Does some of these people actually have setups?? shurely you calnt fit a full disco setup in to the likes of a diesel gusaling Rav 4 ie. CD players, mixer, Lights, stands, Speakers-tops bass or both??

Depends on what functions you do on a regular basis. If you work in a 17th century Inn function room with a 7 foot ceiling and 3 feet square to set up in, then you aren't going to need much more than a hatchback are you?. Compare that to the touring firms who do events like Live 8 and Wembley then your estate car isn't gonna get you very far either.

 

When I first started out in business, speakers like SAI and FAL were made of huge cabinets often with 18" cones and flared 2" horns and required two people to drag them from out of a Luton. Not to mention the crates of 12" and 7" vinyl that you had along with you too. Then there were 4 feet long twin deck consoles, and 3 feet x 3 feet lightboxes. Yep you sure needed a big van to lug that lot around in.

 

However, its 2008. The starcloth has much replaced the lightbox, and the LED cluster has replaced the pygmy bulb. Vinyl is replaced with compact disc or compacted even further by way of small pocket sized 200gb hard drives carrying your entire music collection. The massive passive speaker has been replaced with small 15" active cabs, offering better sound and efficiency. The twin deck has long since gone into the loft.

 

Yes, there are those who need to fill 30 foot stages and require 4kw or more of sound, but for most deejays, the equipment required to fill a 6 foot x 6 foot space in an hotel function room with 80 - 150 people can probably easily fit into the average sized hatchback with the seats down, at least with some careful choices of equipment.

 

Speakers-tops bass or both??

 

Why would you need a actively crossed over system and multiple amplifiers in a small function with 50 - 100 guests?? such as

A Pair of Mackie's or 600W 15" active speakers will easily cope with room to spare.

 

with the way the price of fuel is headed we're gonna need to fit it in a prius soon or a side car.

Yes I can see where your comeing from but personaly my regular Sat night gig when Im not at my Chalet has a small area to set-up in all I need is PA as in--

 

My Gator box which has CDP's, minidisk, mic reciver, Mixer, Decoder, All built in - Amp - Speakers - Stands - Cables and thats it!!

It takes in all 15 mins to set up from parking up to music on!!

 

I feel ive saved quite a bit of time by haveing a big car, because Im not exactly craming it all in, moveing seats ect.

 

As for the bass bins I do do big venues and out door events as well as small venues

I used to have a pug 206 2.0 HDI ... nice and very fast.

 

But I couldnt even fit all of my CD's in it let alone anything else.

For gigs on the island where its just a take me laptop job - i use me moped

 

For other gigs - i use the car

 

Mostly use the moped though - Last week it got a tarting up job and got labelled with hed kandi logos and so forth.

 

Next week its going to be the Lamber and butler mobile!

of course the changes in the new car tax bands between 2009 and 2010 may dictate to some extent what we'll all be driving, so it'll be interesting to run the thread again in 2 years time. If you drive a 4x4 then you are likely to be the worst hit, with increases from £225 a year to £455 a year, those who drive pre euro 3 and euro 4 emission vehicles and owners of those cars with large engines are also likely to be hit by huge increases.

Drivers of older cars (pre 2001) are not going to be affected by these changes, and their road tax will remain at £185 a year until 2010 when it will increase to £200 a year, so if you are considering on buying a 4x4 vehicle or have your heart set on a 3.2 litre V6, the message is clear, invest in a pre 2001 vehicle and you'll save big bucks on your car tax.

 

Its not all good news for older vehicles though, pre euro 3 emissions compliant goods vehicles are already being charged £200 per day to enter London, and so this already affects those who own transits and Leyland Daf goods vehicles operating in this area. Who knows when / if it will be extended to cover ordinary passenger vehicles too, and there is talk of exntending this to other cities such as Birmingham and Manchester.

 

These changes are already rumoured to be reducing the current residual value of 2nd hand vehicles, with many people reporting on having to drop prices by £2k or £3k on 4x4's in order to find a buyer.

I run a medium sized rig (never play to more than 150 people), and even just changed my speakers to a Peavey Pro Sub / Pro 15 set up, and it STILL all fits!

I have a Fiat Scudo van but I am considering swapping it because of the fuel at the moment.

 

Plus it would be nice to have more seats so I am considering buying either a Multipla or a the Fiat people carrier.

 

Just worried about the weight though??
