Hi all

I have recently purchased another laptop for my wifes childrens disco gigs...

Its a Siemens Amilo Pi 2521 with Vista pre-installed.. We have had a few crashes with it and wonder if its vista that might be the problem... I have now purchased a copy of XP Pro (Licensed Version) and am installing that now....

Any advise or experiences with vista or this laptop would be most welcome.

Intel core 2 Duo CPU T5250 @ 1.50 GHz

987 MHz 1.99 GB of RAM

250 HDD

Have been using it with otsav (Licensed version) but every now and then crashes...

Cheers

Nik

Hi Nick

not the same laptop but ive also been running a amilo 1505 with vista installed with only 1gb ram and have had no problems with crashes. ive now upgraded the memory to 2gb ram just to speed it up a bit.

to be honest i think its a wise move to update it with xp pro.

im also now in the process of taking out a mortgage to pay for my new alienware laptop but thats also got vista installed. let us know how the xp pro gets on and i might update mine as well.

Will do Jim... Do you use th video part of ots??? It seems to just freeze when it feels like it can go for 10 mins or two hours then we have to remove mains and battery only way to re boot.

Flippin Vista full of stuff you dont need... Wish Bill would do a no frills op system for people who dont want to play games or have opaque folders etc.... Still would not be with out my Dell XPS....

Can't find any reported problems with the Siemens.

My only gripe would be (and it's not necessarily relevant here) is that I would always avoid Siemens (amongst others), if for no other reason than Siemens are one of those manufacturers that appear to be 6 months out of date with their hardware.

As I say, not necessarily relevant for your uses, I just get annoyed with so many manufacturers that charge the same price as the innovative ones, with 'old' technology...and don't say 'at least they know it works' because that is DEFINITELY not guaranteed!!

Cheers!

Hi Roy.. We got it cheap and it has 2 gig of ram and a 250 gig HD was about £100 cheaper than the ones at PCW and they only had 80 gig HDs.... Laptop seems fine just vista is junk for our use... I now have XP Pro on it so will give that a go... Thanks for your time in replying, appreciated...

not long lol I remeber a mate of mine buying a pc with a 30 MEG HD this held Dos windows 3.1 and some prog's as well as any saved items....

We cant boot up on 30 meg now lol....

Got XP on laptop now, having some fun finding drivers for some of the components in the machine but getting there... I think this will be a problem for people buying new machines but wanting XP on them, Well untill Vista has some service packs I guess...

he did its called VISTA BASIC....

Well untill Vista has some service packs I guess...

service pack one should be with us this week but its not going to fix the random crashes as thats more down to a hardware problem or incompatible old software which shouldnt be on your laptop...

if you have a problem with your laptop frezzing and you have removed vista and put XP on there then you will find your warranty is going to be hard to use. lots of people are getting told to go away when they come back to the store with xp on there vista laptop...

Have seen Vista running on a laptop which looked pretty fast but then again, it wasn't running a DJ program! Looked nice…..

Have a Sony Vaio but the screen has packed up. Have not bothered to investigate why but on reflection, the machine was pretty good with XP - and I was told that a Vaio would be no good for media stuff!

That's now been replaced with a Toshiba laptop which came with Vista basic installed but it was really s l o w. Upgraded the memory and installed XP leaving the vista recovery on the HD which can always be retrieved at a later date if really necessary.

Toshiba have a series of downloads on their site which allowed me to install the drivers for the model I have.

The difference in speed of XP to Vista was amazing - but I must confess, I don't really like either operating systems!

The next electrical item likely to be purchased is a toaster where the only difficulty in the operating system is likely to be the operator - me!!

Well all sorted now XP Pro on laptop purchased from PC fair for £45 drivers finally sorted online and run most of today with no crashes.....

And as you say dan much faster with XP... I did think about going for Win 2000 as I think that might have been even more stable but its not as well supported now so XP was the best choice I think....

PC fair is that a shop or online as that's damn cheap, could do with a copy for my pc as Vista's a real pain easily solved with a dual boot though smile icon

so, to slightly digress.

can i uninstall vista on my laptop and just re install XP then?

I would be very careful not to attempt removing an operating system - do a little research first.

When I looked up the model of my laptop, I found via Google PC based forums and Q&A pages install issues (and there were many) in installing XP on Vista shipped machines. Had I not followed their idiots guide - I would have been left feeling like - an idiot!

It's not impossible to install XP - fortunately for me, XP and Vista had both been shipped on the model laptop I have so it was lucky I could download from Toshiba the XP drivers.

But if I'd had a different model machine where vista was the only OS shipped, it would be likely that the internal hardware, e.g. the SATA drives would have caused me a problem in attempting an XP install.

Like I said, not impossible to install XP but there would have been a few headaches along the way and I would have had to manually load the SATA drivers.

As suggested, there may be an issue if there are any faults on a new newly purchased machine and indeed, the warranty could be affected so please do bear that in mind.

I have used Vista for a good few months now and not really had any problems.

It seems to more solid than XP but does seem quite a bit slower.

I write software so need to use Vista whether I like it or not as the software I write must work under both XP and Vista.

Your 1.99 GB of RAM is absolutely fine, I use a similar amount and windows never seems to use more than 1.5GB. Vista will run with 1GB but not terribly well.

I have played around with a couple of DJ packages and both were difficult to use and I cant remember which one crashed a lot !!!! A DJ package that crashes is absolutely useless.

It oculd be the software yo uare using or your laptop might have RAM problems.

I doubt that it will be Vista unless your DJ software has not been tested properly with Vista ?

fwiw, when I went to laptop I got a Toshiba with 2 hard drives and vista preinstalled. On the second hard drive I installed XP. Took a bit of digging around on the internet but finally found a forum that let me know which drivers I needed to make it work under XP.

Installed Traktor, plugged in a Behringer BCD3000 and away I went! Until I got the dreaded clicks and dropouts. Turns out that particular chipset has problems with large USB data streams! Fixed again by the geeky forums that suggested installing Asio4all. Also increased all latency to max.

I highly recommend this free software to handle multiple sound cards. I now use BCD3000 for audio playout and onboard soundcard for cue monitoring.

So I've installed everything on the Vista drive and that works seamlessly as well. 2 hard drives (music files and software mirrored). Hope that's enough backup - haven't had a crash yet with either system.

The coolest part is though, now I can plug my phone in and purchase requests online while DJing - punters find that very sexy.

If anyone wants, I also have setup a Traktor file with lots of functions setup on the keyboard, no Mouse! I can pass on file to anyone who is using Traktor and who wants to throw mouse away
