Dmx Leads - Aaaarrrrrrg!

Just home from holiday to find my delivery of 20 Eurolite PAR 64 LED usint have arrived ready for use tomorrow. Decided this time to go for the floor standing version.

 

However, using the brackets to stand the unit facing more or less upright (to provide wall wash duties), my dmx leads, once plugged in, are too long and won'd allow the lights to stand on the bracket!

 

Any thoughts. Have had a quick scout about for right angle adaptors (plugs available, but I don't have time to make up leads!).

my first idea was to bolt some blocks of wooden baton to the floor brackets. This would lift the bracket, the lights and therefore the DMX sockets just that bit further off of the ground allowing the dmx leads more clearance.

 

However, the wood could look a bit tatty.

 

so...if the floor brackets have got 2 holes each, 4 holes in total, then maybe putting 4 long bolts through those holes and double-nutting the bolts so they act as 4 legs on each par can.

I did consider the wood fix - but as you said, a bit tatty which would make buying the floor mount version a little pointless. The bolt idea is great - but these only have a single fixing hole!

 

Think I'll be OK for tonight, but I am certain the key is the dmx plugs!

Have you thought about asking the supplier?

After all if they were sold as floor standing they should be able to be used that way.

How about fitting right-angeled XLRs to the leads?

Alternatively, if the lights are branded, try contacting the manufactuers, with a few links to plugs which are the same length or longer than yours - going along the lines that their so-called floor brackets are not suitable for lifting the effect clear of the floor by enough clearance to be operational. They might stump up the right-angled XLR adaptors or longer brackets.

 

 

 

Quick thought...for that all-so-quick workaround... homw much extra clearance do you need for the DMX plugs to fit, - if its only say 5mm, and the brackets are steel, how about clinking 4 round/rectangular magnets to the brackets acting as corner feet to give you the ground clearance. Most magnets are black, so shouldn't look too out of place.

I've done this several times with heavier effects so that they could have two clamps fitted. Made them much more stable and it's a quick and easy job.

I agree with the above - 90 degree XLR plugs are the way forward

Couldn't you drill a hole in the floor big enough for the end of the plug to go into so the light fits squarely on the floor

- think I'll go back and sit in the sun and have another glass of wine while I think about it smile icon

Just out of interest - the brackets aren't reversable or mounted off-centre on the lights, are they...?

 

 

 

eg: If you take the brackets off of the light and turn the brackets around, or over, or something...they stand off a little further. Back which I used to use what felt like a dozen 250w halogen type light effects, some had brackets which could be mounted one way for overhead hanging, but removed and reversed for mounted-below mounting.
