Interview With Deejaymitch

Recommended Posts

After a sabbatical the interviews are back (well one anyway!). This time it's new member and cheesy pop maestro Mitch

1. What is your DJU Forum Alias?

deejaymitch

2. What is your Real Name, Age, Location & Marital Status?

Mitch, 27, Bangor (NI), very single

3. What is the Name of your Disco?

deejaymitch/mitch promotions

4. How long have you been a DJ?

Had some previous experience, but 2 years properly.

5. What inspired you to become a DJ?

Love of music, love of going out, hatred of working for someone else.

6. Are you a Full/Part Time DJ? If part time what else do you do?

Full-time now but worked as a bookmaker and a mortgage advisor previously.

7. What is your favourite type of function now? (eg: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc)

Residency. Regular crowds are so much easier.

8. What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Sang badly, danced badly, told bad jokes, all the usual.

9. If you could go back to the beginning of your DJ career is there anything that you'd do differently? (eg: The gear that you bought, the way you promoted/advertised yourself)

I probably would have taken it more seriously earlier instead of having to make up for lost time now.

10. What do you feel you offer the public that convinces them to book you rather than "the next guy/girl"?

A wide range of tracks, a good knowledge of music and a desire to ensure everyone enjoys themselves. Some DJ’s just do their set no matter what. I try to adapt to every crowd and give them what they want, like a human jukebox!

11. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn't? and why?

A bubble machine. Very slippery floor after a few minutes!

12. What's your next DJ purchase likely to be?

Probably headphones. I seem to go through a lot of them!

13. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

An all-in-one lightweight PA system that can climb stairs itself.

14. What was the worst equipment failure suffered during a gig?

I’ve been pretty lucky so far. I think my worst was a karaoke night with a temperamental TV and an even more temperamental CDG player. It’s was rare that both worked at the same time.

15. What do you think is the best thing about DJing?

The reaction. Seeing people enjoying themselves and knowing that you made it happen. And the easy women are fun when you’re starting out.

16. What do you think is the worst thing about DJing?

Unsociable hours. Or people who think that it’s easy. And stalkers!

17. What would make you stop DJing (if anything)?

I don’t think anything could.

18. How do you think DJing will change, in the next 5 years?

Venues, and people are going to realise it’s a lot cheaper to hook an Ipod up to a sound system and leave it on shuffle, than to pay a DJ. Oh dear!

19. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

“Play something decent” or any variation on that. That does my head in! Everyone has a different opinion about what’s decent so if you’re going to comment on the music, at least have a suggestion of your own! Inevitably though when you say back to the idiot “Like what?”, they have absolutely no idea what they want.

20. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Keep the girls happy and the guys will follow them.

21. And worst advice you were ever given?

You can never be too loud.

22. How do you keep up to date with music? (eg Promo monthly CDs, Downloads, Purchase from retailer)

Mainly through downloads and retail.

23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill the dance floor for you!

9 to 5 (Dance Mix) - Dolly Parton

Time Of My Life - Dirty Dancing

Set You Free - N-Trance

24. One piece of advice you'd give to someone just starting out.

Get to know other DJ’s first and make sure you fully understand what’s involved before you get into it.

25. What medium format do you mainly use eg vinyl, CD, hard-drive?

CD at the minute, in the process of switching to hard-drive (hopefully).

26. Have you embraced/adapted any ideas that you've read about on DJU - if so what?

Not yet. But I’m sure I’ll have plenty of tips when I put my very amateur website up for review!

27. What is your best gig ever and your worst?

It’s hard to say what my best was. There have been nights where I’ve felt really good afterwards knowing that I’ve done well but it’s probably because of things that most people haven’t noticed, like a nice bit of mixing.

My worst was probably a birthday party that only 4 people turned up to. I was mortified for the person whose birthday it was and felt guilty taking the money. But, that’s life!

28. Apart from 'Word of Mouth' what is your main (most successful) form of advertising your disco?

Bebo, posters around town, my website.

29. Are you a member of a DJ Association / Union?

Not currently.

30. Add any additional comments which you would like to include here...

Nope, I reckon we’ve got everything covered. But if anyone wants to ask me anything more, feel free!

31. How many gigs do you do a year, how many would you like to do?

I have residencies 4 nights a week at the minute, and do a private booking most weeks as well.. I’m happy with that.

32. What is your average charge for a booking?

Around £150. More for a wedding, or a big venue, or if it involves stairs!

33. How many tracks do you have in your music collection?

Around 23000. I’ll probably never play most of them!

34. Have you ever had someone try to claim off you? (eg: Public Liability Insurance or other such legal action)

Luckily not, and hopefully never.

35. What is your favourite music genre?

Cheesy pop

Come on folks, everyone else got loadsa replies to their interview. Massage my ego a bit and put a message on saying how great I am. I mean how great my interview is!

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

Sorry, I missed the interview when it was first published, I only saw it today when it got a bump.

Nice interview.

14 and 27 normally go together.

I can remember my worst gig (which was also the worst equipment failure).

It's easier to remember the bad ones.

Good answers  .

Don't let it worry you Mitch - I have noticed a trend recently where members don't reply. You've had almost 100 views though smile icon

PS This trend is also evident in the Birthday threads where clicking on an emicon to wish a member Happy Birthday doesn't seem to happen with the same magnitude any more
