Speakers Blowing

Recommended Posts

(drivers i mean)basically got a pair of class d jac 15 and have noticed they seem to distort when bass is applied recently, have had to back right off on the bass to them to sound ok ,everything is brand new(amp /mixer )but i have had them over the past 2.5 years and gave them a real work out. Are the bass drivers on the way out ? is it normal for them to go gradually and start to fart? does that make sense , ive never cliped the amp but have a 650rms amp per side going into a 500 rms speaker , should i repace the drivers ? i know the sound system and it deffinitly seem to lack the boom boom it used to have.

first thing to look at is the drivers, double check they are 500W RMS becuase I have a feeling they are no were near this...

also check everything is done up tight and nothing has shaken lose..

inspect the driver.. does it drag/scrape when pushed??

is there any visable damge to the cone ??

plug one in at home and turn it up to see if its realy busted or there is somthing else gone wrong in the chain from the mixer to the speaker..

you say you have never clipped the amp, does the amp have any limmitor or clip warning lights? check this is working..

the amp has clip warning lights so ill take some other gear tonight and swap it round see if the other speakers distort and fart with the same set up , i guessing the speakers have just about had enough , let you know tomorrow

I agree, have a gentle feel of the cone and make sure it moves freely in and out. If they've got a little hot, the varnish on the voice coils can bulge out or bubble and introduce drag. At worst it will jam the cone, sometimes it just goes stiff, farts and buzzes and generally plays at a lower level. If this is the case, they will eventually fail completely, either short-circuit (with possible amp damage) but more usually open-circuit which means they'll simply go silent. (it may then blow your tweeter as the crossover is unloaded).

If you're keeping them, I'd change like for like.
