lots of negitive feed back about Computer DJs but dont talk about it here becuase you will get shot down in flames by the DJs who use computers and i must admit that some do it very well ....

and there is nothing wrong with DJing from a computer if you dont get lazy and let it do the work for you...

somthing to think about however is a bit of a cross between a CD player and a Computer..

a hard disc controler from the likes of Numark , Denon , Cortex , Pioneer will allow you to DJ as if you were playing CDs but with your music on a Hard drive like a computer...

best of both worlds if you ask me.....

welcome to DJU and i hope you enjoy it here

Welcome to DJU - I don't think the delivery system of the music is as important as the quality & the selection played. :welcome:

lots of negitive feed back about Computer DJs

I think that there's a world of difference between "Computer DJs" and "DJs, who happen to use computers". The "Cheated" scenario to which you refer to in your openning post is more common, I would say, to the former, the "Computer DJ" for reasons perhaps summed up by Marky with...

I think this is the key point - there are DJs people out there, who will set up some lights, plug in a couple of speakers, double-click on 5 hours of playlist, get out their pipe and slippers, lean back and (with their fingers crossed) collect a cheque at the end of the night.

I've even know one agency/disco shop buy a boot full of lappys and just send Dinner Jacketed trainees out with gear to cash in on the Christmas Party surge in December.

I use (and demo) one of these - the Denon DN-HD2500. It allows you to DJ as you would normally, with a 19inch rackmount controller, looking not unlike a dual-cd deck control panel, but you're DJ'ing with tracks from either its internal, or upto 4 external harddrives, professionally, without Windows.

Just a few years ago, if you wanted to DJ from a hard drive, you only had one choice to make, a laptop, or a full-blown PC - both had advantages and disadvantages. Thankfully now, there are the dedicated controllers.

From a customers/guests point-of-view, the hard drive controllers don't look like a laptop, so you shouldn't get any comments about DJ'ing from a laptop.

Again, welcome to the forum.

OMG I have been spotted, you must have been to one of my gigs chris!!! :hide:

Got the slippers, but no pipe these days since the smoking ban LOL

Seriously though....

Thats exactly what I do, Traktor 3 coupled to a behringer bcd 3000......best of both worlds.

I have never had a negative comment from a punter about use of a computer either.....

In fact quite the oposite and I have been complimented on my system of music playback, people often come up and are interested to find out how it works and how I use it.

thanks for the advice,,,i think your right,, its all up to preference,,and how you present it,,,i dont want to get lazy,,,just practical..and i think a computer will do a acceptable job for me,,,especially,,for taking,,a vast range of music..i think i will take some form of backup,,however, for a little while anyway,,so thanks for advice ,,,and hope to talk soon,,,

At the minute I use 2 CD players and a laptop, all through the same mixer. I've had a lot of negative comments about the laptop from idiots. One came up to me while I was cueing a track on a CD and said "What are the headphones for when the computer does it all for you?" I nearly turned violent.

Recently someone told a fellow DJ in another bar that he was better than me because he used real CDs and I only used a laptop. This amused us both as he uses an HD controller with a CD player for backup/songs not added to the hard drive yet, and so I use CDs a lot more than him.

The negativity around PC DJing is mainly caused by misinformation and misunderstandings, but unfortunately people do get the wrong impression quite a lot.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

A PC is porbably the best way to go now.

You can set up a few playlists and work from there.

I use CD and MP3 at the moment.

But a PC is the way to go next for me.

A DJ gets a lot of attention and that upsets some people so they have to try and run the DJ down.

Surely making the job easier using a PC is the way to go ?

Its got to be better than skipping cd's !
