I welcome people coming round "my side"unless-

1.They are not carying drinks with them.

2. They are not falling down drunk.

3. There is enough room for the two of us.

4. They want a 10 minute conversation while you are trying to work.

5. They want to give me grief!

I always try to keep one side clear of wires and gear so that anyone can come round and have a chat/ask for a request if they want.

Same as me. If i think the person is "suitable" I allow them nearer, if not they get met & "body blocked" at the side far enough away from the mixer etc. Call it "non-verbal communication". At 6'2" and 17 stone it's fairly easy.

think i might be a bit too relaxed about this.....i let people come behind the rig for two reasons...i can ehar them better and it think it makes you more approachable instead of using the rig as a barrier.

NYE was a prime example.....at one point i looked round and i had two bouncers, the function manager and the bar manager standing with me...mmmmm...see.....approachable...lol

Good point Stevie.

For the last 2 weeks I have set up in my Saturday night residency with my gear to the sides and nothing in front of me. It may be coincidental but they have been the 2 most enjoyable nights in the venue for a long time. Space constraints won't always allow me to set up this way but I'll try and do it more often.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

How do you setup to keep things 'neat' so the punter doesn't see all the cables and other stuff that you'd normally hide behind cloth/etc ? Got some pics of the setup so to get an idea?

Cheers,

It's hard to explain. I'm on a raised area with a thick pillar in the middle of it, so the equipment is side on behind the pillar and I am to the side of it with no barrier between me and the crowd.

Ahh, what about speakers and lighting stands, cos these things get in the way. Guess lights could go at the back.

Pondering the idea of trying the equipment to all to one side'. So punters will kinda see what you're doing moreso. Although not sure if they'd like to see the waist down :p

Food for thought though..

The beauty of this residency is that I use the bar's own light and sound systems (in theory, most of it is currently on loan to them from me - long story). Anyhow, it's over to one side and out of the way. So it's very easy for me to set up to the side in this one venue, I haven't figured it out for other venues.

I don't yet have flight-cases, although looking at it I'd stick one half of the setup (amp/backup amp, DEQ, 1U DMX in one flight case to go on the floor, and the mixer+cd+radio mic + anything else (usb dmx controller) that would connect up there. only 4 wires needed between flight cases: mains, dmx, L + R. And would save my time in setting up wiring all that up every time... and would look better too imho...

Seriously thinking of flightcases now, 6u or 8u on the bottom, and a 10U+4U mixing console would probably work nicely...
