A repeat booking form last year because of the music I played while they were eating their meal. (All soft instrumental Musak). It was a golf club dinner dance, and apart from getting in and out of the room which is up a set of outside wooden stairs, it's one of my favourite gigs. Half the room wanted ballroom, ie: quicksteps, foxtrots etc. (right up my street), while the other half wanted typical disco music. So I had to keep alternating between styles to keep everyone happy. Biggest laugh of the evening was when I was asked for a Barn Dance. Never been asked for one before, but I found a track that was called "Barn Dance", and it went down a storm. Only trouble was, it was 6 minutes long and they were waving white handkerchiefs towards the end in surrender. Organiser asked for the mic at the end of the night and was full of praise for the DJ with lots of applause from the guests. Hopefully, another repeat booking for next year. TonyB 0 Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 Saturday during the day visited client about a booking for next March then to parents for Sunday dinner (moved from Sunday because I couldn't make it) then evening with the band in Harlow just doing sound and lights. Sunday, DJ meet in Thetford. Monday, totally kna tired Tuesday, started to feel alive again. Link to post Share on other sites
shakermaker 0 Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 Thursday for me was my resident Indie Night at a local venue - Pretty quiet this week to be honest and from what I've heard, so was the whole town. Friday was my Retro night 'Back to the Future' at a local club. I promote it and DJ too and it's normally packed but this time round it was very quiet and a mission to keep going when the turnout was about 1/3 of what it should be. Saturday was a 40th birthday in Fleet. It all sounded promising to start with but then as the guests arrived I could see there may be a problem. I had a big set up but the volume was never pushed up. Lots of people talking all night, hardly any dancing and once people had their share of the buffet the place more or less emptied out. It didn't matter what I played, only around 10 people (out of about 60) got up and wiggled about. It was a bit soul destroying at the time as I was booked until Midnight and it felt like a really long night. Around 8.00pm a group of girls kept pestering me to play YMCA and I held off as long as I could because I just didn't want to play it that early. Around 11pm I thought to myself "**** it!" and went into a cheesy party set and the people that were left all got up and danced until Midnight. I had request slips out, I announced that I was willing to play their requests a number of times yet I only had 2 requests all night and that was for YMCA and American Pie. I was glad to get out of there to be honest but I am back at the same venue this saturday for my first Xmas Party for Waitrose. I'm positive that it will be better. Saturday - 25th wedding anniversay at aour local golf club. Great night playing stuff like James Brown, Fatback Band, Ike & Tina and loads of soul and disco. Great night! Tonsk 0 Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 Saturday night had an Autumn Ball for the British Show Jumping Association, area 28 (Norfolk) at a venue VERY close to my house... Which also had its own equipment, so all I needed was my CD players/mixer/HD2500 and the rest (speakers/lights) were there - Plus I was on with a band so easy night. I did this crowds gig last year (and had a call yesterday asking me to do it next year too).. Started at 9.45 after speeches/auction, then band from 10-11, me 11-12, band 12-1 and me till 2 finish... Really good night, except half way through a party set the power went off :scared: :scared: :scared: Frantically trying to trace the fault through the rousing choruses of "your rubbish", "boo", "wheres the music gone" etc when I heard the hotels fire alarm... Thankfully that is what had turned off the power - someone had hit one of the break panels in the kitchen by mistake, but still meant a full evacuation for 25 mins.... Still, when everyone got back inside the party continued unabated.... Then Sunday, picked up Norfolk DJ and his 9 year old son roadie Ben and headed off to the East Anglia DJ Meet.... Dukesy 0 Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 Week before, covered karaoke in Kent, Wedding Disco in Hampshire (Cadnum area) entertaining alongside an amazing singing duo - and I mean 'a m a z i n g'! Beautiful Hotel too. Enjoyed the whole experience. Only downside was the weather. Rain for much of the afternoon and early evening. Then hit a snow blizzard on the A6! The Snow held on till nearly mid-week too! Sure, it was chilly last week but didn't expect that. Grrrr! Friday gone, first 'Christmas' party of the season for a Film company, Westminster, London. Pre-paid the London Congestion charge during the week (online) - £8.00. Arrived at venue just before 5pm, after unloaded into service bay, moved car to find parking space in nearby Soho Square. Parking meters replaced with CC parking ticket machine where you can also pay via mobile telephone (automated system) which I opted for and can use again. Just over the hour to go before free parking kicks in after 6:30pm, so was charged £6.00. Set up equipment and changed by 7:30pm - pre-request music during meal till around 10pm. Room cleared, disco till 1.am De-rigged, loaded and on the road by 2am. Clients great. Hotel staff great. Thought the extra rooms they hired was a bit OTT in my opinion as only 50 guests to entertain. As requested, placed a speaker in one room for the 'Casino area' and the other in the designated disco area (approx 30 ft apart, separated by double set of doors). For this type of function, the Bose was amazing. Added the 2 x B1s for the 'disco area' which was 'thumpy' enough. Was told volume would be moderated by the function manager during disco (especially for bass due to the residents upstairs) but NO COMPLAINTS or comments about excessive volume on night! The only comment was that the speakers didn't look like disco speakers! Andy and i found we have about 12 thousand posts on here between us and there arent that many sensible ones ! I will try anything,once! The Cornish will arise again !
