I can remember where the gig was. it was at the South Bank studio's on the river Thames for Channel 4. It was an after-party for Graham Norton, his guests & the studio audience. It was a last minute booking as well, since I wasn't planning on working it, but after seeing the cost of the admission charges into the local pubs / clubs I thought I may as well make it rather than spend it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif . Getting a gig at the last minute wasn't difficult since it seemed that everybody had left it until the last minute to book. We were booked for the private party of local recording studio owner in a large marquee in the grounds of his Estate (!). He was a bit of a flamboyant character it was a great night and possibly the best new years gig i've ever done. He also got a bargain since we played until 6AM. We were offered all of his parties from then on, but Sadly I heard that his only daughter committed suicide in Jan 2000 and since then he's become a bit of a recluse and no longer socialises. I just took some lighting and some party CD's that I'd made up. My mate however, took a risk...he turned down £600 from one place, £800 from another and so on...finally 2 weeks to go (ah so that'll be mid December then..) one of the larger companies called him (some mix up at their end - two people both thought that the other one had booked the Disco..). The fee?....oh yeah... £1400. Thats almost 5 times what he normally charges for a regular disco, or about 2.5 times what he charged for the previous NYE. Link to post Share on other sites

Mind you, lots of the local venues decided to not do anything as so many people including waitresses, bar staff etc were demanding such high prices that they decided it would be a non event for the millenium..... I quoted £750 for a booking I took in the October to work that night. The guy bit my hand off (I must have been cheap!) but by mid December he cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. I didn't charge him anything (Goodwill goes a long way and it got me subsequent work). I offered myself around at £500,,,, then £300,,, finally £250.. (only to pubs ect.. that DIDN'T already have a DJ booked). I got another taker at £250..... only to be cancelled again - the brewery wouldn't authorise the disco! thecolonel 0 Posted October 22, 2003 Report Share Posted October 22, 2003 was booked to a local club, they were gonna charge £75 per ticket a hellva lot for the area we are living (aprantly the poorest part in uk lol ) it was gonna be open 24 hours you could have as much drink as you wanted as much food as u wanted and proper cooked food u know not just a buffet, so i quoted a price £250 i was told i could invite as many people i wanted too lol, so i was asked by another person to do a gig in a local school for residents in the aera, she made the mistake of telling me how much she was willing to pay £500, with a £800 overdraft i was gutted, said i was already booked but she asked to be kept in mind if something went wrong with other gig. She must have known something with in a week the local club cancelled the gig due to lack of intrest not surprising £75 squid a ticket, must have been god shining on me that day i can tell u i have never run so fast to the phone box lol well with everthing that happened it was a cracking night everyone enjoyed themselves, must have been enjoying myself 2 i gave away a £20 quid prize to the best singer. Dukesy 0 Posted November 11, 2003 Report Share Posted November 11, 2003 2 parties in 2 centuries - depending on how you look at it. 8pm (or 9pmish) to 1am at a private club in Surrey All the lighting and sound system was there - so I only took my Pioneer's to plug in to the clubs system, and brought along the music. I had to work with a 7 piece band which were Out of This World, and stopped for the Firework Display (about 15-20mins). Took 5 minutes to pack away and load the car, but took 20 minutes to say goodbye to the clients and guests! £1,500 and a presentation box of Champers, 1999!!!!!! Then, went on to a friends party in Swanley, Kent, and carried on the celebrations till around 7am - watching the global highlights on Sky News after.
