Dillema Or Not

Just had a phone call this morning from a local club looking for someone with Karaoke for NYE, the usual thing, the one they had booked (for £180 with the promise of regular bookings) has let them down.

 

Now I'm not working, and don't particularly want to work. I told them the cheapest I could do it for (if I was able to do it after consulting her who must be obeyed) would be £400. This is still cheaper than it should be on my prices, would be £520 at my double time rate, which would be my proper price.

 

They've since come back to me and said would I do it any cheaper with the promise of doing Keri Katona's babys' Christening in February.

 

At the moment, I'm taking the view that the promise of the Christening should have no bearing on my decision, as I can't really see me getting swamped with bookings from stars at super duper prices.

 

What do you think?

 

Would you lower your price? Would you even consider the booking having already decided not to work NYE.

If I've decided not to work then I don't work. The only way I would change my mind would be if a big money offer came eg you say you would normally charge £520 for NYE, but the phone rings and a punter offers £800 then possibly you might reconsider your night off, if the wife agrees! However, here, the punter is going to pay a little less than your expected fee and possibly you might or might not gain another gig in 2008. This extra gig possibly would be filled anyway!

Personally No i would'nt lower my price Paul, they arent really going to have much choice this late.

They either want you or they dont, and as you said you werent bothered initally about NYE anyway.

Its your call but if it were me i'd explain you should be charging £520 so they are already have a good deal and stick to your guns !

From a goodwill point of view it may be to your benefit to compromise on price if you feel that you may get more out of it. I had a similar dilemma for a Christmas Party for a school that wanted to pay me a lot less than I normally charge but decided to go for it in the end and received several more full price bookings as a result (and then the School Party was canceled!)

Personally I would stick to the price regardless of any future 'promises' which could be just bluff/hot air - she might have her own ideas on entertainment (ex husband, ex band maybe ).

 

If you do decide to take them up on their offer though get the promise in writing as a confirmed booking with cancellation clauses.

Do you really want to work on NYE? No.

 

Could you be persuaded for £400? Yes.

 

Should you lower that figure, bearing in mind you don't really want to work and you ought to charge £520? No. Most definitely.

 

 

 

 

I've never really understood the point of having a DJ at a christening.

 

Wouldn't the guest of honour rather be asleep?

I agree with Spinner.

Stick to your prices. If they want you badly enough they'll pay, otherwise it's the night off as you originally planned - a win-win situation.

 

Don't consider this christening to be worth anything - I get the impression they are dropping in the name of a 'celebrity' here to try to lure you in, but of course you don't get starstruck, so it won't work, right?

Even if the christening goes ahead with you as DJ, what's it really worth long-term? Very little probably.

Update:

 

I realised when I got home last night that I couldn't realisticly do it anyway, as I sent my mixer back to Thoman for replacement after I lost/gave up the hotel Christmas run, and my next booking wasn't till 12th Feb.

 

Obviously, I do have a backup mixer (or 2), but would have to mess about with an external effects unit for the mics.

 

I've now put them in touch with a local colleague.

 

You just can't win with women though can you. Wife was not impressed that I've passed up £400, even though it was her that wanted me to have NYE off for a change. :wall:

As regards NYE, I would stick by the decisions that you have made...you had a reason for doing so, so I guess they must still be valid!

 

As regards Ms Katona..........If what i read about her economy is true.....you'd be lucky to even get the Iceland vouchers(and a whole bunch of prima donna behaviour!)

Kicking myself a bit now.

 

Replacement mixer arrived from Thoman yesterday so I would have had the gear to do it. (If only I understood women and could have predicted what the wifes reaction would be) :wall:

 

Spoke to the local colleague last night, and he's doing it for £300 after me telling him that they were prepared to pay me £400 :shrug:
