piece of kit which, whilst being a source of answers, has also been a great source of information and has certainly made me think about various features which I recognise are missing from my set-up and that will be something to take onboard for future upgrades.

At the moment your inbox is saying "full" so I'll PM my address later.

Thanks again!

PS That's an impressive weight loss. What diet is that?
