For my Christmas functions this year I'm gonna bring out my retired Ultimax 6ft stand (more for safety reasons as the clientelle can be a bit lively and they dance right up to, almost on top of, my rig).

One thing I'm looking at is to attach the L1 columns to the upright stand poles and then have a cable to the PS1s so that they are out of the way. I intend to put the B1s under the Ultimax stand.

So in order to do this I'll need a suitable method to attach the columns to the poles, some extension cables for the columns to the PS1s and possibly some longer B1 cables too.

Anyone tried this? As I say I'm only looking into the logisitics at present - where to get the connectors, how to attach the columns etc.

Well, as I'll be a Bose L1 (model2) system owner as from this weekend, (with a 2nd one arriving as backup before the xmas gigs start in earnest...I've been doing some further digging.

Apparently the height of the vertical poles/radiators from the floor is an important part of the audio propagation. If (again, apparently) the height of the L1 is changed, in relation to the floor, then the Bose wont sound as good as it could.

Whilst I don't dis-believe this, and indeed can grasp why such things would influence the sound, it poses some interesting venue/speaker location questions - for example: Speakers on stages higher than the audience.

This raises an interesting point, as the only time I have ever been asked to turn the volume on my Bose system down was when I was on a highish stage, and although the volume was not loud by any stretch of the imagination, the sound at the back of the hall was much louder than I would have expected. The additional carry from having almost the whole pole higher than the seated audience is something to be wary of.

Hanging them from your stand will only increase the altitude of them by 18" or so, so should not be a problem as I expect that you don't get instructions saying they should be on a dance floor rather than a stage.

The reason they were louder at the back of the room when you had them on a stage will be because of the uninterrupted path of the sound. Strange though that when using 'normal' speakers there is little noticeable difference when on the floor or stage.

What speakers are in the poles, are there 8 x 4 1/2" chassis like the old 802s?, are they all mounted in the same orientation or at different angles?

I could be wrong, but I think you may be making a mistake there Paul, as I am led to believe, the L1 columns are acoustically coupled to the floor - something to do with creating a virtual 14ft line array - this may be lost with what you propose.

Ask on the Pose Bose forum!!!

Just to clear up a point - the picture I posted was just a quick mock up and the speakers/stand combination are probably not to scale (I expect that the columns would be closer to the floor).

Jim each column has 24 speakers which are angled.

Brian - since making the initial post I have put it on the Bose forum too.

OK to up-date I have managed it. Only on one side due to my own mistake of ordering the wrong pins for the connectors (this was the hardest part of the whole thing - finding the right ones and a supplier).

This is not something that I intend to use at all events but it was specifically designed for my Christmas functions where I set up in an alcove which is not quite wide enough for my Ultimax stand and a Bose PS1 on each side. Last year I used my lighter rig which isn't as wide but when the dance floor gets lively they dance almost on top of me (I wish) and there were times when I feared for them and me - simply down to the number on the dancefloor and the falling over fluid drank in copious amounts. :xmas:

Here's the connector in the 1st stages after I'd attached the wires. The L1 uses 9 of the 10 pins and in order to achieve this many wires I used 7 core lighting cable and 3 core mains cable. As I had 10 cores I didn't bother to work out which pin is not used.

To attach the L1 to the stand I tried to scource parts I (& most DJs) would find easily available. I used a Ultimax Closed Casting and bolted on a sawn down lighting effect hanging bracket. To this I added a bolt with a large 38mm washer.

My original mock-up showed the L1 suspended however to keep it simple I decided to keep it at floor level (which actually meant it was the right height to just miss the lighting bar). To protect the metal clip brackets on the bottom of the L1 I used the original blanking pad that came with it - adding a piece of aluminium for extra strength and cutting a hole in the rear side for the lead.

To set it up is straightforward. The lead plugs into the bottom of the L1. This is rested onto the new base and held up against the stand. The bracket is slid down the pole so that the washer goes into the grove on the back of the L1. The top section in then connected as normal.

The B1s are behind the starcloth and the flame machine prevents people leaving their drinks on the conventional PS1.

In use it is stable and secure and I couldn't notice any difference in sound from one side to the other. I also feel that the adapted side offers more protection to the L1 in this particular situation which may be unique to me - but I thought I'd share it in case there are others who find themselves in a similar position.

Andy Rigler (the Bose rep) can give you details of a supplier of leads specifically made to enable the use of the L1 off of the PS1. I have his card somewhere with his email addy on it so can pass it on if required.

Cant see no pictures in your write up Paul.

That's because you didn't calibrate your mouse properly in the other topic :joe:

They are there - anyone else having problems seeing them?

I can see them, I did calibrate my mouse the other day though.

I'll roll back my system to before I did the mouse to see if I can still see them :joe:
