Last night I was in a venue in the centre of town. Packed all night with a great atmosphere and a really varied playlist.

Played lots of Chart, RnB, Indie and Retro but particluarly enjoyed being able to mix up a dance set including the likes of Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Pendulum, Wildchild and a nifty little mix between Freaks 'The Creeps' and Snow Patrol 'Chasing Cars' (Dance mix).

Tonight I am out of town and doing my first christmas party.

I did a 80's/90's disco last night with a crowd that were in their 50's and above. I had about 2 hours of music to play before a performer did her set then 30 mins in her break and then a further hour after she finished her set. It was a hard night for both of us. We both found it hard to keep people on the dance floor for more than 2 songs in a row. In the end we both ditched the idea of sticking with the 80's & 90's and tried ANYTHING to get them on the floor.

Most successful numbers for me, which sums it all up, were:

In The Mood - Jive Bunny

Making Your Mind Up - Bucks Fizz

I'm In The Mood for Dancing - The Nolans

Let's Twist Again - Chubby Checker

YMCA - Village People

I think my inexperience shone through to be honest. I got back in the car thinking "Damm I should have played this, I should have played that." The only thing was for the last 20 minutes of the night they were all up dancing so I was able to finish on a bit of a high. It's evenings like this that can knock your confidence though.

I am whatever you say I am

Don't feel bad. I'm sure we all have gigs that make us feel like kicking the cat when we get home. The 50+ age group can also be a difficult age group to please. They are more likely to want to sit around and talk than get up and dance. Just because they didn't dance that much doesn't mean that they didn't enjoy themselves. You could play the same set as you played last night to the same age group at a different function and they will be up for it all night. Its just the way it goes.

Its good to analyse afterwards what you think you could have done differently so next time you will try something different. All part of the the learning curve of being a mobile DJ - no two functions are the same and be prepared to expect the unexpected.

I do that every single night, so don't worry about it.

Thanks guys for your positive comments.

Yeah Tony, I think it is all a real learning curve. I can now see what a hard job it is to get things right and get a feel for the music that you should be playing. It was a very tough group. Most of them, well nearly all of them were from a golf club, and I had the feeling that their partners didn't really know one another so it felt quite an awkward bunch, where everyone was slightly uncomfortable. Had there been more of a mix of people I think that would have helped. At least I got them to dance some of the time. Unfortunately it was my second gig with the people that organised these events, and my main concern was letting them down. Lets face it, you hire a dj to get people on the dance floor the whole evening, and I failed to do that.

I am whatever you say I am
