Disco Set Up 'the Look!'

Recommended Posts

Well guys i have had both set ups..... light boxes...and things balanced on the top of them.

eventually sticking them together with gaffer tape..to keep them together.

or

now i have the speakers on poles and cloth look .................... whats your thoughts.

Personally, especially looking at some recent posts i think the light box thing is old fashioned.....a bit

phonix nights.....I had them yes i know dont knock it.

I do think we all should try and be original and i dont think the look i have is yet! Im surprised

including myself that more djs dont have some nice 4 colour printed banner with the road show / dj name

at the front of the show even phone number and email..... theres some good products out there.

what can you come up with? i dont use a star cloth at the front never fancied one........i have a rubber black

sheet i brought from a fetish website believe or not........shiny on one side matt black on the other, wipes down....yuk...nice and for weddings matt, younger gig shiny........ it looks alright .......and easy

but..its still a black table i have a lighting effect i shine onto the front thats ok...but i think the banner is the way forward perhaps on speaker stands???

I SAY! SPIFFING SOUNDS.

I use a plain black strech fabric cloth. The strech fabric means it looks smooth from the front. It covers nicely and looks very neat.

The reason I do not have a printed banner is because I do not believe they look suitable for the type of functions I do (mainly weddings and corporate functions.)

I do have a star cloth 1 decks skirt and 1 4.5 metre x 2.5 metre backdrop. However I only take them out when I have somethign behind me that spoils the look of the show like windows or some sort of decoration etc.

I still consider that light boxes have there place in a disco. Although I do not use them myself any more due to space restrictions in the van.

Depends on the kind of functions you were doing. Personally I think if you had this at a wedding it would cost you more in lost bookings than it would gain.

If you don't believe me then ask brides what they think of the idea (I did) and the answer was pretty loud & absolutely clear.

Agree 100% I have no signage, disco name, telephone number on the Rig at all, If potential customers want my number they ask for a card.

And as Paul said. Most Brides prefer it that way.

The oldest swinger in town....... probably. Happy Easter.. well I have seen easter eggs in the shops

And its easier to sell your starcloth in the end without disco name on it.

i would agree with paul on the banner(sure we have discussed it before,do a search you might find an interesting thread) as with lightboxes or starcloth they both have there place depending on the function and what you like, the main thing is whatever you use it is neat and tidy and not over the top for the event

I'm sure my wife would understand if she walked in while I was browsing fetish sites for a piece of black fabric, I'm just off to a porn video site now to check out cameras :bouncy:

I started Discos again in 2006 after a 20+ year break, and my small rig has changed since I re-started. Take a look at these pics and judge for yourself, as it has examples of most mentioned in this thread. Personally I prefer the latest look as it's more subtle.

oh and as for lightboxes looking out of date, this is my bigger rig with LED tubes and older lightboxes. I think they look good together, and certainly very effective at night. Get loads of comments about how nice the disco looks when it's dark.

I'm sorry but I think that looked like a candy floss stand.

And now you know why I changed it...lol

By the way Jim, I've got a Candy Floss Stand too!

Personally I have nothing against light boxes. They can had a bit of colour to an otherwise black and drab looking front. If I had the room to transport them, then I would get some but would ask the client which they preferred, either the light boxes or black curtain. I know of other DJ's that have both and its a roughly 50/50 split for which the client chooses.

I personally wouldn't have a large banner across the front advertising name and telephone number. If I was doing a freebie charity fund raising function or similar, then I probably would. But for a paying client I prefer to keep the appearance more discrete.

BTW I think all the others look OK.

I've recently started using a star cloth instead of the screens, also I've replaced all my scanners with LED lighting. I'm getting too old to cart all the heavy gear about.

Saw a guy with a peice of giraffe truss standing each side of his setup. Had a moving head sitting on top of each peice with a par uplighting the truss, looked reaaly good. Very contemporary if you know what I mean!

Am a believer that less is more. Obviously as mentioned, depending on the function... Keep the rig free from clutter and keep it symmetrical looking. Thats my opinion for a nice looking rig.. I don`t like names on the front..

I think that's taking client consultation a little far! You'll be asking them "Shall I turn up in the transit or the volvo?" next.

I think light boxes (or screens) have had their day though, I've put mine on the tip as I couldn't even give them away, and storage was a problem. I'm more into colour 'co-ordination' these days, nice washes etc....and a blitzer of a strobe!!!!! :joe:
