I generally intercept people before they get right behind the equipment, simply because it is a working area and space is at a premium.

Occasionally a child or teenager will wander right in behind, but they are tactfully propelled back the way they came.

Most people simply ask requests across the top of my 'bar', which works well.

All depends.

Most people tend to chat to me near my tripods which is kind of the front of my rig.

Don't mind clients (as long as they are sober) or Managers behind as they are in charge.

Also, if a client is paying me and I am starting the evening they are welcome to come behind (!)

I don't have a problem with allowing it at wedding receptions. I make sure there are no trailing cables (for my benefit too) and it's far better than talking to someone over the barrier that is a DJ rig. I know some DJs who work from the front for this very reason but I've tried that - didn't suit me.

Sometimes guests will just lean over the front to make a request but others are interested in how everything works, want a chat and occasionally want to have a go themselves (not always possible but in the right circumstances is OK).

If someone is intoxicated then I'll meet them at the side and keep them away from all the twiddly bits but apart from that it's Ok as far as I am concerned.

Same for me. Depending on the venue and the set-up at said venues, I will sometimes block off the sides of the show with a row of chairs etc, so that even I have to move a chair out to get in/out.

For example, one venue which I do a few times a year has got 4 double powerpoints along the only obvious wall for a disco/band to set up along - BUT they've put all 4 double sockets right next to each other, slap dang in the very middle of the wall - which means I'm almost standing on the main leads, whenever I'm standing by my console, and that's with me being fully aware that they're there - if a guest came behind the equipment to talk to me, they'd probably pull a wire out of a plug by standing on it, or they'd trip over the couple of inches of cable which isnt safely embedded in one of my rubber (Anti) trip strips.

Generally I'm fine with it as it means I can hear them better, and it saves them leaning over my gear (particularly kissers/huggers)

If I sense any risk of damage/spillage then I get rid of them immediately but it's usually fine.

Hmmm, this is very interesting.

My answer: NO, I just don't see that they have any business being there.

Remember Patrick Swayze . . . "MY space, YOUR space" that's it, short and simple.

I'll usually chat to them at the side of the rig, and that's where they always tend to go naturally, but no further.

I only want to speak to them, not kiss or hug with them.

If a nice lady wants to come behind and kiss or hug me Im not gonna stop them :joe:

Seriously though, I dint mind them comng behind the rig, as long as they aint near the equipment, I allways make sure all cables are taped down so theirs no trip hazzards.

I cant hear them very well when they are trying to shout a request from the other side of the rig, so I normally gesticulate for them to come round and talk to me.

As said above, I try to keep cables to one side of the rig and block that off as best as I can with table / something, the other side I don't like boxing in too much as I like to get out now and again. Obviously depends on where you've setup though...

Prefer to speak at the side of the rig rather than behind, although don't mind if its the organiser / staff ... If someone is interested in what you're doing, then I don't mind as long as I can get on with the job at hand!

A lot of my reglaurs would be very offended if they didn't get a kiss or a hug. It's good for business which is, of course, the only reason I play along. Glad I didn't mention the ones who sit on my knee :joe:

Hmm it's depends Who, when and how sober they are.

I usually set up and only allow access on one side of me so I can keep tabs on things easier.

Why don't we start making hellium filled bubble wrap?<P> It would help keep postage costs down.

I think it depends on who it is and why they need to be there....

Well lets say she is as fit as a butchers dog with baps the size of a small country, and she is standing behind asking for a request, rubbing her blessings on your left arm as you try and complete a mix.......then its most definately allowed :-p
