Well it's been a month or so since the last interview but today in the hot seat is one of our newer members. Have a read and don't forget to make your comments too!!

 

1. What is your DJU Forum Alias?

2. What is your Real Name, Age, Location & Marital Status?

Gary, 21, Sunderland, and Single

 

3. What is the Name of your Disco?

WotUWnt2Hear

 

4. How long have you been a DJ?

Bedroom djing - 14, Childrens parties - 16 and mainstream - 18

 

5. What inspired you to become a DJ?

Looking up to a DJ at a family party.

 

6. Are you a Full/Part Time DJ? If part time what else do you do?

Part time. Also part time bar supervisor Monday to friday :)

 

7. What is your favourite type of function now? (eg: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc)

Childrens parties (under 8's)

 

8. What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Pressing "Cue" on the playing deck

 

9. If you could go back to the beginning of your DJ career is there anything that you'd do differently? (eg: The gear that you bought, the way you promoted/advertised yourself)

Business cards from the start

 

10. What do you feel you offer the public that convinces them to book you rather than "the next guy/girl"?

A personal service. Also i'm a childrens entertainer and not just a dj!

 

11. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn't? and why?

£700 setup off ebay. Enough said on that matter :$

 

12. What's your next DJ purchase likely to be?

The new ACME lights!

 

13. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

Cables that don't get knotted up!

 

14. What was the worst equipment failure suffered during a gig?

Bass bin. Gone during an 21st last year in August, only problem was that it was the amp to! Luckily i had a spare amp, not that big but it done for the last hour. The best part of the night to blow to... during bingo... with no sound... still to this day don't know why but it was under warranty still.

 

15. What do you think is the best thing about DJing?

Pleasing people. Nothing better than having 300+ people screaming DJ Miko - What's Up!

 

16. What do you think is the worst thing about DJing?

Poor attended parties... worst example i can think of is an 18th, where only 5 of his invited guests turned up. Ouch.

 

17. What would make you stop DJing (if anything)?

Medical problems

 

18. How do you think DJing will change, in the next 5 years?

Hmmm... not sure

 

19. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

Played a whole song without any bass without realsing till 30secs to go. *Rolls eyes*

 

20. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Don't try and put a voice on over the microphone

 

21. And worst advice you were ever given?

Complete oppsite to the above

 

22. How do you keep up to date with music? (eg Promo monthly CDs, Downloads, Purchase from retailer)

Downloads mainly.

 

23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill the dance floor for you!

Quite a range i know!

 

 

24. One piece of advice you'd give to someone just starting out.

Laise with client before the event.

 

25. What medium format do you mainly use eg vinyl, CD, hard-drive?

MP3 for radio edits, cd's for all mixing

 

26. Have you embraced/adapted any ideas that you've read about on DJU - if so what?

Not yet - sure I will in the time to come!

 

27. What is your best gig ever and your worst?

Best gig - A childrens party at Bournemoore, everything about was fantatstic!

Worst gig - The 18th I mentioned above.. five friends :|

 

28. Apart from 'Word of Mouth' what is your main (most successful) form of advertising your disco?

Yellow Pages

 

29. Are you a member of a DJ Association / Union?

Equity

 

30. Add any additional comments which you would like to include here...

This is taking longer than I thought it would!

 

31. How many gigs do you do a year, how many would you like to do?

Usually on average 3 kids parties a weekend and 1 adult party. For some reason I tend not to get Friday work.

 

32. What is your average charge for a booking?

£125 - Adult [say 7.30-12] and £115 [2hr kids]

 

33. How many tracks do you have in your music collection?

Being honest, not sure!

 

34. Have you ever had someone try to claim off you? (eg: Public Liability Insurance or other such legal action)

No *touch wood*

 

35. What is your favourite music genre?

Brit pop!

Amen to the answer to question 13 brother - i spend half my life untangling that pesky electric string

Sound - 32 Channel System, 2 x RCF 4Pro 6001 & 4 x RCF TTS18A Subs - 6K RMS Active System

Lights - 4 x Martin Mac 250+, 4 x Assorted LED FX, 6 x 1m LED Pixelpar, 2 x 1500 W Strobes, PC Control

Video - 6x4 to 14x10 ft screens & assorted projectors, plasmas, 10 DV Layers, broadcast cameras.

DJ Miko - What's Up - great version.

 

Wow - with three kids parties on the trot, you'll clear £345 for only performing an hour and a half more than an adult gig! :Thumbup:

Looking at it the other way, you'll have to perform for 13 and a half hours to earn £375.

But great if you can earn £500 a weekend for only 10 and a half hours performance. :Thumbup:

When I was preparing this interview I noted the point Dan has highlighted but was waiting for someone else to bring it up.

 

Adult parties half the price of Childrens' ones (in terms of payment vs hours) - that's certainly a change from the norm ...

yeah. ive tried putting the prices up, and fail.

ssaying that our kids parties are usually disco & games for 50mins, 20mins for eating then 50mins magic show:D
