The Search For...come On Eileen

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at my vinyl collection, my watch, the inevitability of having to record it in realtime - eg: A 4 minute song takes 4 minutes...(compared to my home PC being able to rip both CDs of a Now Album in under a minute to WAV) and thinking..."Is it worth it?".

To add a certain perspective to this, I didn't bother loading/unloading any of my 12000++ vinyl tracks to gigs over December, and found that only 3 or 4 times out of 20 gigs did I think "Oh Rats...I've only got that on vinyl, I can't play it tonight".

One track which I've got on 7inch vinyl, is good ol' Dexys Midnight Runners (did anyone ever find out what or who they were running from, or to, for that matter?), and the party classic, "Come On Eileen". Now...I've got versions of this track on CD, and every single one of them starts with the simple, straightforward, bass notes.... "bom, bombom......bom, bombom....).

BUT...What I'm after is the name of a CD album, either by Dexys...or a compilation album name of a CD that has the version which starts with about 7-8 seconds of nothing but a fiddle (or some similar Violiny type instrument). I've tried listening to a few of the on-line music purchasing sites, but they invariabley start their previews somewhere in the middle of the track, not at the beginning (which is logical and great, 99.9% of the time), but alas, no good to me on this occasion.

Can anyone supply me with the full album title of a CD which they've got, if they've got one which features the fiddle-starting version of this track please. But NOT a live version (plastic bucket please...) although I suppose I could play the first 8 seconds of the live version then play the rest of the song from a different track...at a push.

Midnight runners were smugglers therefore either they are running stolen contraband or running from the police tongue out icon

Dexys is a drug refference. Short for Dexadrine (SP?) an amphetamine I believe, that 60s mods & 70 Northern Soul fans used to take to enable them to party all night (hence the Midnight Runners part)

Sadly, the To-rye etc etc, album version on i-tunes suffers the same lack of intro. thankfully, I've managed to get 2 credits from i-tunes for 2 of the 3 versions which I downloaded - none of the 3 had the fiddle intro, dispite me picking 3 versions with quite different track lengths - eg: 3 mins 20secs, 3 mins 50secs etc.

Oh well.

Used all over the UK, Steve! (Even down here)

And that theory, plausible as it sounds (and as widespread as it is), is not correct. The Boyos themselves stated that this WASN'T what it meant..... Sorry!

Cheers!

So what about the line in Geno? "This man was my bombers, my dexys, my high"

Also Wikki agrees with me & I'm sure I've seen both Kevin Rowland & Kevin Archer (who I would be more inclined to believe) state it to be the case in print.

My version of Too Rye Aye has the intro, as does the 12" version

  • 2 weeks later...

Yes to Jackie Wilson said, and Geno.

I'd never realised that there were versions without the fiddles at the start, I'm sure I've got it on CD with the fiddlers beginning (they were called the Emerald Express btw) I'll have a check tomorrow. I know I've got it on two or three albums (CD's)

Black Bombers, French Blues (Dexys) and, of course, Purple Hearts, were common in the 60's.

Of course the line might mean that listening to Geno Washington produced a high.
