Hello everyone, something got me thinking today.

Do we have any 100% fulltime DJ's on here? By that I mean someone who JUST does Djing (not event planning, wedding cakes, gear hire etc) - whether it be club or mobile work.

Most of the DJs I know seem to have day jobs and they'll maybe DJ 2 nights a week. I think I'm the only one I know who just does Djing - basic club/bar/occasional-mobile DJing to pay the bills.

I'm out most nights of the week at the moment and it's a strange lifestyle. Whilst your daytimes are free - most of my close friends have "normal" jobs so as they're finishing work and off to relax in a pub or on the couch, I'm off to work until 1, 2, 3am.

Just wanted to know what everyone thought of the "dj lifestyle" and how long you can keep up the unsociable hours for?

I'm in the same boat as you Jon. When I started DJing I had a day job as well but I'm now purely a DJ. I don't offer any other services. I work 4 or 5 nights every week which is why it bacame impossible to keep the day job. I love what I'm doing but it does get very frustrating that I have a totally different clock to most of my friends. I normally get home around 2am and am nowhere near ready to sleep so I usually go to bed about 5 or 6 am and get up around what most people call lunch-time (always up in time for the early episode of Neighbours!!!) So basically when I wanna socialise my friends are either in bed (middle of the night) or at work (daytime). And, of course, when they want to socialise (at night) I'm working.

Luckily a good mate of mine is also a full-time DJ and, through my residencies, I'm also friendly with a lot of bar staff who keep the same unsociable hours as me. So it's not all bad but, to be entirely honest, I am looking at getting a day job again and cutting back on the DJing. There are a number of reasons behind this (mainly concern about a big downturn in demand for the services of DJs very soon), but the strain of everyday relationships is definitely a factor.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

Yeah im full time dj ing now, when i started years ago i had a day job as well but gave that up 4 years ago to go totaly full time on the dj work

As to what i think about the "dj lifestyle" i do have mixed feelings about it, On the postive side of things im glad i made the jump into full time dj ing because if i didnt i would always be wondering what if?

I enjoy my lazy days off too but i do miss the socialise bit with my friends as im working when there out

I still enjoy djing however i dont like all of the gigs im having to take as i cant afford to be as fussy as i was when djing part time as i have to pay the bills and take gigs i would have turned down

Will i carry on djing full time? not sure, I can see myself getting a part time day job in the week and being more fussy over which gigs i want to take

I'm full time in the sense that I don't have any other job, but I only usually work 2-3 nights a week, so have plenty of other nights to go out. Then again, I do a bit of hire and event stuff too.. so its not all just DJ-ing.

Im a full time DJ.

I do have one other source of income and thats driving HGVs for an agency, but I dont do much of that these days.

Suits me because I can do the driving when discos are quiet and it means that the day job dont get in the way of disco commitments and if I dont want to work for the agency I just tell them Im not available.

Works for me anyway.

I've been full time since February 2006 and haven't looked back. I have the weekdays to myself (apart from christmas) and can do my admin etc and answer the enquiries and get back to them asap which does help.

DJing is my day job too. I work 2-3 nights a week, but during the day I run the company. Maintaining / upgrading equipment, taking bookings / other paperwork, sorting out which of our DJs is best suited to which job. Sourcing music that we don't have (not often these days) for specific advance requests. Liasing with clients / venues, site visits. Wages. Etc etc...........

So you'll basically do anything for money? There's a name for someone like that...

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

What sort of money are you full-timers turning over per annum?

I could not earn the money I make in my day job by DJ'ing.

It's not all about the money though. I used to have a very good job with a big, well-known, company where I had a good salary, great bonuses, loads of paid holidays, great benefits, share plans, pension, life assurance, health care etc. But I hated it, it just wasn't me. So I left it to DJ full-time and now I earn a lot less, have no paid holidays or bonuses or benefits or any of the other perks. But I'm definitely happier.

I've done a couple of residences, twice a month max because I get bored lol. However, by me unless you go into Brum City centre sun-wed nothing happens, so that leaves u Thurs, Fri, Sat to work which to me isn't enough to warrant that being my only employment.
