Nonsensical Requests

Recommended Posts

Had a great one last week.

"Hey mate, will you errr play that Eminem track. Y'know the one like errrrr, Eminem Bell Bottom Jeans"

"I'm fairly sure Eminem has never made a track called Bell Bottom Jeans, you sure it's by him"

"Yeah, it might be called errrr, Eminem errrrr Boots With The Fur"

"Oh, you mean Flo Rida - Low"

"Blank expression ................."

I put it on next track and he went straight over to his table and sat back down.

I've noticed a spate of totally agressive requests recently. People when they want a request grab my face to pull me towards them so they can screach into my ear, they want their song "NEXT" and rather than "Hello please can you play xx" - I get "OI, WHEN ARE YOU GONNA PLAY xx?"

Some lovely people about!

Spot on Jon, especially the "next" thing. I remember when people asked politely for a song then went away and came and thanked you when you had played it. But now there are no polite requests, just rude demands. When you agree "Next" is snarled back at you, and when you say no they demand to know why. I have tried to explain clamly that (i) the song is inappropriate at that moment and/or (ii) other people have made requests before them which will be played before theirs. I have, on occasion, received a torrent of abuse in response to this. On other occasions I have been slightly more direct in my response.

But one of my all-time favourites is when they say you have to play it next because they are about to leave. The answer to that is "Cheerio". The DJ in the the venue they are going to can play their rubbish request.

Agree with Mitch on this one, if anyone demands a song next I always make sure I play it (if appropriate) an hour later.

Get the old "i'm leaving in 5 mins" request quite often so just normally say "bye".

I think people are definately getting ruder, had a middle aged bloke recently ask me for request and he had a mouthful of peanuts at the time of asking and was spitting them all over the place. I politely pointed out that he should come back and ask me again when he had remembered his manners.

Bottom line is we are someone trying to do a job and i wont tolerate anyone being rude or abusive

People are ruder and wont wait.

as a karaoke guy i get this all the time the "next" song and " im going in five mins etc " I say sorry there is a queue and i will play there request when its there turn , if they say im going and they want to sing or a music track .

i say my job is to reward people who stay in the pub not people who are going ..if you stay i'll play your song but not if your going... and i will remember if i play it then you go next time. but i do this in a cheeky smile sort of way that i an get away with.

I have been asked for

jitterbug (wake me up before you go go)

apple bottom jeans (Low)

summer lovin (summer nights )

Harlem black girl (holla back girl)

here we are now Entertain us (smells like teen spirit)

You're obviously doing the wrong calibre of gigs.

I tend to get young women asking for request and when I say I've got it and will play it, they tend to run off to their mates doing an impression of an headless demented chicken LOL

I've been doing this for years now and I can never remember it as being as bad as it has been in the last 6 to 12 months. Nearly every request I'm getting someone shout "NEXT" after I agree to play it followed by a rather agressive stare! I've spoken to other Djs and they have said exactly the same thing. Is there something in the water?

I hate being rude to people as I tend to be quite a pleasant chap (ha) but one day I will just turn round and say "NO" when someone says "NEXT" as its happening around 20 times a night in a club. At the moment I'm reserved to saying "I'll see what I can do" to keep the peace.

The one thing that is really annoying me is people grabbing my face, my shirt, whatever they can so they can spit into my ear a bit closer. Someone is going to get carted out!

I think I'm becoming a grumpy old man! Old age!

I agree, people are getting worse....and at a younger age!!

I do not do pub gigs and find that women are the worst offenders.

The average guy is not as big as me and whilst I consider myself approachable and generally passive I will not tolerate fools lightly. Most guys I can reason with....women are a totally seperate thing. I dislike dealing with drunken women (and if they have smokers breath this makes it worse!!) and generally just say things like "I will have a look as soon as I get a search screen free" which they usually accept. I have no search screen, but it works well...try it!!

Trouble is...and this is contraversial....many DJs do us all no favours by accepting the fact that the public can talk to us however they feel.

As a pro, I think you should and must, stand your ground. If the idiot asks you to play a song that will clearly not work with the direction you are going, say "Not yet, ... no, ... later, ... in a while, ... sure,... later...." the list goes on...AND DONT BUCKLE!! You are in charge. Its your job to do whatever suits the job and if you think it wont work..dont try and force it!!

usually i say "i can play it a little bit later for you, when im playing that sort of music" then if they push it, ill say "ill see what i can do"

if they ask me again 5 minutes later, explain that you are not a goldfish and can remember the song they asked for 5 minutes ago

Very well put.

In my main residency most of the regulars are well trained now. If they push me as to when I'm playing it they either get "later" or "soon" always accompanied by a glare which they now know means to clear off and not push their luck. Some are still learning though.

And they've also learned that, if I have agreed to play their request, the more they come up and ask for it again, the longer they will wait for it, or they may not get it at all.

It really is a pathetic state of affairs.

I have to say, this is similar to the fact that so many places (shops, banks, offices, even the pay booth at toll bridges!) now display signs warning that "verbal or physical abuse will not be tolerated / police will be called" or words to that effect.

Basically, people ARE definitely getting ruder, AND more aggressive. And it's not just teenagers, it's people of all ages, right across the board. What has suddenly (during the last few years) caused people to behave this way?

I've been a DJ for 20 years, and it's not even that people's manners have declined gradually, what I've noticed is this general lack of manners and respect seemed to start about two or three years ago.

It would be too easy to give in and just play what they want next, but if it clearly doesn't fit with the current set, then why the hell should I? Damned if I'll do it just to avoid confrontation - they shouldn't be so confrontational in the first place! People used to understand your reasons when you explained why it can't be the very next track, but now you just get a mouthful of abuse.

My worst experience of this was while doing a karaoke night recently, when a guy asked me verbally for his song, and I politely asked him to fill out a request slip so I wouldn't forget him, as there were several people ahead of him. I'd barely finished the sentence, when he screamed at me :cense: then, :cense:

Admittedly that is worse than rude, that is positively psychotic. An extreme example maybe, but considering how rapidly people's manners have declined, how long will it be before that kind of abuse would be considered usual?

What the hell is it all about?

if someone comes up to me demanding that i play something that they requested quite rudely a while ago i smile sweetly and say i'll play it when its requested politely(in soft feminine tones and very sweetly) This works on both males and females and gives the message of what you will accept and what you won't...in very polite but firm tones. This probably works for me being female....not sure if what i do and say would work equally as well for a big butch guy.
