davemoody 0 Posted August 5, 2008 Report Share Posted August 5, 2008 I have had enquiries lately asking if I have the new licence and as I haven't yet, the venue has said that I cannot play there. It is so annoying that again we are supposed to pay for something that is a con! My argument is this. If you have to pay £250 for 5000 tracks lets do a few maths just to consider: A CD album has on average 15 tracks on it so for 5000 tracks thats about 333 cds. Now considering the price of these cd's at full price are between £9.99 and £14.99 on average lets pick the average of £12.49 £12.49 times 333 = £4,159.17. Now you try and explain to me how the hell we have to pay this pathetic amount of £250 just for a bit of paper? I have paid plenty of money for my music in the first place so why the hell should I pay even more. The more DJ's accept this ludicrous licence, how many more are going to come in to force. STOP SUPPORTING THIS RIP OFF LICENCE NOW!!! So of you are happy to get ripped off even more on top of: having to pay extra insurance for your van or car for business use....... having to have everything PAT tested having to pay out for PLI insurance having to pay for new tracks to keep up with the latest music....... AND THEN HAVE TO PAY AGAIN FOR MUSIC THAT WE HAVE ALREADY PAID MORE THAN WE SHOULD HAVE TO ANYWAY!!!!!! DISGUSTING! Link to post Share on other sites
deejaymitch 0 Posted August 5, 2008 Report Share Posted August 5, 2008 I'm happy to pay for PLI and PAT testing as it makes sense to me and gives both me and my customers peace of mind. But I do not see any justification in having to pay for a license to play music that I all have already legally purchased. So what if I've changed the format? I'm not going to play the CD and the MP3 at the same time. I am gaining no financial advantage from ripping it! The Pro Dub license is a disgrace. I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more. Link to post Share on other sites

If everyone just accepted it then we would all be paying the goverment more money these days. This to me applies to the pro dub license. If we all stick together and refuse then they will have to scrap it, but unfortuantely most DJ's are far to quick to had over money for a scrap of paper. It seems as though there are some DJ's who have taken it upon themselves to send out mailshots to venues stating that DJ's need the licence but seem to omit to say that if a DJ uses CD's and legal downloads, they don't need it. Would be interesting to know if they have heard this from the MCPS-PRS or as a result of a mailshot from a DJ who is trying to increase their market share. Link to post Share on other sites

I perform using those ripped tracks - it's my choice however...convenience of not opening the CD flightcases to get to the originals at a gig unless I have to - eg: If someone tips a beer over my 3 hard drives. It sounds like a lot of other people rip copyright music too, and use that new copy in their business. The back of pretty much each and every CD states that it is not permitted for me to do that action - eg: Rip copyright music from the CD. The Pro-Dub license stops me, and others from getting into trouble by dis-obeying the copyright conditions on the back of the cd case/inlay, which we're agreeing to when/by buying the cd. I choose (my choice) to rip copyright music from the original formats I bought them in, I dont want to get into trouble with organisations, and dont want to be excluded from either venues which I've played at before, or might be booked to play at in the future, so I bought the Pro-Dub. If professional music users choose to only use originals, they dont need the Pro Dub license. I would air my concerns that going around, be it on a forum, or from a park bench or half-way up a lamppost yelling "Dont buy it" could be construed as Inciting others to flout copyright laws - which might in itself be wrong. The forum will not condone illegal activities and until there is a legally backed statement to say otherwise, the Pro Dub licence is a legal requirement. Members are free to express their opinions towards the licence but must not expressly state or imply that anyone should not buy it if they require it. Agreed, if that's what the leading post was suggesting, rather than "use ripped tracks, but dont buy the pro-dub". It's down to interpretation of the leading post, which could be taken in more than one way. Much in the same way that I suspect the people who said they wouldnt pay their poll tax didn't actually take the required steps to no longer need to pay their poll tax, they carried on as before, still needed to pay, but didn't. Those wishing to read all the comments that have already been to'ed and fro'ed about licensing, will find plenty of posts via the DJU Search facilities. The forum will not condone illegal activities Good to hear! the Pro Dub licence is a legal requirement. Acknowledged. (for those not using 100% originals).
