Where Do You Get That Music From

Recommended Posts

Hi guys /Gals

Where do you gain your promotional dance cds from. I myself like the old cheesy party stuff etc

but i'm having a fair amount of 18th/21st over the last few months. And there all ask for dance garage but the only music i have is the charts. and there coming up with names i do not know. I ask the obvious question where have you heard it. Either its of the music channels, radio station.

so if there is any club dj out there can you give me a clue where to go or a web site.

thank you

I got a lot of Garage cd's off Ebay because I wasn't too sure about it either. Just tap in Garage cd and quite a few come up which may help a bit. Check out the cd's that are getting bids on them because that will give you an idea of what's popular.

One I use a bit too for more old skool stuff is

PUREGARAGE "Rewind" Back to the Old Skool.

I am whatever you say I am

Right easy one mate !!!

The easiest way to find out what will be coming out is go to BBC, charts, TOTP website, goes to "singles" then "released soon" option on the right , you can do this with any genre ie, RnB, or Hip-Hop Rock etc. the available date is normally a few wekks before it hits the shops.

Then lookit up and buy on download remember to purchase the rights ;o)

Then youll have it way fore the punters.

ALso Mastermix CD's last few "end tracks" tend to be soon released and with the big bucks behind them they tend to do well

hope that helps

Many tracks that land on DJ's doormats weeks before they're released have to be paid for on subscription I'm afraid! White Disc, CD Pool, DMC etc are the main ones, some of them have a choice of genres of music you want delivered monthly. You have to sort out the dross (some stuff never charts) and some of the dance mixes are rather weird.

Just out of question, which do you find the best of the three?

I've bought some of the mastermix discs, and they're OK, but tbh they all have rubbish on them.

I was looking at DMC essential hits - which looks a bit better.. but again, how much is useful on them? (but people do request odd songs you might not think about playing which are on the CDs though).

I check the charts every week and more importantly the radio 1 playlist which contains the majority of new releases before they chart.

I also went on ebay and bought the best of:

Speed garage

Drum and bass

Hip Hop

etc etc

Ive tend to steer clear of anything 13-21 age group but on occassion have done them and never had a problem with playing current stuff. I always have a print out of the charts and the radio 1 playlist if I need inspiration. At least that way you know you will be playing stuff that they are currently hearing

If you aren't into a particular style of music it's hard to know what will and won't go down well.

For Garage music the best of the best usually ends up on The "Pure Garage" Albums although these are pre mixed albums but just check out the track listings and then off you go a hunting for a non mixed version. As said before if you are downloading make sure you purchase the rights.

Another CD in the same range is "Pure Bassline" again it's mixed but the tracklist should give you an idea of what you are looking for.

Tune into Radio 1 or kiss, or the Hits channel on Freeview a bit more often, these should keep you up to date with what in and whats not. Also keep and eye on Radio 1's website under "playlists" This should give you a list of the music that's currently getting airtime.

If you ever need the lowdown on what's popular just before a gig PM me.

Why don't we start making hellium filled bubble wrap?<P> It would help keep postage costs down.

I've been dj'ing for 25 years and do every type of function thrown at me, but I don't do 18th birthday parties unless it's a family type party (which most of them are). This means I turn down 1 function ayear on average, to avoid having to find club style music for the purpose of 1 function. I pass this work on to others who specalise in it. In turn they pass other work on to me suchas 90th birthday parties :bouncy:

The only way out of doing these are a one-off is to request a playlist well in advance.
