Yes as a box of frogs tongue out icon

But i see your point, i live in a very fast growing town with no nightclub as such only the bar/ funpub i work in

I see the max capacity of 200 reached at 10.30pm & a Q of 100+ waiting to get in or trying to climb over the beer garden fence

I know the amount of people who dont even try anymore because its too packed, or dont want to Q for a hour go off to the nearest City (14 miles away £40+ taxi there & back)

I know the disco bar takes between 10pm & 1am £4000-£5000 & the upstairs bar take £6000+ (4pm to 1am)

But from your list the violence/ knife crime is a bit of a worry

I dated a pub lady who ran a pub for while. It was a nice village pub, with a kitchen for food. - UK obviously, and pre-smoking ban.

Note: Prior to this I was thinking about running a pub - sick and tired of driving the country for my job.

I was realistic to know most of the work, but was still looking into it.

From what I remember, her day started either 6am (when deliveries were due), or 10ish.. if she didn't have much to do - just a shower and open up. The cleaner had their own key.

Daytime was hard work - not that busy, but you couldn't leave the bar, and regulars would always want a chat. She enjoyed the company, but couldn't nip out to get something from Tescos- or pick up a birthday card.

Close at 11:30ish, a final sweep of the bar and time to start checking the till, and then a bit of time to chill before bed.

She had a problem with Staff stealing, and had problems handling that aspect of the business. I can't remember if she ever resolved it.

Leaving the bar was a problem - knowing that you could lose money due to staff stealing meant that nipping out to the cash & carry was difficult, and so had to be fitted in before opening time.

I never discussed earnings with her, but got the impression they were low.

She told me "never to do it.." weekends would never be the same, and extremely difficult to go to parties/weddings with friends.

She sold up in the end...

My original local was recently knocked down, the landlord was a great guy - used to sort out problem pubs (those with drugs problems), but after 25yrs in the trade, his health had deteriorated to the point where his daughter was asking customers not to buy him a drink - on a busy day, various regulars would get a pint in for him, and over the years this had taken its toll.

From my traveling around (for a previous Job), and also nights out on the town, I can see two things;

-The only pubs that do well, are town center bars (with associated security and underage drinking problems) or pubs with good food.

-There is a high risk of having alcohol related problems. If you like to drink, its going to be difficult to stick to soft drinks when working.

-Pub managers (as opposed to tennants) are better off, financially and socially.

-Lots of pubs are closing for a reason, there is not the demand anymore. This could mean those that are left do well, but I think the breweries are only really investing in pubs that already have potential, the quiet local is disappearing.

I think Dan had a great post about why Pubs can't afford DJ's - its a good, but sad read.

Personally, with the whole country on a squeeze, I think it would be a mistake to get involved with this. Overseas may be better?

Hope this is helpful!

Jason

3 of which are also examples of which as service providers within the same industry, we could equally come up against

I dont think people have the disposeable income any more. As a punter, then DJ, then punter again, it doent take an expert to see the biggest business done the weekend following pay day, followed by the quietest following that! I dont think people can even afford to drown their sorrows any more.

I ran a bar in Spain a while back and believe me its not worth the hassle you get

Lots of red tape and endless late nights dealing with idiots.

You never get a chance to enjoy the place. Its really really hard work

We used to close at 5 in the morning and then you had people coming in at 8 in the morning for their fry ups.

Don't do it!!!!

Yeah - Its amazing -

I have a british pub and a beach bar - and love evry minute of it - Ive had pubs in the uk, but they can't compete with the tourist places.

Business is booming and ive turned round both places.

The beach bar serves food - of which i have a chef working.

The bar is brill - yeah you can finish late - yeah theres SOME red tape - but no where near as much as what i had in the uk with the pub there.

Other bonus is, people on holiday are in a different frame of mind - which means there up for a laugh, and enjoy themself.

I dont open the bar in the mornings - i open at 6pm and close whenever.

The beach bar is open from 9am till 11:30pm serving food till 7pm.

I took the chance and moved here to live, (in greece) and i wouldnt change anything really.

Your trusting her with Matt..oohhhhhh

Ill close my eyes. :dan+ju:

To be honest I wouldn't do it but the key to success is market research and local knowledge.

If you crack the the right place it can be a gold mine ,however if you don't its a millstone.

Yup, I noticed how blasé the Greeks were about it, as the restaurant bounced up and down a bit.

Only the Brit contingent were looking like a bunch of Meerkats saying "wtf is going on here?"

I would go for a long lay-down DJJEG.

The pub game is all but finished......

Thirty years ago I set up a Fruit importing business focusing on serving the wholesalers who served the small fruit shops that were prelavent then. The supermarkets at that time only had a tenuous hold on that part of the business.....however as soon as they got involved.....It went bust.

The same thing is happening now to Pubs.It is nice to think the situation will be reversed... but it won't.

The stage now belongs to the large chain pubs selling cheaply priced 2 for 1 plastic meals and ludicrously over priced drinks in their Wacky Warehouses.

Alaso dont forget the protection racket side of things with clubs, a friend of mine has clubs up and down the uk and even one in miami, & he has had serious problems with gangs trying to infiltrate his clubs.

not worth the hassle, trust me

About 8 years ago, we put in to buy the lease on Bolton's only proper live music venue. It was virtually 7 nights a week live...indie, rock, blues, acoustic, covers etc. Council who owned the lease turned us down and sold it off to a ladies only gym, deciding they didn't want a pub in that part of town (right next to Town Hall).

Was furious at the time, but looking back, thank heavens we were refused.

Given the smoking ban, lack of customers and the change in drinking ethic from 'having fun' to just 'getting rat legged'. Nowadays I would never ever even think of running a bar in the UK...and if I did, I wouldn't let anybody in! :joe:

Buy a pub and reopen it as an Indian Restaurant. Thats what's happened to two local pubs here.

We have two very close by that are now chinese buffet restaurants... Could offer Karaoke I guess lol
