Big B 0 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Share Posted January 26, 2008 Hi Daniel, there are a lot of FREE website building programs out there, all you have to do is put in a search engine free website builder, the only problem is though they will place adverts on your site as you are getting it free. i am fairly sure that any professional website builders will not do it free as there is the domain name to be paid for as well as hosting the site and of course the time it takes to put the pages together. Do you know how to get the finished code onto the hosting server? One thing to remember with HTML/CSS code is that the more complicated you make it, the less likely the page is to display properly on all browsers. Maybe look at a simple page using the most basic of HTML coding - may not look so 'flashy', but at least it will be seen by all as you indend. Also, cluttered sites such as the examples you gave are not really all that user-friendly. Just concentrate on the information the potential client needs and resist the temptation to impress yourself - others will simply be annoyed at the silly graphics and the excessive load time. Mr Site is an online website builder which I used to do mine, its all pretty simple and anybody with any amount of computer knowledge could cope with it......after all I managed to do mine and I aint exactly a website designier..... Have a look at mine, thiers a link to Mr Site at the bottom of my home page.... I know you said you couldnt pay.......but this is only £30 (I think), not the hundreds of pounds that you was maybe thinking it was gonna cost. Link to post Share on other sites

I was going to suggest that too and they are giving away a free domain name as well at the moment but I think it would be better to register your own with someone like 123-reg (it costs less than a tenner). These offers that give away free domains can cause problems if you want to move to a different host so it is always best to register it yourself and keep control of it. Apart from that, Windows live produces awful code that is not W3C compliant and their pages seem to be missing header tags that the search engines read. Link to post Share on other sites
vokf 0 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Share Posted January 27, 2008 Hi Danny, As the others have mentioned, you'll need: -Hosting (normally space on a server which stores the files for your site) -Domain name (.co.uk is £10 from easily.co.uk or 123.reg etc) I'll be happy to provide 1 year basic hosting on my server for free (providing its only used for your DJ site). Whilst you're hunting for a web designer, I'd recommend taking pictures of your shows (if you've not already got some). Its also possible to use "Google Pages", these allow you to create fairly simple sites. This is a web-based editor, so an option if you get really stuck. If you're editing the raw HTML, there is a free web editor named NVU This runs on most PC's, and has some site management tools (as opposed to simply editing a single page) My observations are: -"Hire Updates" box. Does not stand out- the link is not obviously a link. I'd personally make it a graphic, and bit more "in yer face".. -DM Discos block text. Lots of search engine "fodder", but it doesn't read very well. Perhaps use the middle paragraph ("Thinking of having..."), trim it back a bit. -Spelling and grammar. Correct what you can, there are a few silly mistakes - possibly typos. Once you think you're done, get someone else to proofread it. -Images... Its a bit bare! For sites I work on, I sometimes use images from "www.istockphoto.com" (and others). There will be 1000's of Party-type images for £0.50 Having some nice images of people having a good time will brighten it up a bit. Don't pick any pictures with DJ gear on it though- you don't want to mis-represent yourself. -Take off links to things that are not complete (or even starting) yet. I can see you've mentioned a forum on there. This will really be 6 months off unless you can get people actively posting on it. A blog is a good idea though. Google Analytics is your friend... http://www.google.com/analytics/ Sign-up and paste the supplied Javascript just before your </body> tag (at the end of the page) Its a nice system. You do have cPanel with your hosting, so you will probably have AWStats, which is pretty good, but Google Analytics is "nicer" I use it with any stores I develop. I would avoid putting a visible hit counter on the site, its very "90's" and unless you inflate the number of visitors, it will look pretty poor to see 00010 whilst you're building up traffic. Statcounter offer a free web stats service (more info if you pay) which is invisible - the best option I reckon. Beware the meaningless sales rubbish: "We are specialist suppliers of mobile disco and karaoke entertainment for every occasion." So - specialists in what? I'd leave this bit out. Also declaring that you were established in 2006 may put a lot of people off - no need to put that info up there. If the customer is interested, they can ask. Other than that, and the comments already passed, we'll rip it to pieces later on when you've had a chance to work on it a bit. smile icon Link to post Share on other sites
