Drum And Bass

Recommended Posts

I do a lot of 18th and 21st Birthdays as I am still fairly up to date with modern day music, however there is one genre of music knowledge that alludes me 'Drum and Bass'.

I am always asked for Drum n Bass and have always manage to bluff my way out of it, however I am worried that one day I will not have the gift of the gab.

Please can I have some help with what songs work. However I do need patronising and I was wondering if any helpful drum and bass Djs could let me know some popular commercial drum n bass (heard on Mainstream Radio) and then some more specialist songs (only heard on specialist radio shows).

I know this is a big ask, but I am keen to get about 30 minutes of decent drum n bass to help me out of a sticky hole if needed. :thanks:

To be honest I very rarely get asked for drum & bass and even if I do I tend not to play it as no one will dance lol

What I've done is gone on ebay and picked up cd's of trance anthems, drum & bass, speed garage, hip hop, etc you can usually pick them up for 3 quid including postage, so I know that at a push I can at least play a couple of tracks even if I dont know them

Just as an aside 30 mins of drum and bass will seem like about 3 weeks unless it is a very specific audience you are playing to lol

I play slam by pendulum on occassion, but this is where I get all my genres mixed up as I wouldn't really class that particular track as drum and bass lol.

I wish someone could tell me the difference between, house, funky house, bassline house, breakbeat, dirty disco, electro etc etc as the only expalantions I get are rubbish lol.

I asked someone once about the difference between two types of music and they said that one had "tight beats". As opposed to what loose beats? lol

Think I'll go and lie in a darkened room....

I couldn't agree more. Drum n Bass is not my cup of tea, but more and more of the discos I am doing (18th and 21st) the selection of music asked for is so diverse I like to be prepared.

My choice of music that I listen to at home and in the car is diverse and I know that I cannot play this unless I get asked, as I will clear the dancefloor, however I still take it along with me and it has got me out of sticky holes before.

For example a 40th birthday.

Turns out he was a closet trance fan... Well he didn't tell me before when I met with him, got him to fill out a music questionnaire. But luckily I am a trance fan and just happened to have my CDs in the car. It went down brilliantly.

My concern is I play 1 Drum n Bass song as requested (Pendulum) and then I get inundated with more requests for it. Where do I go next???

Pendulum - Slam / Hold your colour / Tarantula

Shy FX - Shake Your body

Dj Marky - LK

Kanye West - Gold Digger (High contrast Mix)

Utah Saints - Something Good '08 (High contrast mix)

They're the ones I usually use, start with Kanye West to come out of an RnB set. Keeps the lads jumping about for 20 mins or so whilst the girls all come up and nag you for RnB and normal dance music!

Revolution Discos - Covering Midlands and the Cotswolds - 01386 898 113 - 07791 261 263

I use the same trick I use when anyone ask for a specific genre - I ask them to give me some examples of what they want. 9 times out of 10 they haven't a clue what they are talking about anyway.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

If you stick to commercial drum n bass some of it might just appeal to others

i.e Pendulum, Prodigy.

I often start a D & B set with Blood Sugar by pendulum...... it sort of sets the tone..... and gives non D&B fans a chance to run & hide :-).... I have even been known to use the intro at the start of 18th b'day parties. It certainly gets their attention. ( you have to listen ti it to get what I mean )

The oldest swinger in town....... probably. Happy Easter.. well I have seen easter eggs in the shops

are the prodigy drum and base?

No. But there is a Pendulum mix of Voodoo People.

Check out the High Contrast Mix of Axwell - I Found You. Heard it on Zane Lowe and had to have it.

Thanks ... Dave

I specialise in 18ths and 21sts as well and I tend to play about 20/30 minutes of drum & bass at a typical 18th. Tracks I use:

Pendulum - Blood Sugar

Prodigy - Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix)

Pendulum - Tarantula

Pendulum - Slam

Kanye West - Gold Digger (High Contrast Remix)

General Levy - Incredible

Axwell - I Found U (High Contrast Remix)

Hard-Fi - Hard To Beat (London Elektricity Remix)

Dizzee Rascal - Sirens (Chase & Status Remix)

Just a few there, there is a lot of Pendulum there because they are the most commercial D&B artists out there really so I tend to do a live megamix of those 4 tracks.

Hope this helps

  • 3 months later...

I'm a drum & bass dj and though pendulum no longer release drum & bass anymore i would recommend anything by Sub focus and High contrast. The best tunes of the last few years are as follows

If we ever - High contrast

Oh Yeah - Jonny L

Airplane - Sub focus

Hurt You - Chase & status

Racing green - High contrast

Slam - Pendulum

Timewarp - Sub focus

Be True - Commix.

Hope this helps

Pendulum is often a great way to satisfy a audience's want for a little bit of drum and bass!

Drum and bass has one of the highest BPM's in my set (174 and above) so usually have to use a bridge song to get up there without loosing the beat.

Youtube is a great way for exploring new genres - just type in DnB and look for some of the higher play counts - thats usually what people like to hear!

Good Pendulum songs -

Slam

Tarantular

Vault

blood sugar> great way to start a DnB set

Axel grinder> "

If you want a DnB experience check out Black Sun Empire - Arrakis ...wow (and yes its inspired by the book by Frank Herbert!!!)

Try what I do: kids parties up to the age of 11, skip the next 10 years (ie: no 18ths or 21sts, I turn them all down), then go for the late 20s, 30ths & above and weddings.

Hey presto! A totally drum and bass free career. Bliss.

(Not much help to you though, sorry!)
