Soul'ja Boy - Crank Up

Recommended Posts

According to todays Metro newspaper, this is the next dance craze (similar to Cha Cha Slide).

Personally I haven't heard it yet, but its expected to be a hit around Christmas time. It's already been a US#1 single. Anyone heard it or played it yet?

Oh me. Oh My. I've had this for a while...

I wouldn't even play it at my student R'n'B & Urban club night where I can get away with even playing "Sean Paul".

Its horrific!

I've not had it requested at all - have heard it on Zane Lowe's show on Radio One but he's playing some kind of remix of it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Radio One are playing the Travis Barker mix, which is probably the most bearable version. It's a truly dreradful song and it's currently going down like a lead balloon when I play it but, inevitably, after it gets hyped up a bit more all the idiots who rely on other people to tell them what music they should like will decide they love it. (How irritating is that BTW? Especially when you get a really good song long before it's UK release and the crowd gives you abuse for it, but a few weeks/months later the same people are begging you to play it! Grrr)

Unfortunately I reckon this track is gonna be huge. Don't know why, the song is poor, the dance is poor. Bring back the Macarena LMAO! tongue out icon

Oh and if you decide to punish yourself by getting this track, you might also want to endure:

Soulja Girl

Crank that Spiderman

Crank that Batman

Crank that Spongebob

and many other ridiculous variations

It's true, I downloaded this out of curiosity and it is awful! I can't imagine myself playing this, but if it does continue to gain popularity then maybe i'll have to reluctantly. IMO it's just noise, but maybe that's me getting old!

Anyway it's climbing the singles chart, probably top 20 by Sunday.

Why don't we start a national boycott? If we all unite (it's the name of the community after all) and pledge never to play this song ever again, no matter how often it is requested, we can kill it before it gets big!

Cant see that being the next cha cha slide, not by any stretch of the imagination.

I downloaded it on monday as its on radio 1's playlist, and I quite often download ideas from their.....

Now I have heard it, I am certain thats the only time I will hear it and certainly wouldnt give it the play time at a gig!

I played a small segment of it whilst doing my sound check on Sat and when I faded it out was approached by 2 members of staff who asked me to leave it on as they thought it was the best song out at the moment.

At the end of the night one of them asked why I hadn't played it during the actual function - simply no-one had requested it but I have a suspicion that I'll receive a text asking for it this week

I like the song and it has a good video to go with it but felel this is for the harder kinda of r&b grime nights and of course the under 18’s who will love there’s now way it would ever match the commercial success of the cha cha slide

Bad news folks. I played this dross last night and a bunch of attractive young (18+) girls got up and danced, they were loving it. At the same time all the old farts left. So it was a win-win. Looks like it may have to become a regular feature soon. I'm gutted.

Got asked for this last night - said that I didn't have it (due to previous dancefloor disasters with people voting with their feet and heading off to the bar) and got the look of utter disbelief and associated comments of it being a "must have" track, from the young requestee (looking like she'd overdosed on Wine Gums). I simply advised that I couldn't possibly have "everything" and asked them what other track they'd like - they went for the far more widespread likable "Dirrrrty" by Christine A.

Soul'ja boy is less than mediaocre imo.

I keep getting it requested now at student nights - but I won't play it.

I know that most people say "you can't just play what you like" as a DJ, and I don't - but I can't play this tripe! My guess is around 5% of people like it - ie just the ones requesting it. Most sane people will hate it.

Be afraid...

be VERY Afraid...

Tripe. Of the bear naked variety.

It asn't been disguised at all, it's there for all the world to hear what a load of dross this is.

NO WAY will it ever even sniff at the tail of Cha Cha Slide, and please may it soon get buried in a shallow grave never to see a PA system again.

I don't have it, and won't be buying it.

Bite the bullet and buy Clubland 12 Mick. Forget theat Soulja Boy muck, but most of my other most requested songs are on it (Heartbroken, What Hurts The Most etc) And this is one of the better Clubland albums. There's some great tunes on there.

I had a clubland 12 bit the other day, What hurts the most, about you now the dancey version an heartbroken its better than the original (because its shorter) and I hate that crank that only been requested once and didnt play it... said it had too much swearing in it. But going back to clubland 12 on disk 3 theres chasing cars by bootycallers had a night club the other day and played that towards the end was a brilliant success.

:dan+ju: Wash your mouth out young man!

Haha - I dislike Chasing Cars too - however I love "How to be dead" and "Spitting Games" by Snow Patrol.

:joe: :joe:

Back on topic - had loads of people badgering me to play "Soldier Boy" tonight however I managed to refuse for the whole gig!

I might have to end up playing it one day... late set... see what happens?
