Cold As Ice - Foreigner

I actually played this (by accident) at a wedding reception. Fortunately, it was during the warm up part of the evening and was at quite low volume so no-one seemed to notice!

If you listen to the lyrics it's amazing how many tracks we actually play and are requested at weddings that are about break-ups etc. Love and Hurt are two of the strongest emotions.

Take "Happy Ending by Mika" for example, could have been a great track if he'd changed the lyrics, reminds me in a way of "Never Forget" for some reason.

Have a read through a typical wedding playlist and think about the lyrics for each song.

I've added a folder to OTS called 'Heartbreakers' as there are so many tracks we play that are exactly that, and I figured if I bung all the songs into that folder, then I won't play them at weddings.

In saying that, I agree that people don't listen too much for the words as my wife proved whe I was playing a CD of new tracks to familiarise myself with them.

As the song was playing, she said, "this one's really good, you should play it at the 25th Wedding Anniversary party on Saturday"

The song - "Don't love you no more" by Craig David!

I do tend to avoid playing "Every day I love you less and less" at weddings!

I think you are wrong to assume that a song may not be played at a wedding just because of it's theme and lyrics. In my book, the only songs worthy of vito are ones specifically requested by the wedding party which must not be played for whatever reason.

I agree with you both as far as most tracks are concerned (hence my earlier post about taking notice of what we currently play at weddings), but I do believe that you should not play any tracks with very bad language or those likely to cause offence. To my mind this would just be common decency.

this always goes down well with the 50 and 60 somthings... so dont cross it off your list...

like mr mole says.. never dismiss any track based on lyrics.... just use common sence and read the crowd..

a good example...

Originally thought to be about either angels, the government, or parents. The track was in fact written during the collapse of Sting's marriage to Frances Tomelty; the lyrics are the words of a sinister, controlling character, who is watching "every breath you take / every move you make".

“ I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. ”

—Sting[1]

However, this fact has often gone unnoticed, or is ignored, and hence the song is often taken to be a love song.[2]

The lyrics are also very similar to the opening lines of a short story by science fiction author Judith Merrill titled "Whoever You Are".

Police - every breath you take

I don't worry about these type of songs unless it's an obvious no no. Eg alot of first song requests are about falling out and breaking up. I often get asked for Band of Gold -great track, if it fills the floor whst matters?
