Older Tracks Popular With A Younger Audience

Recommended Posts

When I started back as a DJ after a huge gap, my biggest fear was not being in touch with current music trends, and because of this I avoided situations when I would have to face a young crowd. I've since found out I need not have worried, and I was truely stunned by just how much 'cheese' was requested by the younger crowd. When I first DJ'd back in the 60's, to my own age group, I activly sought out new music before it was generally known, and bought most of my stuff from specialist dealers who imported much of what they sold from America. Back then I would never have dreamed of playing 20's & 30's 78's, I'd have been bottled off stage :scared: but now, I can play a set containing much of what I first played 40 years ago, to todays young crowd and it goes down fantastic!! I find this very strange, but I'm not complaining

99.9% of my work is weddings and the majority of clients are in the mid to late 20's to mid 30's age bracket.

I find it intriguing that I'm playing tracks today that I bought as a teenager going down really well with this younger audience - "Do You Love Me", by the Contours being a good example.

I know that it featured in the film "Dirty Dancing" and that "Respect" by The Queen of Soul was in "Bridget Jones' Diary".

Another track that goes down well is "I Want You Back" by The Jackson Five.

I'm assuming that was in a film I'm not aware of.

Can anyone explain the current popularity of it?

I think they are just feel good tracks, probably sober many youngins wouldn't admit to liking? but once a few drinks are down them things are different as they've probably herd the tracks before so know them and some obviously have been remixed or simply been covered by somebody ells.

From the DJ perspective its great as you never get board of playing them
