just thought I warn you breakdancing is apparantly making a comeback. My son came home from college and was telling me about his friends spinning on their backs and body popping. Looks like I'll have to dust off my Rocksteady Crew singles!!!

Why does everyone assume that break dancing started with Hip Hop, back in the early 70's dancers were poping, spinning on their heads etc at place like the Wigan Casino, to Northern Soul

so Soul Music is the basis of everything good

are u serious?

Can u do it?

i think ur better off watching my signature

but seriously now

That has to be the crappest instructions to Moonwalk, its very easy anyway.

Ian Stewart, i dont think it was soul that started Break Dancing.

I mean sure in 1974 the Jacksons were doing the robot at the Soul train awards, but breakdancing, is the term used for the dancers doing moves in the break of the beat.

this is all from research, and as a breakdancer myself.

I mean, umay think that, breakdancing is all spinning on heads, well thats one way.

The Moonwalk, which i can do, the deffinition is, a comibnation of break-dance and body-popping where the dancer appears to slide backwards while taking a step forwards.

There is also the sidewalk, Moonwalk in a sqaure, moonwalk on the spot, sidewalk in a square(havent mastered that yet!)

Robot, which is awesome, and body-popping.

Id like to be able to do the spinning, but i think, one Moonwalk and ive pulled.

I used to do the caterpillar, but i aint done it in 4 yrs, so i dont attempt to anymore, plus the moonwalk is SO much cooler!!!!!

earlier this year ther was a TV series presented by trevor Nelson call Soulnation, in the first episode the showed some clips filmed at the wigan casino in 1973 of people spinning on their backs & heads, perhaps it was not called breakdancing, but it sure looked the same.

Even Trevor nelson commented on that this is where the style of dancing started

Smooth criminal ross! Point slide, point slide - the words from a world famous choreographer to ensure that the dynamics of moonwalking were given a simple explanation! What do you do with your feet when you moonwalk then - pointing and sliding are the basic steps of moonwalking! Quite often the simplest explanations are the easiest to follow!

I totally agree with ian on the wigan front too! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Can I just say that Michael Jackson is not the be all and end all.. hes had his day, and its time to move on... yes he did do some brill stuff - this is a dj forum not the MJ appreciation society!

SCR - we are here to debate and we all have our opinions - perhaps when aiming comments at extremely highly regarded members such as Ian it should be done with a little more respect. I would urge you to think before you post - before telling members that some of their statements are crap!

Breakdancing started in 1969. That was the year that James Brown recorded "Get on the Good Foot," a song that inspired an acrobatic dance based on the high energy moves that Brown performed on stage.
