You can get a nice laptop for £400.

Make sure whatever software you use is compatible with Windows Vista though, as some still isn't.

yep, i have a very nice HP one now, im no good with laptops, they get used SO much!

ive had this since may, the chargers buggered! the screen light goes of if you knock it, its been soaked twice and the audio out and mic port are both buggered!! so i had 2 weeks of to sort an old 1000mhz PC out with XP on to use my virtual DJ as my version dont work on vista! so im quite happy! as im doing a MUCH more proffesional job, ive been complimented lots since i returned, so im sticking with my PC then using my laptop to sort requests out, then transfer the requests via a USB stick, also i can use it to make my keyrings and run karaoke off!! as my karaoke software runs on vista, and it saves clogging my pc up which is slow!!

The reason I picked the dabs one is its made by acer and it has a ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics chipset which is far better for handling dual screen applications...

The new intel integrated GMA 950 scored better than ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics chipset in 3D tests it shares system memory as most low end graphics does so make sure that you have a fair bit of system RAM.

I set up a laptop for karaoke use for a friend of mine he got a 3 GB (vista 32 bit can not see 4 GB ) of Ram Fujitsu Siemens with intels integrated GMA950 chip set he got this from Tesco for £350 because if it goes wrong tesco dont mess about and he could just swap it.

I turned off aero turned off the sidebar turned off visual effects set the wmp speed and turned off video acceleration set the resolution of the displays to 16 bit (karaoke files never need to be higher than this) basically i turned off everything that vista runs to make it look pretty but isnt needed when using it as a DJ/KJ tool..It has worked perfectly for two months now without a single crash.

The only thing I'd settle for is a macbook, but then again I hate windows because the mac OS is 100x better and its much better for stability when playing at gigs, mine has never ever crashed and runs M-Audio Torq with no problems what-so-ever, ran it on my windows desktop and got all sorts of problems! But then again, most people on here use Virtual DJ (which is crap anyway).

Get yourself a second hand macbook and M-Audio Torq, you won't look back!

If like me you're still comfortable with Windows XP, you might also consider this Fujitsu-Siemens laptop:

... which has both Windows XP Pro and Vista, so you're getting the best of both worlds smile icon

I wouldn't get too hung up on 3D test scores and the like if your main considerations are Karaoke & DJing, which are 2D applications. If you start loading on other things like 3D games and other non-critical things, you might be making trouble for yourself if the computer starts playing up, because you're not 100% sure if any of the other software you added caused the problem. Load what you need then keep it clean - if you want to do other tasks, get a second machine.

We have a Fulitsu Siemens Esprimo - cost just under £300, but added an extra Gb of RAM to get it running right - has 2Gb now. Very pleased with it - running Mixmiester at gigs with no issues

And the morals of the story? Don't drop expensive sensitive machinery from any height, and always try to run the laptop from the mains when doing gigs tongue out icon
