70's Glam Rock Night

I'm doing a 70's Glam Rock night this weekend, and one of the first things I asked when I accepted the gig is ....... you guessed it..... Gary Glitter Yes or No. The client said yes and personally I have no problems playing his music as he was an integral part of the scene and made some cracking party tracks. Although I definitely will not be playing "Do You Wanna Touch Me There".

 

Normally I steer away from playing any Gary Glitter nowadays, even if its requested, because there’s always someone who will come up and tell me to get that :poo: off now!!. Mind you, I used to get the same with Michael Jackson a couple of years ago.

 

Abhorrent as his personal life is and in no way do I condone it, where do you stop, maybe I shouldn’t play R.Kelly, Chuck Berry, Bay City Rollers, Michael Jackson, Jonathan King, Jerry Lee Lewis, PM Dawn, The Who,.... etc. etc,

 

I'm just wondering other people’s views/experiences on censoring artists are?

I would say take your cue from the radio, They still play all the other artisits but non of GG or JK so dont play them....

Easy one this....His music didnt do any damage to anyone,You would invite cds into your home but not the man himself.

 

Its down to people been narrow minded and trying to prove a point.

It's still very high profile case and still current. I wouldn't play it and I told a potential client exactly this. The gig didn't come off although the guy was in agreement with my decision.

 

I don't play much Michael Jackson either for the same reasons.

 

Some people can be very narrow minded and you never know how they are going to react.

 

If someone was genuinely offended by somthing I played unknowingly then I would just choose another record and move on.

If I was requested to play it I would, if i wasn't, I wouldn't, it's as simple as that. I'm a DJ, not the morality police. Personally I wouldn't buy anything these cretins may release in the future, but I wouldn't throw away the stuff I already have.

With the current situation as it stands, i would avoid playing anything by GG. - Saves any hassle.

err no MJ because of child misuse,same with any record touched by johnathan king, nothing by james brown the wife beater or jerry lee lewis for marrying his under age cousin. No Led Zep for female abuse (and fish abuse ! ) no beatles, stones etc etc because of drug offences. The list would be endless if you really took this to town. So for me as long as the customer does not give me a dont play list then i will play anything !

Same here, i did a 70's night for women's aid and i did tell them before hand that i would not play any GG. And they totally agreed, one woman also said to me that you never know who is at a function that you might do they may have been abused or know a child that has been.

Agreed - it wasn't the music that committed the crime.

If the client says it's OK to play it, then do so. If you feel uneasy about it, as you obviously do, maybe introduce it as a request... tongue out icon

Fair enough , but drug use is illegal, children are used in the production all over the world and a lot of music has been written while using it but we still play it. I can assure you the families of every drug addict are not pleased for the freedom of choice and artists that make it look cool are nothing better than pushers. Sexual abuse of children can never be codoned in any way but its not the music that has done it. Do you think MJ is guilty because the evidence is there ? over the last 5 years this thread has been up god knows how many times and we have had good members leave the forum because of this. Do people sleep better at night because they didnt play a GG track, does it really make a difference to child abuse ? A lot of people have fond memories of the music of these artistes, Are we as djs the moral guardians of the public ?Do you boicott Nike,Adidas ,diadora equipment because children are forced in to slave labour to produce it. Another example closer to us southerners is should football club Plymouth Argyle be boicotted because they waited so long in firing their goalkeeper who killed 2 boys in a drink driving incident ? So many questions and different answers from every individal. I respect your morals but i dont see myself as a judge of anyone else.

i dont play any now, but i only ever used to play "leader of the gang" anyway

 

with the Rock n Rock Christmas, i dont think people realise that its GG singing it!

 

oh and whilst im at it

 

We get this reaction for GG songs, rightly so because hes an evil man and shows no remorse and even mocks people

 

However R Kelly has had how many chart hits SINCE the whole under-age sex thing started? Also people still cueing up to Colaborate with him??

Playing or not playing a Gary Glitter song will not change the world for better or worse. There a huge number of entertainers who have done illegal/immoral/disagraceful things, many of which we will never know about. It is the place of the legal system to catch and punish these people, it is not our place to judge them. If, as a matter of personal conscience, you prefer not to buy a CD or listen to any tracks by people whose personal lifestyles you find offensive, you are perfectly entitled to do so. If , in the course of your work, someone wants to hear one of these songs and you have it - I don't see that you should refuse. And, let's be honest, even if he isn't requested by name, if I take a booking for a 70s glam rock night, I expect to play Gary Glitter at some stage.

Agreed - totally.

Gary Glitter & The Glitter Band were one of the very few true glam rock bands. Remove him/them and you'll leave a fairly big dent.
